Pairing - Spencer Reid x fem!reader
Summary - In which Spencer Reid’s fake girlfriend becomes his real girlfriend.
Category - Fluff? Fake dating
CW - food, alcohol, suggestive comments, a kiss
WC - 2.7k
A/N - I love the fake dating trope but I’m bad at writing series so here’s a one shot.
You didn’t expect anyone to be at your door this late at night, particularly not the attractive FBI agent neighbor of yours who always avoided you, but here you were. Opening your door to reveal Dr Reid in front of you, wringing his hands, you were automatically intrigued by what brought him there.
“Dr Reid,” you said, a smile growing on your face. “What’s up?”
“Um, I-” he started, biting his lip as he thought about his words. “Um, nevermind, it’s stupid, I’ll just-”
“If it’s something that brings you to my place at,” you said, pausing to check your watch, “11:30 at night, I’m sure it’s not stupid.”
“Oh my God, is it really that late? I shouldn’t have come over, I’m sorry to bother you, I’ll just-”
“Hey, it’s fine.” You saw him begin to relax a little, some tension dropping from his shoulders. “I have something in the oven, if you want to come inside?”
He followed you into your apartment, making it a point to stand in one place and not look around too much. You got him a glass of water, pressing it into his hands and pointing him to your living room.
“You can profile the place, I don’t mind,” you said, and he flushed, looking at the ground. “Seriously, it’s fine. I’ll be right out.”
Dr Reid gave you a tight lipped smile before settling down on your couch, glancing around to look at your decorations, paying special attention to your bookshelf. You let him look around while you pulled the cookies you’d baked on a whim out of the oven, placing a few on a plate, and bringing them out to the living room.
“They’re hot,” you said, sitting down next to him, a foot or so away.
He looked between you and the cookies for a few moments before taking one, holding it with care as if it could fall apart at any moment. He took a cautious bite, raising his eyebrows in approval and finishing the rest of the cookie in only a few bites.
“So what can I do for you, Doc?”
“Uh, so I- This is really stupid, but I may have told my friends I was dating someone?” His voice rose in uncertainty at the end of his sentence, and you looked at him until he kept talking. “Right, um and Penelope asked me if it was… um.”
When he didn’t continue talking, you figured you’d have to prompt him. “If it was…?”
“If it was my cute neighbor?” he finished, his voice hushed. He visibly winced as you furrowed your eyebrows.
“Have I met Penelope?” you asked, trying to think of how she would know about you. You didn’t think you’d met any of his friends before, but maybe she’d seen you without you knowing.
“Uh, no?” he said, rubbing the back of his neck. “I may have… mentioned you at one point?” You raised your eyebrows, a smile growing on your face as his face and neck turned red. “Um, anyway, I said yes.”
“I see.”
“You see? That’s it?”
“I mean, yeah. Was that… all?”
“Uh, not so much,” he mumbled. “She wants to meet you?”
You tried as hard as you could to not show how amusing this entire thing was to you, but you were sure you were failing, especially considering he was a profiler and all. Lucky for you, he was avoiding eye contact, looking down at his lap, so he couldn’t see you biting back a laugh.
“So let me just get this straight,” you said, and he nodded for you to continue. “I’ve lived next to you for over a year, in which time you’ve avoided conversation with me. Unknown to me, your friends know me as your cute neighbor, and now they think we’re dating. And just to finish it all off, rather than correct them, you want me to… what? Pretend to be your girlfriend and meet your friends?”
“I’m sorry,” he stammered. “I should just tell them, I shouldn’t have- You- Sorry.”
“No, I’m down.”
Reid stopped in the middle of standing up to look at you with a bewildered expression. “You- You want to pretend to be my girlfriend?”
“Yeah why not?”
He gaped at you, his eyes comically wide as his brain short circuited. “So… what do you want in return?”
You thought for a moment, eyebrows furrowed as you contemplated the possibilities. “Uh, I dunno, can I think on that?” He looked dubious, to say the least, but agreed nonetheless. “Alright Dr Reid, when am I meeting your team?”
“You can, uh… you can call me Spencer. And I think tomorrow night if we don’t get a case?” Spencer shifted in his seat like he was worried you would change your mind.
“Cool, text me the time and place?”
“Uh, yeah okay, sure!” he said, handing his phone out to you. You put your number in without him having to prompt you. “I should probably go to sleep?”
You walked him to your door, smiling at him as he paused before leaving. “Good night, Spencer,” you whispered, opening the door to let him out of your apartment.
“Good night, Y/N.”

...
Spencer stood outside your door, waiting for you to open it. He shifted his weight, feeling stupid for being so nervous about a fake date. When you walked out of your apartment, all of the breath left his lungs. You were wearing a form fitting dress but that wasn’t what drew his attention. It was the lavender bra strap that peaked out from your dress on your shoulder. He couldn’t help but wonder if you’d chosen the color because of his texts, but he shook the thought out of his head as soon as he registered it.
“Hi,” he managed, punching himself internally for being silent for so long.
“Hello to you too,” you responded. “Tell me about your friends.”
Spencer talked as he led you to his car. “Uh, they’re my teammates at the BAU. Hotch is my boss, he almost never smiles, and he will most definitely be wearing a suit. Rossi’s Rossi. You probably know him. He’s an author. He makes a killer pasta, as Penelope says.” You nodded in recognition of the name and he opened the passenger door for you before walking around to the driver’s seat. “Penelope Garcia is our technical analyst, she wears funky outfits, and she’ll probably try to hug you.”
