Knight/bard AU is out!
It's a biting spring day when Sir Neil de Pyrige, knight-errant first and lordling second, first crosses paths with Todd of Andreu - master poet, new court bard, and the exiled citizen of an enemy country. The rest has passed into myth.
Hymnal To The Year-Turn is on AO3 right now! I've been working on this thing since February, so if you want 37,000 words of pseudo-medieval Anderperry, bardic poetry, and falling in love through letters, go on and check it out. Plus a notes section/bibliography of sorts at the end for you to have a look at! Here's a generated Penguin Classics cover:
Tumblr media
(See, I told you I've been thinking about this AU for a while.)
Tagging: @grubbzy @beovisionavant32. So sorry this took so long to finish! You guys must have asked about it nearly two months ago now.

As a person who's legally supposed to wear glasses but hates wearing them, I think Neil Perry is the same way. It's everything in his power not to swat at them when he has to read something.

dead poets society theater au headcanons
so for context, i'm a stagehand, i've worked for events as well as in community theater, so this is mostly based off of that. doing my part to add dps to the dps tag, and this was what i could come up with
ok they're all involved in a small community theater production of the tempest over the summer
neil is an actor, he's playing ariel, this is one of the first roles he's landed. he'd done theater in school as puck, which didn't go so well, but it's been a while since then. he's graduated college recently after studying medicine and is finally somehow at a point where his father has less control over him. despite this, he's somewhat unsure what he wants to do now, if he wants to continue with medicine cause it's what he knows, or try to make it in theater.
todd is the assistant stage manager, he was really unsure about taking the job, but the stage manager, cameron, who he was pretty good friends with, and who he'd worked on a crew with before, specifically wanted him. despite this, he's worried that he's too anxious and not assertive enough to do it
cameron is the stage manager, and a bit of a hardass, which means the crew loves him and a decent chunk of the actors hate him. he's good at his job, he's very organized and really good at getting shit done and people together, but he'll also chew you out if you fuck up
meeks and pitts are lights and sound respectively, they've worked on a ton of shows together before and are pretty close. every show they work together, they bring a bag of snacks with them for the crew to eat during performances
charlie is the prop master, and a stagehand. he has a knack for finding weirdly useful shit in random places, and is brilliant at constructing props. despite this cameron is constantly having to bug him to get his stuff finished on time. he and cameron have a sort of love/hate relationship, they clash really bad at times but they both understand that the show would not be as good if either of them weren't there
keating is the director! he works really well with newer actors, i'd imagine he's pretty similar to peter weir in a lot of ways. he can take a little too long to reach deadlines, as getting the show perfect is a lot more important to him, which annoys cameron a bit
knox is also an actor, he's playing ferdinand and is convinced that he and chris, who plays miranda, are destined to be together or something. chris doesn't see him like that though
chris is miranda, she was originally interested in the tech/design aspect of theater, but a while back they needed more actors, and she ended up volunteering. she started as crew when ginny first started acting, because ginny was nervous to do it alone
ginny is iris, she has more free time this show since her role is smaller, but is always at rehearsal whenever chris is there, so she ends up sitting around and watching a lot. she quickly becomes friends with neil, who is similarly always around todd
anytime he's not busy, neil is hanging around todd. he's started doing parts of todds job for him, getting batteries, taping doors, sweeping the stage, doing other miscellaneous errands. he spends so much time with todd that he somehow ends up as crew in the program in addition to ariel. he starts getting to the theater early when the crew shows up just to spend more time with todd. cameron has started treating him as an extra stagehand

neil autism. neil being super upset when mr perry changes what extracurriculars he's taking without his permission. neil stimming when he's writing the fake permission letter. neil wanting to be an actor because its far easier to play out a pre-written interaction than to have an actual interaction. neil "autistic extrovert" perry.

There's a bunch of adhd advice out there that's like "people with adhd tend to work better under deadlines due to the anxiety so here are ways to artificially induce a stress response in order to get you to get work done" and it's like well what if I don't want to be stressed out all the time in order to function

