Everlark (The Hunger Games, Ch.6)
(In which peeta makes moves)
katniss continuously refers to her and peeta as a team, a unit. it's always "maybe haymitch will really step up and help us" not just "help me" - maybe it's just natural as she's recounting things to both of them but it feels like she naturally seems them as a team herself, but then has to remind herself of the games and their reality.
her gratefulness that peeta covers for her regarding lavinia, the avox. him knowing to do that shows how well he can read her.
"when we get to my door, he leans against the frame, not blocking my entrance exactly, but insisting i pay attention to him" okayyyy peeta rizzlark
peeta noticing she's shivering and wrapping her in his jacket and doing up the top button. a gent. her accepting it because "a friend would do that, right?" lol
peeta trying to suss out what katniss's relationship to gale is not very subtly because he has a crush on her and is hoping gale isn't her boyfriend and katniss not picking up on it at all because she's too busy being accusatory
"you don't forget the face of the person who was your last hope" - said about lavinia and katniss but i can't help but also connect it back to katniss and peeta as peeta was katniss's last hope when he gave her that bread and she definitely didn't forget his face. maybe a bit of guilt held in her that she didn't go out of her way to help lavinia, similarly to how peeta did for her (obviously the stakes in katniss and lavinia's situation were much more dangerous)

reread thg recently (if you couldn't tell) & i think it's very funny how there's this continued disagreement especially in the movie community over the whole gale vs. peeta thing + the fact that katniss can't decide if she loves peeta or not for so much of the series. movie marketing def played up the love triangle into a twilight-like deal, but her love for peeta is literally established in the first book. katniss has a lot of difficulty accepting grey area in her feelings for peeta, and setting aside the nuances of their relationship––and whether or not a hard line between platonic & romantic is even necessary in such a deep bond––for a moment, to me katniss' arena experience culminates both literally and narratively as she's in the hover craft flying away. after she wakes up she clings to the glass separating her and peeta, watching him be operated on: "I'm held here both by the hovercraft walls and the same force that holds the loved ones of the dying. How often I've seen them, ringed around our kitchen table and I thought, Why don't they leave? Why do they stay to watch?" this compound memory of injured ppl on her mothers table is somewhat of a touchstone for her throughout the book, and deserves deeper analysis, but for my purposes all you need to know is that every time its happened she runs away, and in this case the next line is: "And now I know. It's because you have no choice." she is his loved one, though it's very 'when push comes to shove.' in that moment there is no internal conflict over whether she loves peeta or not, only the action of loving him.

the lines "let me go!" and "i can't" are the most everlark lines ever and the fact that they're not in the movies is CRIMINAL. their entire dynamic from the beginning has been that; peeta being unable to get over katniss, katniss unable to get over her debt to peeta, them unwilling to let the other die in the arena, katniss, even though she tries, unable to truly keep herself from caring about him after the hijacking, because their lives are so intertwined and they're both such kind, loyal people who have selflessness at the core of their identity that it's impossible for them to give up the other.
peeta does not say "i won't" to katniss, he says "i can't", he is saying it goes against all that is fundamentally him to let her kill herself, and he is looking directly into her eyes, because this the first moment he acted like his real self, where he went on instinct to protect katniss. there's always been something instinctual to how everlark try to protect each other, with how katniss screams out peeta's name involuntarily when the rule change is announced in their first arena, and how she describes herself as unable to control herself when peeta's heart stops, how both times after they're taken out of the arena her first thought is making sure she can keep peeta safe. katniss says that if she let peeta die in their first arena, she would have spent the rest of her life trying to puzzle her way into getting him out alive and never forgiven herself. their first, most primal urges are to keep the other person safe. "let me go!" "i can't, if i did, i would not be me anymore"

do you guys ever think about how everyone knows it's buck and bucky, everyone knows they belong to each other, the best of friends.
and john knows he belongs to gale, and he knows that to an extent that he has gale, but he also knows that gale will never fully belong to him in the same sense.
for john, it's only gale. gale is all john sees when he looks to the future, tunnel vision for this golden beautiful boy, willing to give up every single piece of himself for him, like he's made for him– all gale would have to do is ask.
but he knows gale will never ask because he doesn't have a reason to. gale loves john but not in the same way john loves gale and john can make peace with that because he'd rather have a little bit of gale than nothing at all. the alcohol and warm bodies of strangers numb it all.
unfortunately, i think about it! too much probably!

it's hilarious how utterly unserious the clegan stalag 'fight' was. not one bit serious was the entire, like, 10 second ordeal.
the half-hearted, simultaneous leg grabbing. the scrambling. the scissoring. the "mommy and daddy haven't had enough Adult Privacy of recent days and daddy's going batshit insane" of it all. buck on his "let's not fight in front of the kids" shit.
it got fractionally more real with the punch buck ended up landing but bucky still walked away with a semi, only strengthened by the punch and the lingering psychosomatic imprint of buck's loosely curled fist, so the whole thing kind of like success. because at least buck finally fuckin' touched him. and was paying attention to him. at least that'd feel somewhat familiar or grounding in that hellhole.

gale saying "you know, i really did believe that if there was only two b-17s left, would be you and me flying 'em" to john in the train car is literally a love confession. he's made his decision to escape with john and thinks they're going to die together and is fine with it. there's nothing left for gale to do but admit that he does believe in them, believed the entire time, that he did bet on him and john. he's really saying, "sorry i didn't say it earlier, but thank you for saying it first and always saying it." and i don't think john ever thought he was going to hear that

modern clegan au where first week freshie college years gale goes to a party and gets black out drunk (first and last time ofc) and wakes up to the left pic in his camera roll except he knows absolutely nothing about this boy but he keeps it in his album because wow.......wow.......
flash forward to his last year, working part time in the coffee shop across his building and still having the pic in his phone in some half bitten hope that he'd run into the guy in the pic again because through two serious relationships and two amicable break ups, he's still stuck on this unknown guy's lips and smile. one random tuesday when he's yelled at two seniors messing around during his shift THIS (right pic) brick shithouse of a man walks in with his dog, complete with his mystery man's features—lips, long neck, cheekbones, red ears and everything—and he literally falls over trying to hide behind the counter because shut the fuck up who goes through a glow up like that—
