I understand the logistical reasons to make him grow up in a few days so they could cast a 18 years old actor instead of having a baby anomatronic on set all the time, and it's probably more interesting that he can talk back. I also guess it brings out something new and different in all the characters and they're almost balancing it out interestingly - it's still a strange kind of situation to have all the women in the cast be a variation of un-motherly while the men (except jonny but he generally counts as gender-neutral in the narrative) turn out or discover themselves surprisingly attached to the concept of family, but, on a character to character basis, the reasoning is coherent with their backstory and temperament, so, fine.

But with Dutch! Oh, the delight! It's not even to see her having to teach a child and be forced to confront that her own childhood was twenty layers of fucked-up, although this is also neat - but it's that we get to see the pinpoint moment where she sees the child as something she can mold into yet another ride-or-die jaquobi who will protect her and take her defense. That's the absolute icing on the cake of fucked-up coping mechanisms, we know she has been going through life making sure that the codependency goes both ways so her two husbands would rescue her from everything she can't rescue herself from, but now we get to see her try it with a boy who hasn't yet had the time to sink deep int he throes of caring for her and is only surface-level admirative, and it backfires immediately because of that!

(and how it messes up the work done on dav in the same breath! because now he can turn all of his sheperd dog instinct towards someone who is vulnerable in much less complicated ways than dutch is! god the writing is good in this season)

for the bit i think they should make an adaptation of too like the lightning that's pretty generic modern sci-fi, fine but extremely tame, maybe from the perspective of martin or carlyle, but good enough that people will be compelled to read the book of the tv show they like

I hesitate between open heart and the shaving fic 🤔

Why do I suspect open heart references surgery rather than a nice little romantic discussion (could be both. At the same time. ...no?)

Well! I'm not gonna defend myself, It could have! It sort of does! It's a piece of a Nastya/Aurora fic that I wrote in a daze one morning this winter when I missed my girls. It's about Nastya opening a panel on Aurora to go mess with her circuitry for "repairs" reasons and getting a little too excited about getting her hands on the giant spaceship's mechanical systems, while Aurora tries to express worry at the thought of having a squishy minuscule human touch her hyper high voltage insides. It's supposed to be about them expressing love and intimacy in very different ways because well, they are very different lifeforms with very different perspectives and priorities, so it is cute and romantic!

Now to be fair, I was truly not well while writing it so the result was bad and did not manage to go anywhere it would have been interesting for it to go, so I just left it hanging. But. Eventually I'll write something coherent with the same premise, and that day I imagine I'll be happy to still have what's in this file to recycle the few good sentences, so in my head it counts as a wip still.

"finally. The shaving fic" made me laugh, so I have to pick that one.

I honestly can't really explain why it's named like this anymore because it's from like, 2022, I think it's just because I was waiting to see if other people were gonna pick up on the idea by themselves and when they didn't I accepted my destiny and started writing it myself? Il might also be that it's for pathologic 2 and early on with pathologic 2 I started like, seven "wips" with vague ideas that were mostly me feeling out the shape of words for a paragraph or two until I actually sat down and committed to write something.

So anyway. There's a handful of good shaving fics about characters shaving each other's beards which make good use of the way the main character has a privilege to use cutting tools, but. There's a character who has his entire head shaved off and it's also for important reasons to him, so I thought someone would eventually put these two concepts in a text together but apparently I have to do everything myself. Well. I was doing it myself a lot faster before I started writing another multi chapter fic, but every three months I remember to add a few lines to it so eventually it'll get completed!

Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

When I was younger and researching the autism diagnosis criteria and symptoms, I thought “oh I couldn’t POSSIBLY be autistic.” Because when I read “takes everything literally” I thought it literally meant EVERYTHING and I was like “I don’t take EVERYTHING literally, just most things!” And I just realized the other day that it didn’t actually mean EVERYTHING and that was an overstatement.
