The explosive reward of ammunition and health that comes from kills in DOOM (2016) encourages players to continuously string along attacks, always staying in the fray or at least close to it. The environment and the play doesn’t reward defensive actions, and instead provides enemies with plenty of opportunities to punish the player if they take their eyes off of them for too long. This mixture of reward and punishment quickly puts the player into the mindset that will present the game at its most engaging.
