A photograph by Charles Roscoe Savage of Mormon polygamists in the Utah Penitentiary, ca. 1889. First popularised in the early 19th century, prison stripes gradually fell out of fashion across the 20th century. New York banned stripes in 1899, citing an improvement in prisoner morale after switching to grey work-wear.
