definitely not the first person to say this but i am obsessed with taylor offering up an extremely long album that takes a minute to digest in the era of short content and instant gratification

there are so many things we still need to talk about in ttpd but one thing no one is paying attention to is this line: "my beloved ghost and me, sitting in a tree, d-y-i-n-g"

this line simultaneously brings together all of the essential themes of this album: dying and being haunted by love, fables and stories, specifically those for children, as this line is a reference to a well-known nursery rhyme, reinforcing the idea that she can't grow up, and probably most importantly, the rhyme that she references itself:

two people (ie. x and x) sitting in a tree k-i-s-s-i-n-g! first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in a baby carriage... all of which she sings about throughout this album but never actually gets. all she has is her beloved ghost (and she doesn't even have that since a ghost isn't something you can physically have)

and to put this lyric in the song "how did it end?" is such a gut punch because here in one sentence are all of the reasons why it ended

i'm not going to say that you have to be a die hard original swiftie to understand and appreciate tortured poets because i think thats stupid but i do think part of the reason why its struck with ~older~ swifties so much is because its such a return to form but in a new and original way..... i've seen so many people say taylor admits to things on this album that they wouldn't admit to with a gun to their heads and its like well yeah thats kinda the point! thats the crazy bitch we fell in love with! that's the girl who made us feel like she had read our diaries and put our innermost thoughts into songs! thats the girl who went on ellen and fucking blasted joe jonas to the world! we love her!
