I never got that and always hated the idea of them hating each other. Just no.

Canon: Both Sirius and Voldemort mention Bellatrix and Rodolphus together in Goblet of Fire, as a married couple. They torture the Longbottoms together and she defends him (alongside Rabastan and Barty) during her trial. She and Rodolphus are paired together in the Department of Mysteries. In the Battle of the Seven Potters, Rodolphus takes a curse meant for Bellatrix. In Cursed Child, Delphi refers to him as 'Bellatrix's loyal husband'.

Rowling: She took a pureblood husband, because that was what was expected of her, but her true love was always Voldemort.

Somehow, fanon: Bellatrix hated Rodolphus! She was forced to marry him! He was...abusive.

So as I've been working on my Tedromeda-centric WIP, I've also ended up deciding to bring in a subplot for Bellatrix. She's a recent Hogwarts grad, her parents are busy trying to find her a husband, and while Andromeda is making eyes at the sweet boy from Hufflepuff, Bellatrix is falling into the orbit of the Death Eaters.

I've never felt very confident about writing Bellatrix as a POV character, but I'm really enjoying it. And I'm really liking the dynamic that's developing between her and Rodolphus. I'd almost call it sweet if they weren't both such awful people lol

The fic still isn't quite ready to start posting, but here's an excerpt I couldn't wait to share:

The Selwyns’ garden was a dark, creepy mess: hemlock and belladonna growing in the flowerbed, Devil’s Snare creeping up the walls, and venemous tentacula snapping at passersby. Rodolphus turned as they emerged and drew his wand. “Duel me,” he said. “What?” Bellatrix asked. “Oh, I heard you talking to Yaxley,” he said with a smirk. “You like duels and curses? So do I. Let’s see if you can beat me.” “And if I do?” she asked, a note of defiance in her voice, though she was already reaching for her own wand. “What would you like, if you win?” he asked. Bellatrix thought carefully, scrutinizing him through narrowed eyes. His father was a close friend of Bellatrix’s uncle on her mother's side, and she knew enough about him to know what he and his friends were up to. “I want an introduction to the Dark Lord,” she said. “You know him, don’t you? Or, at least, your father does.” A moment passed, then he began to laugh. “I’m not joking!” Bellatrix said, stomping her foot against the ground to emphasize her point. The tall, thin heel clanked against the stones, sounding less impressive than she had hoped for. “No, I didn’t think you were,” said Rodolphus. “Alright. Sure. If you beat me in a duel, I’ll introduce you. And if I win, you’ll go to the opera with me next weekend. Does that sound fair?” Bellatrix had never been fond of the opera, but she found, to her surprise, that she wouldn’t mind spending more time in the company of Rodolphus Lestrange. In any case, she didn’t intend to lose. “Alright. Do your worst.”

Absolutely not. I would never allow myself to fraternize with Rodolphus in that way. Not only would that make our dynamic uncomfortable, but I do not seek out disappointment.

‘Wait, who is it from?’

Rodolphus skimmed the card, then hastily tucked it at the back of the fireplace, almost out of sight.

‘Wait, who is it from?’ Bellatrix asked.

‘Just an old school friend, it's nothing.’ Rodolphus assured her.

At his attempt at being casual, Bellatrix’s curiosity got the better of her. Who was it from? An old girlfriend? That would explain his secrecy.

She reached past him, ignoring his protests, and swiped the card.

It was an ugly thing; not the usual pureblood portrait - in fact, the card wasn’t even moving. It was positively muggle.

She made to remark on it as she flipped the card open, but the familiar handwriting stopped her in her tracks.

Dear Bella and Rodolphus

Have a good Christmas, it would be lovely to see you in the new year. Do send an owl

Lots of love, Andromeda, Ted, and baby Nymphadora

Three oversized kisses finished the card.

There was nothing more to say. Bellatrix put the card back in its place and offered Rodolphus a small smile, one that meant I know, you told me so.

Instead of gloating, he took her hand, kissing it gently.

‘I didn’t know they’d had a baby.’ She sighed.

He squeezed her hand. ‘Soon, ma cherie.’

Bella because Rodolphus isn’t far and he’d absolutely beat the hell out of Sirius if he physically attacked his wife. (On a side note, I think Bella would still win, even in a fist fight.)