:0 penny for your thoughts on Neil, Charlie + Knox and their parental relationships?
ok so i have had a post floating around in m drafts about this that i just didn't finish so here it is but finished:
charlie and knox in the drop the annual scene in particular i find interesting. watching charlie specifically you can tell a lot about both his relationship with neil and his relationship with his parents. when neil and mr. perry leave the room and he just kinda looks at the door with this sort of angry, almost vindictive look and it was like. he knows!! he understands exactly what neil's father is like!! and then there's the "so i don't like it any more than you do" line after that which makes it clear that charlies parents are about as controlling an neil's father. we put so much emphasis on todd's relationship with neil but i think neil and charlie's relationship is also really fucking interesting. overall the way charlie deals with how controlling his parents are is very different to neil (intentionally acting out vs. trying incredibly hard to fulfill their expectations) but their parents are actually probably extremely similar in a lot of ways.
i've always gotten the impression that knox had a good relationship with his parents, particularly when compared to neil charlie and todd, but i didn't really have any concrete reasoning other than just inferences. after rewatching the movie the last few times i think its just how he seems so content to mostly do the things his parents want him to do. he goes to the danburry's kind of rolling his eyes about it but other than that seems fully content just to go. he's the one who tells neil to tell his dad off. neil points out that knox and charlie don't go against their parents; charlie's says that he doesn't like being controlled by them either, and knox says nothing. plus from one cutscene you find out he's in the "sons of alumni" club. which doesn't necessarily mean anything but could?? i guess. he says that his parents will kill him for trying to go after chris but still does it without really thinking about the consequences, which contrasts with neil doing everything he can to prevent his father from finding out about the play and charlie submitting the article in a way that is hinted he did to get into trouble on purpose.
idk i just think the contrast between knox vs. neil vs. charlie's relationships with their parents is interesting. like all three having specific expectations put on them but while charlie and neil very much don't want to fulfill those expectations, knox doesn't seem to mind being exactly the person his parents want him to be. additionally i do think knox's parents may be a lot less strict which probably also adds to that difference. meanwhile charlie and neil definitely seem to feel the stress that's being put on them by their parents, but act in opposite ways because of it. neil tries extremely hard to follow what his parents want him to do whereas charlie is shown repeatedly and intentionally acting out because of it. instead of hiding everything he does that his parents wont approve of like neil, he makes what he's doing extremely obvious. the most obvious time was submitting the article to the school paper, to which nolan literally tells him that he isn't the first student to try to get expelled. and while i'm not sure how hard charlie Was trying to get expelled (i don't think that was the only motivation although it was probably part of it, the movie makes a point to tell us that and probably wouldnt've if it werent true. and in the end he does get expelled. neil on the other hand tries so hard to not directly go against his parents that he decides that killing himself is the best option. his justification of "i can't tell my dad i'm in the play because if he doesn't know, i won't be directly disobeying him" is very telling. and finally while knox does say that his parents will kill him if he tries to get with chris, he makes very little effort either trying to hide it from his parents, or trying to make it obvious in the way charlie did. he seems to actually be most concerned about chet danburry's reaction, and that is the only person he does anything different because of. while his parents may be mad at him for getting with chris, he likely isn't nearly as concerned about their reaction, given that other than mentioning they'd be mad, he does nothing about it

i tried to reblog this in the tags bc you both brought up good points but tumblr shuffled all my tags around and i wanted to say more so here???????????? it is i guess
desire mona tags:
#OUGH!!! was hoping youd add onto this u spearheaded the neils mom thoughts in my mind#depression is actually very commom with 50s housewives or housewives in general just due to to nature of their work paired with a lack of ac#knowledgement#so that makes sense#and it being treatment resistant would explain why it persists even after she doesnt need to perform any motherly duties while neils at scho#ol#aaaaaand passing that onto neil#but considering the way mental health was treated back then im sure it wouldnt be used as a BECOME A DOCTOR thing but it could#i was thinking more physical health like cancer or smthn similar#oncology? james?#oncology james
i'd kind of been interpreting it as depression cause then neil inheriting that would possibly be a thing. (hysteria was only discredited fully as a diagnosis in the 80's if i'm correct also, and i don't think depression on it's own was considered to be hysteria but still, i doubt mrs. perry being depressed would be taken seriously) but depression + something else Also makes a lot of sense. could go either way with this!!!
good merits accumulated tags:
#but i think there was a short discussion a while ago about how neil's dad is a little anxious financially?#and as they don't seem to be anything less than well off. it might be posited that the anxiety is class-focused#they're upper class but are they upper class enough for welton THE rich boy school. etc#in that frame neil becoming a doctor becomes another way for the family to gain some status#while also being kind of the 'best' job he's ever going to be able to do#like realistically he's never going to be able to break into those upper business echelons the way that many welton alumni#will be able to do#(because nepotism etc. etc.)#so medicine is his best shot#dead poets society#it's half 7 so if this doesn't make sense. blame it on the clock
ok so this is like. something i'm extremely interested in for some reason sorry if this is a lot.
side tangent first: i think neil being pressured to be a lawyer instead could hypothetically sort of make sense?? bc while it's probably easier with nepotism, it likely wouldn't be impossible. doctor does make a bit more sense though, although i think there's probably several other reasons Why doctor other than financial reasons and how possible it would be for neil.
neil definitely isn't welton level upper class. there's a few things, "we aren't a rich family like charlies," but also the deleted extracurriculars scene. knox gets asked about a new house his family is moving into, cameron (and charlie in the script) gets asked how his father is. knox is in the "sons of alumni" club, charlie, cameron and todd are all in the service club, neil is in neither. the service club is nothing definitive, however because welton is Welton i kind of suspect that most of the service that is done depends on the student's families being able to give money to the school. i've always sort of theorized that neil was on a partial scholarship. it would make sense for him specifically given that he is one of welton's top students, this line from the script has been stuck in my brain since i read it, "NEIL PERRY stands. Whereas some boys have two or three achievement pins an the lapels of their coats, Neil has a huge cluster of them on the pocket of his jacket." plus him being set to go to harvard, (at the point when the movie is set i don't think he could know for sure but given everything about him his chances are probably pretty good) even though the majority of welton students go to the ivy leagues, this is still pretty important to welton. welton depends on its students being successful out of school, thats how they continue to get students. so giving neil a partial scholarship, who is near guaranteed to be extremely successful as an adult (at least they assume so) would be a smart decision on their behalf cause after he graduates they can then use neil to convince more people to enroll their students.
Anderperry fans hyper-analyse ever micropixel in dead poets society by watching it 12 times a day then try to find a reason why there is no happiness in their lives.
