Grunge is NOT dead is back next week – new venue but same grungey music, old and new. Three bands for you to check out: C.lou.d Dogs, Herd Behaviour and Radio Seattle. We gave a debut to this rather fine little song at Ultramega back in July and it might just get an outing next week too, if you ask nicely enough. Chris Cornell 1964-2017 I never wanted to write these words down for you… Desperately sad and incomprehensible news today, to hear of Chris Cornell's tragic passing, aged only 52.

My occasional series on Pearl Jam tour posters has proved pretty occasional, all things considered. So, to remedy this (somehow, but don’t ask for details), I’ve decided to start up a second occasional series. This second series has the working title of “Alt rock bands from the early 90s that weren’t strictly speaking grunge as such, but included similarities to the grunge bands, be that in sound…

Spring is here again – it keeps happening every year seemingly – so what better way to celebrate nature’s perennial revivification and those lengthening evenings than a grunge night. Radio Seattle is kicking the year off with an unplugged set courtesy of Jonny and Mark (and a couple of new songs, including one pushing the grunge envelope a touch but which you’d be foo-lish to gainsay…). Yes,…

On 4 March 1861, just shy of 156 years ago, Abraham Lincoln stood before the Capitol to deliver his first inaugural address. Seven southern states had recently seceded from the union, and the country faced imminent conflict. In a febrile, fissiparous atmosphere, Lincoln presented a clear-headed of his determination to preserve, protect and defend the United States Constitution following his…

Riot Act turned 14 earlier this month, along with its immediate predecessor Binaural a somewhat underrated album in the middle of the Pearl Jam pack.* Both albums were critically acclaimed on release, but over time their lustre has seemingly dimmed for many (though not for me; they remain strong personal favourites). Unsurprisingly, perhaps, it’s the early albums, along with the more overtly…

Sometimes when writing blog posts, I get a touch of writer’s block. Well, nearly always in fact. This block manifests itself in varying ways and to varying degrees; it can be a little while after the event before some reviews emerge blinking into the sunlight.* Other times I get distracted by ‘researching’ things to include in the post, be that youtube clips from the gig/tour or official videos…

Radio Seattle, The Edge, Croydon, 07.04.16
Fresh from our gig at The Edge in Croydon earlier this month, Radio Seattle are back in action next Saturday, 30 April, for an evening of grunge-filled frivolity at the Back Door @ the Secombe in Sutton.
We’re being supported by two acts. Free Recovery are a mighty fine grunge band and we’re looking forward to catching them live ourselves! Ones to watch – Classic Rock Magazine have got them firmly on their radar, and you can check out their EP at www.freerecovery.band. Opening on the night are blues rock band Trident Waters, about whom we’ve also heard great things.
Tickets £6 on the door; to avoid disappointment, as the well-worn saying goes, book here or via the Box Office on 02037 719055. Doors 7.30pm. See y’all there! #spreadthegrungelove

Joao and Paul, The Edge, Croydon, 07.04.16
So, how did the Croydon gig go, I hear you ask? Well, that’s very kind of you to enquire, good sir, an enjoyable evening’s entertainment was had by all. You’ll find our setlist on the Gigs page. The Edge has a great vibe to it for live music. As well as ourselves, the punters were entertained by Joe’s Brothers in Chains Unplugged tribute to Alice in Chains (which I missed unfortunately, due to late-night London transport necessities, but which I hope to catch next time), Death to the Pixies (who nailed the Pixies sound), 8.33 (a grungey blues jam; the guitarist had some lovely licks, as the saying goes), and a chap at the start whose name I didn’t catch, but who gave us excellent covers of ‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night’, ‘Zero’, ‘Disarm’,  and a Tool song (whose name I also didn’t catch). We’ll be back at The Edge in the summer, so watch this space for a date and hope to see you there.

Stolen from the stage after Death to the Pixies’ set: damn fine setlist!

On the face of it, there’s seemingly little to connect Prince Rogers Nelson, whose tragic death at the age of 57 occurred on Thursday, with the Seattle grunge scene. Funky, funny, sexy, sensual, soulful, playful, vibrant, colourful; these may not be words that necessarily first spring to mind when thinking about grunge. For those…

Radio Seattle are back in action, at The Edge in Croydon on Thursday 7 April. You’ll find the event page here, where you can get us in a frothy lather simply by clicking “going”, or even just “interested” in a non-binding but hopefully positive, life-affirming manner. Free admission; you just have to haul your weary, grunge-starved bodies down to Croydon for some vital grunge resuscitation.*…

The image is, appropriately enough, a little blurry. It ought to be frayed round the edges too. The middle of March bears witness to two regular celebratory events, neither connected to George Eliot: one designed to appeal to mathematicians; one to the Irish and all lovers of Guinness; and both to Guinness-loving mathematicians, or which there are probably quite a few.* (more…)
