Out of curiosity and also guilt over my own coffee intake. I wanna ask:
Now I'm not talking about when you're studying and so you drink 3x the usual amount or something like that. This isn't me asking what your record is. I'm talking about the most basic, average day, how many coffees you drink?

various medieval English rulers in a grocery store
I have ingested nyquil so I am doing this
Alfred the Great: buys just enough canned food and duct tape to the point where you’re not overly concerned but you are pretty sure he’s a doomsday prepper
Aethelflaed: fills three carts with snack cakes, those church basement paper cups, and generic brand soda because no one can negotiate a surrender on an empty stomach
Athelstan: that is far too much coffee
Aethelred the Unready: just buying every single item on his wife’s list. This is the fourth store he’s been to because Emma is very specific.
Cnut: only came here for all his Special Haircare Products
William the Conqueror: fills up a cart and just leaves without paying. just fucking books it to the parking lot I hate him
Matilda: comes in with three rowdy boys, tells them to not ask for ANYTHING, buys an armload of 5-hour energies, leaves with two rowdy boys
Henry II: walks around the store eating a bag of grapes he has not bought while Eleanor does the actual shopping
Richard I: will find a way to talk about his study abroad last year with the deli guy if it kills him. Is also texting his mom to ask what groceries he needs to buy because he has no idea
John: verbally berating everyone in customer service because they won’t let him return a dented can of peas that expired 7 years ago
Edward I: tries to use a 24 year old coupon to buy lentils in bulk (he doesn’t even like lentils?) and knocks over an elaborate pepsi display in a fit of rage
Edward II: has his card declined and demands to know why the cashier had to be so loud about it
Edward III: says “guess it’s FREE THEN HAHAHA!!!” when an item doesn’t scan right away. several items do not scan. Gets a veteran’s discount.
Richard II: that’s uhhh… a lot of advil there buddy
Henry V: also has his card declined but drops the “DO YOU KNOW WHO MY FATHER IS” line, is dressed like lucky luciano
Henry VI: begins to panic when Margaret leaves him in line for two minutes because she forgot eggs. the line is moving quickly…so quickly
Edward IV: he has one cart filled with wine. Elizabeth Woodville has another filled with kid cuisines.
Henry VII: pulls out the fattest binder you have ever seen and it’s filled with coupons. His transactions usually take 2 hours and he tsks the entire time.
Henry VIII: buys bags of charcoal and dog food just so he can pick them all up and be like “yeah this isn’t even heavy to me I don’t even feel it” also buys condoms and laughs nervously
Edward VI: literally just buying root vegetables even though he’s 9 because he is so weird
Mary I: just coming in for her weekly supply of “praying for you” cards, always gives exact change thank you mary
Elizabeth I (if these even count as medieval anymore): no longer allowed to do her own shopping after the sweet n low incident. Now a personal shopper gets her groceries for her. it is robert dudley

Starting to feel like the most unbearably insufferable thing about John Constantine is he's a good detective. He's a wizard who smokes in other people's houses, he's the most annoying man you've ever been attracted to, and he's unfortunately genuinely competent
he's got a lot of columbo trickster energy
but columbo has enough befuddled grandpa energy to temper it and gaslight you into thinking he's maybe being annoying by accident
constantine is being annoying on purpose and everyone knows it

According to a recent report published by the Aargauer Zeitung (h/t Golem.de), around three million smart toothbrushes have been infected by hackers and enslaved into botnets.
The most cyberpunk thing on your dash today.

A historically and culturally significant lake in California's San Joaquin Valley that first disappeared in 1898 has returned after last year's atmospheric rivers flooded the region.
Tulare Lake, known as Pa'ashi — or "big water" — to the local Tachi Yokut Tribe, was "once the largest body of freshwater west of the Mississippi River," per Earth.com.
Vivian Underhill, who published a paper on Tulare Lake as a postdoctoral research fellow at Northeastern University, noted it was mostly sustained by snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada mountains and was 100 miles long and 30 miles wide at its peak.
The lake served as a key resource for Indigenous Peoples and wildlife and was once robust enough to allow steamships to transport agricultural goods throughout the state.
However, government officials persecuted and displaced the indigenous communities in the late 1800s to convert the area for farming through draining and irrigation.
"They really wanted to get [land] into private hands so that indigenous land claims — that were ongoing at that time — would be rendered moot by the time they went through the courts," Underhill told the Northeastern Global News. "It was a deeply settler colonial project."
While Pa'ashi periodically reappeared during the 1930s, '60s, and '80s, the barrage of atmospheric rivers California experienced in 2023 revived the lake despite the region receiving just 4 inches of rain annually. According to Underhill, Tulare Lake is now the same size as Lake Tahoe, which is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide.
Its resurgence has led to the return of humid breezes at least 10 degrees cooler than average and native species, including fish, amphibians, and birds. Lake Tulare was once a stopping point for migratory birds traveling a route known as the Pacific Flyway.
"Something that continues to amaze me is — [the birds] know how to find the lake again," Underhill told the Northeastern Global News. "It's like they're always looking for it."
The Tachi Yokuts have also returned to Pa'ashi's shores, once again practicing their ceremonies and planting tule reeds and native sage.

this is purely for fun and I've certainly been guilty of a few of these things myself in my years of fic writing. don't be weird in the notes and don't use this as an excuse to insult someone's writing.

