Laerryn

She built a device to transport her whole city into another dimension specifically to spite the gods. When the machine killed her best friend, instead of thinking "Wow, this might be a bad idea" she threw herself into solving it, sacrificing her marriage. When she discovered the system that was preventing her from getting the magic she needed to move the city, she destroyed it, unleashing the evil betrayer gods and dooming the entire world; The Ur-example of Wizard Hubris™.

Laerryn lived in a flying magocratic city and was the person in charge of the magical engines that kept it flying. In secret, she constructed her own engine, the Astral Leywright, that would allow the city to travel between planes of existence, believing that, as this would be among the greatest magical accomplishments of the age, she would be forgiven by the city's authorities for tampering with the engines once her deeds had come to light. Her commitment to this project cost her her marriage and her best friend, who was stranded in the Astral Plane after he agreed to be the first person to test it, but she continued undaunted. Eventually, when the Leywright was ready to be activated (under even better conditions than she had anticipated), she discovered that another of the city's apparati, the Tree of Names, a magic tree that had been placed there by the druids who lived on the land the city had came from, was siphoning the power she needed. Shortly afterward, it became evident that there was a conspiracy in the city to release a group of imprisoned evil gods, and that the city landing (something she needed for the Leywright to activate) was a vital part of their plan. Not only did she disregard this threat, but she also ended up destroying the Tree of Names (for a variety of reasons, but partially because it was an obstacle), thus unknowingly removing the last barrier that was keeping the evil gods from entering the world. Shortly after that she did turn around and use the Leywright to help mitigate some of the damage that would be done by those gods (dying in the process, but not before she'd reconciled with her ex-husband); Laerryn is wizard hubris incarnate, pursuing knowledge and magical advancement at the cost of all else and confident enough in her power to see herself as equivalent to a god.
