Truly bizarre how people say The Doctor's numbering is fucked when you can have whole scholarly debates about like almost every aspect of The Master's incarnations. And honestly The Master's are even more straightforward because there aren't really any "hidden" incarnations or anything, it all depends on what media you choose to follow.

Is Delgado the first or the twelfth or the thirteenth Master? We do have two actors playing the First Master so far but one is the kid era and the other won't be doing it anymore because the actor is a transphobe sooooo who knows.

Is he the decayed incarnation or not?

What counts as the Thirteenth Master? Riger Delgado? Peter Pratt AND/OR Geoffrey Beevers? Anthony Ainley and Eric Robert's? Lest we mention the times that The Master has reverted into the Decayed Form. Or the question mark that is Gordon Tipple.

At least the newer incarnations are simpler! We just don't know what the actual numbering is since we haven't had a regeneration between Macqueen and Jacobi yet or between Simm and Missy although it's implied. And we got an explanation of Missy regenerating which was COMPLETELY UNRELATED to The Madter returning to the show and somehow they fit perfectly together.

This show is insane and I love it.

why is there such a big thing in dw fandom that people think the companion needs to be relatable to the audience. do u not sometimes want to see someone in completely different circumstances/with different traits and flaws to u. personally i would find it incredibly boring if i could relate to every single companion

will forever be haunted by the fact that this so easily could've happened and it would've made sense. "bigeneration has never happened before". so the doctor split between what they *were* and what they *are now* why couldn't the clothes have done that. we watched the clothes change from 13 to 14 it's not unreasonable to assume those are literally the same clothes just, y'know, regenerated

but we live in a world where ncuti served in pants (as the brits say) the entire time and slayed top to bottom so we're in a good timeline <3

getting back into reading the edas i can't stop thinking abt how a lot of people say "eight is a different character in his disparate media (edas, comics, big finish) but that just... isn't really true, at least for me.

i read late 90s books and can hear paul mcgann like listening to a 2000s or even 2010s audio story.

people will also bring up his demeanor and whatnot and like yeah! characters shift across their lives! eight was a bit more actionable and brusque then went through the war in heaven. he was mellowed by the time he met charley. you can listen to him shift and grow and change across his big finish stories as well. all the while he's been this soft, aloof, silly, witty, romantic (in the classical sense), loveable goof with a serious duty, and so on.

and honestly that's way cooler!! because those sources had a singular movie to pull from for characterization (by and large; idk how much cross-polination there was of writers between the series) and mcgann's stellar performance. he came in, absolutely slayed in 90 minutes, and that one performance is carrying the character to this day and that's incredibly cool.

ANYWAYS tee hee read the edas, listen to big finish, etc etc even by you know what if necessary, paul mcgann slays now and forever ty for coming to my tedtalk

I love that Helen and the Doctor, having spent so much time on 20th century Earth, have a shared culture, which is completely alien to Liv. She doesn't get any of their cultural references while the two of them are giggling away. It's such a nice bonding experience for them, considering that Helen is the one who usually feels excluded, and a wonderful way to flesh out Liv as a non-contemporary companion. Nuwho, take notes.
