Close encounters!

My beautiful koi betta Bisby has had a jumping spider neighbor taking advantage of her tank light to hunt bugs under for some time, and recently they met face to face! Very happy to capture each of them acknowledging the other - and Bisby's quick look back at me as if to say "you're seeing this too right?!" 🧡

Snake-mimic sphinx moth caterpillar, Hemeroplanes triptolemus, Sphingidae

When disturbed, this sphinx moth caterpillar expands and exposes the underside of the first body segments, mimicking a snake head with black eyes and even light reflections. Sometimes it also strikes like a snake to deter predators like lizards or birds. Found in Mexico, Central America, and South America.

whens female beetle appreciation day. we need more love for our ladies with no horns and tiny mandibles who do such hard work laying eggs in rotten wood. who will love her even if she doesn’t have weaponized ornaments
