It’s a biiiiig running joke in Arch & Anthropology that if we can’t explain something, it’s given the tag “ritual”

More so 40-50 years ago than now. I think we’re more comfortable saying we don’t know.

But I think where you can get tripped up is thinking that “ritual” has to have anything to do with religion or spirituality.

You keep a shiny rock because it reminded you of a nice day on the beach? That’s your ritual. You’ve assigned a further meaning to it that it didn’t originally have. And no one can really know that meaning, especially 500 years in the future with very little context clues (unless you write it down) So we just say “hey, they kept this shiny rock, it doesn’t seem to have a practical function, so it must have meant something more to this person than just it’s usefulness”
