Buck is sitting alone at Bobby's bedside. Eddie was with him, but he left to get them coffee and food - he's got nothing but time now that Chris is in Texas for the summer. Buck is worried about him, but the person he'd usually talk to about it can't really talk back right now.

But, Buck realizes, Bobby can listen. He remembers bits and pieces of what was said to him in his coma, maybe Bobby will hear him and remember too.

So Buck starts talking. He tells Bobby how worried he is about Eddie because he's never known Eddie without Chris - will this be the thing that finally breaks his best friend? Will his son asking to go spend the summer in Texas be the thing that wrecks Eddie beyond repair?

He talks and he talks and every so often he pauses and imagines what Bobby would say to him.

"You're stepping in it with him Buck, you're the one who knows Eddie best, what does he need from you right now?"

And Buck knows that answer - Eddie just needs him. He needs to know that even though he fucked up, Buck isn't going anywhere.

When Eddie walks back in ten minutes later, Buck has shifted to telling Bobby about how he's still working on perfecting the new lasagna, but he'll make sure it's perfect by the time Bobby wakes up.

Eddie hands Buck a coffee and a breakfast sandwich - Buck hadn't realized it was morning again. Athena and May will be in soon to take over so Buck and Eddie can get some sleep.

"Mind if I crash on your couch?" Buck asks when they walk out of the hospital an hour later. "I don't really want to be alone right now."

"No Tommy?"

"He's on shift," Buck says and he's grateful that it's true because he'd be asking Eddie even if Tommy was free.

Because as much as he knows Eddie needs him right now, Buck needs him right back.

hello dan and phil :) i just thought i'd let you know that since you refuse to stop using the word "phan" constantly and clearly love it so much, we here on tumblr did you a solid and banded together to get #phan back on the top ships list! i know, i know, no need to thank us.

for many years we ruled this website and could always count on seeing #phan high up on the weekly top 20 ship lists, not to mention the coveted end of the year top 100. eventually, however, everyone got older and times changed and most people decided #phan was cringe, it was inappropriate, and for the past half decade or so you've lost the throne that was once so rightfully yours
