Cycnoches lehmannii
With its intriguing flowers, Cycnoches lehmannii becomes my absolute favourite in the growroom. And not because the interesting shape of its flowers, but because of its fragrance. It’s difficult to put into words, but it reminds me of red liquorice. Forget every other flowery fragrance. The genus Cycnoches doesn’t smell like flowers. It’s strong, fills the room, it’s artificial and synthetic. It defies anything one would spect from a plant.

Cycnoches Mass Confusion
Hybrid between C. Clorochilon and C. warscewiczii, this hybrid is vigorous, strong and has huge, clove scented flowers. On top of that, it’s also very easy to care for, as long as you respect its seasonal dormancy period and provide lots of light, lots of water and lots of fertiliser during its active growing season.
Defilitely a must have if you like the genus.

Tolumnia “Jairak Rainbow” looking especially nice after a bit of rain earlier this week. I checked its root system this morning and found a bunch of new roots and a new growth emerging from the base of the largest fan. It’s a bit early, but I’m not too surprised given the unseasonably high temperatures.
I was convinced that these flowers were going to remain blood red and mint, but a few days later, they’ve taken on a really gorgeous raspberry tone with rust red speckles. Tolumnias can display some variability in flower color and patterning on the same plant, so it’ll be cool to see how consistent the two spikes are. That second spike is coming in fast so I should know in a few weeks.

I’m trying to repot my orchids before March-April rolls around and they start growing out of control. This Neofinetia (Vanda) had a great year for vegetative growth and root development. Should get another few growths (and flowers, possibly) this spring.
Hard to see in these pics but it’s sharing space with the tiniest dendrobium keiki, which is just too much of a shrimp to even fit in a thumb pot lol

I bought this plant a year ago, a hybrid of two very different slipper orchids. Flowers of this hybrid vary a lot and aren’t always even nice to look at. It’s preparing to bloom now and the suspense is building!
