a more kid-friendly and non-suggestive alternative for littlex in the case that an alter/system isnt comfortable with the term 'little' for system children.

the swan represents a gentle reminder to the alters experiences while also not revealing too much information, alluding to life-altering bonds formed in youth. swans are generally seen as elegant and youthful, symbolizing innocence and childhood.

this is not meant to romantizice or glamourize the alters trauma, but to make it feel as if it's not something gross or wrong with them.

A Guide to Persecutors

What is a Persecutor?

A persecutor is a system member that purposely harms the body, other system members, the system as a whole, or tries to assist abuser(s) and their effects.

Persecutors may be introjects of an abuser and have not realized they can separate themselves from their source. A persecutor may also have a lot of self hatred and no available outlet, thus they take out their internalized abuse on the system. Another situation you may see is that a persecutor may be harming the body or system because they believe they are protecting it (from more severe abuse or an otherwise perceived threat).

What do I do?

Some medias that portray plurality also portray locking up system members. Regardless of if you’ve consumed these medias, you may also feel the need to lock up your persecutors. Yet, locking up a persecutor can be counterproductive and harmful not only to the system but to the persecutor as well.

All systems work differently and handle situations in different ways. However, it is important to remember the persecutor is a system member a part of your system. For your system’s safety, they may not be able to have free range, but they shouldn’t be treated as lesser than the rest of your system. How would you feel if you were locked up in the depths of your mind, or never allowed to socialize?

Here’s alternatives to immediately locking them up:

- Redirect their harmful behaviors. What else can they do besides (X)? If they have a lot of (Y), how can it be handled? For example, if a persecutor has a lot of anger, can it be redirected to a punching bag, gym equipment, hitting a pillow, or tearing paper?

- Provide them a safe space. Give them a space in headspace or in the outer world (even if it’s with supervision) where they can simply be.

- Set strict boundaries. Just because they’re possibly hurting does not mean you have to hurt, either. Let them know what exact behaviors aren’t okay and why.

- If you can, get to the bottom of why they act the way they do. Remember they aren’t necessarily a puzzle to solve, but knowing why they do what they do can help them and the system heal.

Tips for Flashback Management

1. Say to yourself, “I am having a flashback.”

2. Remind yourself, “I feel afraid right now, but I am not in danger. I am safe now, here in the present.”

3. Remind yourself that you are allowed to have and enforce boundaries.

4. Be gentle with you or self, refrain from shaming yourself for experiencing a flashback. It is not your fault for experiencing one.

5. Allow yourself to grieve and feel. Journal on it or talk about it, if those tools are readily available to you.

6. Find a safe place you can unwind. Breathe deep and slowly while gently asking your body to relax, use something like a blanket to ground you and make you feel safe.

7. Be patient with yourself and reach out for support.