The Great Outdoors! I can imagine Chang and Tintin going on camping or hiking trips for dates. While they love exploring museums and flea markets, in the woods they can avoid public scrutiny.
I've just been in the mood for drawing in ink and also doing long walks outside. These are inked traditionally and coloured digitally.

All repairs have been made. All ends have been trimmed. The shawl has been dragged through a ring.
This is a mostly accurate reproduction of an 1880s-1910s Shetland lace ring shawl.
I used Jamieson and Smith Shetland Supreme 1ply in natural white. This yarn was developed with Shetland Museum and Archives as part of the Shetland Fine Lace Project, and is a 100% Shetland wool reproduction of the original handspuns used.
For additional historical accuracy, I also had borderline severe anemia for this entire project without knowing what was wrong with me.
Dimensions are 5 foot 8 inches square.

Bonus slow-mo gif of it in motion. You can kind of get a feel for how it tries to velcro to itself at the very end (the edging points are flipped up and stuck) which is the main reason I didn't try other methods of capturing the drape capabilities. You'll have to take my word for it that it's super drapey.
Tumblr media
Ring shawls got their name from the fact that one of the ways to prove the authenticity and quality was to pull it through a wedding ring--provided, of course, that the diameter of the ring was half an inch or less.
I do not have wedding rings.
I have goth rings.
I dragged it through a size 5 (approx 1/2 inch diameter) coffin ring. I do not recommend this.
There is some BBC archive footage on YouTube of a reporter interviewing two lace knitters who demonstrate this at the end of the video. The reporter stated the shawl being used for this demonstration is 27 square feet.
Mine is a little over 32 square feet.
This was made particularly challenging by the fact I could NOT block it at max tension--the cotton thread that strings it up to the blocking frame sawed through part of the edging, and I had to stop at the dimensions I had. As a result, the density of this fabric is thicker than it would have been otherwise.
But I did it and I retain the bragging rights forever.
Tumblr media
@battleblaze I'm going to beat you to the punch this time and tag @knottybliss myself. Thank you for the object lesson in "don't post pics when still in the pits of stress over blocking going horrifically wrong" lmao
Tumblr media
@the-fibre-stuff Thanks! I made the frame, too! I think the skew in that very hasty photo is largely the angle--there's just not enough space without moving very heavy furniture to get a good head-on angle. But my crochet cotton DID saw through an edging point while I was trying to make sure that it was all perfectly even (and it's hard to get my frame to stay square) so I think there is a skew, but hey, if I'm the only one that knows, I'm chill. Glad to hear that it passes the galloping horse test, in any case.
Tumblr media
@ghostrepeater I'll never tell. You can't make me.
Tumblr media
@invisiblefoxfire I still think you said it best: This thing is determined to simply not exist at all, but my will is superior.
And finally (maybe) @lacewise as predicted, now that the finishing details have been completed, better pictures taken, I AM proud. Exhausted. But proud. It remains to be seen how often I allow this thing to leave the house.
Everyone else that complemented my very hasty, zero contrast, probably super eye-strainy "please send help and/or booze" quick pic--thank you. I legit never post anything, I truly am a habitual lurker. I've only ever gotten that many notes on boop day. I'd tag some more mutuals, but honestly, you're seeing it in more than one place.

Alone At Christmas? (MDZS)
Well. This is certainly a thing I just did.
Tumblr media
Alone At Christmas? by @captain-apostrophe is a modern AU where A-Qing hires Xue Yang to freak out her family, but then it turns out her dads are super hot...
Fast forward a few months and I got the brilliant(?) idea to do a decorative stab binding, which is (originally) a traditional Asian bookbinding technique. There are many beautiful variations on it, so I figured, as I do, why not make it dicks? Why not make it three dicks? And what better story to do it with?
Tumblr media
(yes, technically there are six dicks, but there are two stories so it's really three dicks per fic)
In combination with this ridiculous design, I decided to embrace both the Christmas theme and Xue Yang's trashiness and use Duo Pepperoni for the bookcloth, and some very, very interesting marbled endpapers we've nicknamed salami sandwich.
Tumblr media
The typeset was lovingly made for me by @three--rings in the 2023 typesetting exchange. She preserved the ridiculousness as well as all of the author's hilarious Santa photos (which, WOW, that is a whole thing!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm very happy to have this in my possession! Thank you @three--rings for the typeset, and thank you @captain-apostrophe for making me laugh for a good couple weeks after reading this. :D

not proshipper not anti but a secret third thing (person who has a career in the media and, through covering legislative politics, has watched "associating with problematic fiction or entertainment is an indicator of moral degeneracy" rapidly become a mainstream GOP position that they are encoding in legislation to target the queer community under the guise of protecting children, thus coming to the conclusion that positioning the "can people enjoy things that would be immoral IRL in their fiction" debate as a proship v anti fandom debate is akin to pretending that "should we have the death penalty" is a discussion that only matters in Death Note discourse — the extent and manner to which fiction affects reality is an issue that is immediately relevant to today's US politics, and to summarize my opinions on the matter in fandom terms would be to diminish the ways this debate is affecting america Right The Fuck Now. and i have stopped taking "this person is bad for shipping the wrong anime thing and being horny about it" in any sort of good faith ever since I saw it literally used as part of a GOP smear campaign against a transgender state legislator in an attempt to defend the right from backlash after they used their supermajority in the Montana house to prevent her from speaking on the floor. Anyway I think everyone on this site, especially Americans, could benefit from ceasing to think in proship v anti vocabulary and instead developing coherent political positions on the nature of fiction that do not directly align with current fascist political tactics)