“Funky?” you asked, amused by his uncharacteristic choice in adjectives.
“Yeah. Morgan might flirt with you, and he will definitely flirt with Garcia. Emily will like you as long as you laugh at her backhanded comments and sarcasm. And JJ will like you no matter what.”
“Which friend called you out for texting?” you asked.
Spencer pressed his lips together, drumming a pattern on the steering wheel. “That was Morgan.”
“And Penelope’s the one who said you were dating me?”
Spencer nodded, pulling into a parking spot outside of the bar. “You can order whatever, I’ll drive back home,” he said as you walked inside.
You would have responded, but you were engulfed in a hug almost as soon as you entered the bar. You presumed the person hugging you was Garcia, and you smiled as she shrieked in your ear.
“I thought he was lying! It’s so nice to meet you, I’m Penelope!” she said, pulling away and grinning at you.
“I love your dress,” you complimented. It wasn’t a lie, she was wearing a dress with a floral pattern, adorned with a cardigan that was black on one side and white on the other.
“And I love you,” she responded. “Are you keeping her?” she asked, her eyes on Reid’s.
“Um,” he said in response, blinking at her.
“Okay Mama, ease off them a little. At least let them sit down,” a man said. Morgan, you assumed based on the flirtatious vibes coupled with the fact that he wasn’t wearing a suit and was not Rossi.
You ordered a ginger ale at the bar and Spencer did the same, leading you to a table with the rest of the team, where you took a seat next to him. You managed to identify Hotch and Rossi, and JJ introduced herself to you, as did Emily. You gave everyone a small wave paired with a smile.
“Spencer’s been talking about you for months,” Garcia gushed, and Spencer gave her a wide eyed look, shaking his head. “When did he finally get the nerve to ask you out?”
“Months, huh?” you asked, smirking at him. “Uh, we’ve been together for about a month now. It was really funny actually, he just showed up at my door one night at 11:30 at night after avoiding me for the entire time I’ve lived there. And now here we are.”
It was a dangerous decision, lying to profilers, but technically only the length of time you’d been dating was a lie. And everyone seemed to buy it, so it appeared that you’d done a good enough job. That or their profiling skills were muddled by the alcohol they were drinking.
“Okay, I need to know,” Emily started, a glint in her eyes betraying where she was going with this. “Is it… you know… big?”
“Emily!” Spencer spluttered while you laughed. “Don’t answer that,” he said to you as if you had any knowledge on the subject.
“Do you get scared when he goes on cases?” JJ asked, getting straight into the deep stuff.
“Uh, yeah, I’d hate for him to get hurt,” you said. It wasn’t a lie.
“Figures, especially considering everything that has happened to him during cases,” she responded, and you nodded, giving Reid the side eye. He winced at the comment and made no move to explain his injuries.
“Oh, like when he got shot in the leg?” Morgan said.
“Or the kidnapping!” Emily added.
Garcia raised her hand, slamming her drink down as she spoke. “Oo, what about when he got anthrax poisoning?”
“Alright, let her breathe,” Hotch interjected, effectively stopping any further listings. “It’s nice to finally meet you.”
“You’ll have to come over for a pasta night some time,” Rossi said, taking a sip from his whiskey.
You nodded excitedly, forgetting that you weren’t actually dating Spencer for a moment. You were saved from embarrassing yourself more when Garcia pulled Morgan off to the dancefloor, being joined by JJ and Emily. Rossi seemed to have had enough and he left, giving you another reminder that you had to try his pasta. Hotch stayed for a few more moments before also leaving, saying he had to get home to his son. And then you were sitting alone with Spencer at the booth.
“So why didn’t you ever talk to me?” you asked, turning to look him in the eyes.
“Uh, I was worried you would reject me,” Spencer mumbled.
You smiled at him, laughing a little bit. “Why do you think I agreed to be your fake girlfriend?”
“You- Do you like me?”
“I mean, I don’t know you, but I’d like to. And from what I’ve learned today, you’re very sweet and smart and cute and fun to be around. So yeah.”
“Would you… maybe want to actually date me?” You chuckled at his cautious tone and he shrunk back into himself. “Sorry, nevermind, that was stupid.”
“No, I would love to go on a date with you.” He smiled at you and opened his mouth to say something before closing it again. “I should have mentioned earlier that I couldn’t stay long though. I have to go home, I have work early in the morning, so…” you said, and his eyes widened.
“Right, yeah okay. Um, let me just say goodbye to my friends and then we can leave.” Spencer stood up in a hurry, mumbling something to Morgan and Garcia, who looked at you with a smirk, before he returned to your side.
As he drove you back home he stayed silent, but he seemed comfortable in the silence, the smile not leaving his face. It only left momentarily when you reached the door to your apartment, where he stopped to let you unlock your door. He rocked back and forth on his feet as he watched you, giving you a small wave.
“Can I kiss you?” you asked as he started to walk away.
“Please?” he responded, and you pulled him back to you, his hands going to your cheeks as he pressed his lips to yours. “I’m glad you agreed to be my fake girlfriend,” he mumbled.
“I’m glad I agreed to be your real girlfriend,” you said, opening the door to your apartment. “Text me when you’re free for a date. Or for Rossi’s pasta night,” you added, waving to him as you stepped into your apartment.
Spencer agreed with a smile and his eyes didn’t leave yours until the door was in between the two of you. It was safe to say that was not how you imagined your first interaction with Dr Reid to go, but you weren’t disappointed in the slightest.
