#random ri thoughts #and like not the cool wine aunt who takes the nephews to amusement parks and stuff #the one who's a rich widow and may or may not have killed her husband #he's just got the vibe of the aunt showing up at family gathering #who sits in a corner with a bottle of wine and sunglasses and makes some pointed remarks at the men in the family who do nothing while the #women work #and who gives to the nephews relationship advice ranging from “break up with them” to “I have a friend with a pig farm” #and when I say nephews I also include nieces I'm not rewriting these tags #i promise im drawing stuff #ça arrive très très fort

currently refreshing my alien designs (especially the Armisians, and also finally making a design for the KseIn) and I really want to draw meden and etha now. Turns out the only thing they needed to get some character and backstory development was a better design ajdjejgjf

[First impressions] Wenn's arrival on the Imperator and first meeting with the Emperor

This is my longest comic to date, and the most challenging one to make ! I had a lot of fun, and I learned a lot (I already see things I could have done better haha), I can't wait to draw more comics ! Now for some rambles in no particular order :

The Imperator is the home of thousands of people, who can be divided in two very different populations : the bounty hunters and the permanent crew. The bounty hunters are rattached to syndicates, and guaranteed food, shelter, protection and weapons from the Imperator, as well as exclusive contracts, in exchange for a percentage of the rewards they collect. The permanent crew is composed of cooks, engineers, pilots, gardeners, dock workers, janitors…. everyone needed to keep the Imperator flying. The percentage taken from the bounty hunters' rewards is used to pay the crewmembers. There have been tensions between the hunters and the permanent crew, but the Emperor enforces a very strict non aggression rule, and has made it very clear that, if the bounty hunters need the Imperator to live, the Imperator does not need them to fly.

The recruitment process is very similar for both the hunters and the crew. When the Imperator needs more hands, a call to candidates will be sent to the next spatioports on the ship's planned trajectory. The bounty hunter syndicates will make a first selection before presenting their candidates to the Emperor. The people who want to join the crew will be brought directly in front of the Emperor. Spontaneous applications are never considered (except for Wenn, apparently).

I wanted to play a bit with the space between the panels whe it comes to the singularity. In universe, singularities are impossibilities, they should not exist the way they do. They litteraly break reality and I wanted to represent that with the singularity litteraly acting on the space between, the invisible time between an action and the next. I think I can go way further with this idea and I really want to explore the possibilities. I could also do more with the Emperor : as they are an extension of sort of the Imperator's singularity, I want to play with their capacity to break the space of the drawing and "leak" into the white page.

[StarDancer Radio Isotope]

Originally part of a fleet of rescue ships, the Radio Isotope fell in disrepair when the fleet was decommissioned. She found her way to Jill's father, who started heavily modifying her to turn her into a home for his family. Unfortunately, after an attack on the shipyard the Radio Isotope was being repaired in, Jill had to flee with the ship and this strange captain she had just met.

Equipped with six elegant yet powerful engines, the Radio Isotope is fast for a StarDancer-class ship. Her wormhole generator only needs a short two weeks rest period between jumps, and her speed, her lack of visible weaponry and her reinforced hull make her a good smuggling ship, capable of swiftly slipping away from pursuers or losing them in rough environments.

On her sides are two SkyHowlers, used as orbit-to-ground vehicles and emergency shuttles, bought by the Captain to replace the damaged original shuttles. Despite her clean and sturdy appearance, the Radio Isotope's repairs were never really finished, and Jill has to work on upgrading her internal systems whenever she can afford to. Still, the Radio Isotope is the pride of her crew and the only place where they really feel at home.

#but I wonder about the color change- at least for me it made sense that he stuck out a little from the rest #because of his more independent nature ( via @measlyfurball13 ) You are absolutely correct and I wanted to thank you for your tags because I've been thinking about colors all day and now you've given me an excuse to talk about it here haha

I wanted to do some tweaking to most of the cast design for a while now and I finally got around to do it. It's mostly some color correction, no major changes except for (obviously) the Lieutenant, and Jill and Nua ( i kinda want to make the captain more cat like but i love how he looks now so it's an ongoing battle with myself)

(i'm putting my thoughts about the color changes under the cut)

as i said, it's mostly small color adjustments : the Imperator's crew's greens were all over the place (Raki's was very desaturated, the Emperor's was colder, etc) so i color picked the Imperator's green from the model i made to use as a base for their green. Etha, Meden and Jill's gold accent are now based on the Captain's gold, to link them together, and I shifted Nua's green towards blue to make her fit more with the RI crew, get her away from the Imperator's colors.

The Lieutenant's palette is more saturated to go with his... colorful... personality, and I changed the silver accents to a cold beige to separate him further from the Imperator. The Captain does not really fit with his crew : where they are a tight knit unity, he tends to keep his distances and his life experiences are very different from theirs. the only person who can relate to some of his experiences is Jill, hence the touch of red in her design.

here they are with the old palettes for comparison ! I'm probably going to keep tweaking their designs, but I like these as a baseline.

The Lieutenant can have a little redesign, as a treat.

I loved the Big Legs™ of the old design, but I wanted something closer to an actual racing jumpsuit. I changed his color palette to a more unified, warmer one, that fits better with the rest of the cast.
