icarusdolohov:
Icarus had never thought about it before, but it seemed like the realization had just run him over. Why it had been so easy for him to slip so comfortably into feelings for her. She hadnât changed. Not one bit. Rosaline was still the girl who refused to climb trees because she didnât want to hurt them, the girl who put spiders outside instead of crushing them. She hadnât changed since they were kids, and he still knew her.  But she didnât know him. He had been turned into someone dark, someone mean, a stranger in her eyes. He carded fingers through his hair, tugging a bit on it. âI grew up Rosa. I- things happened. A lot of things and I couldnât remain twelve and bright eyed anymore. I had to grow up.â He said it almost imploringly, silently asking her to understand, to accept him, but he knew well she couldnât accept him like this.Â
Rosaline stayed silent for a long moment. In their childhood, she had never spent much time with Icarusâ family. Generally he took to visiting her. However, she had met his father on occasion and could attest that he was a rather terrifying man. She finally looked over to him, watching his profile as he spoke. This odd moment of vulnerability, a crack in his careful facade was what had Rosaline turning her thoughts, perhaps the boy she knew was in there somewhere. Rosa. He had not called her that in years. It was always a carefully level Rosaline. She scooted a bit closer to the other. âJust because things happened doesnât mean you have to stop feeling.â She said quietly before hesitantly reach out and placing her hand over his, guiding it up to place it on the animal in front of them. âEmpathy...â She muttered, more to herself. Perhaps the boy she knew was in there somewhere and she would find him.

icarusdolohov:
From the age of six to eleven he had been attached at the hip to Rosaline, but he had been a child. Of course they had seen each other a couple times a year after that, but it seemed that after they went their separate ways to different schools, things had changed. âThis reminds me of the summer when I left.â He remarked, quietly. It was an odd thing to say sitting in snow, bundled with jackets, but he couldnât help but feel that the nostalgia around them was similar. His gaze had returned briefly to her face, trailing to watch her fingers thread through dark feathers. âYou havenât changed at all.â He voiced the thought aloud, more as a realization than a statement.
A sad smile made itâs way onto her face at the memory he spoke of. It had been slightly like this. That summer was abnormally cold, the wind bit at their skin as they sat outside together with the dog they had picked out together, a Labrador named Labyrinth. The memory always made her sad. They usually spent summers at her home in Bulgaria, and it was his last day before heading off to Koldovstoretz. She had cried, a year away from going to Durmstrang. âThat year before I went off to school was.... well I cried a lot. Missed you like crazy.â She said softly, looking over at him. âYou have. Youâre not my Icarus anymore. Youâre someone totally different, someone I donât know.â She looked at him meaningfully in the eye for a moment before speaking again. âWhat happened to you?â

Icarus looked at her for a long moment, watching her as she watched the hippogriff. It sent him back to when they were children. âI know.â He responded, gaze snapping off of Rosalineâs face to settle on the dark feathers of the creature before him. âYou did this when we were kids.â He mused, eyes glazing over a bit. âAlways put other living things before yourself. I remember when you used to take care of those roses your mother grew. Your fingers were always getting cut by the thorns, but you still went out there and handled them everyday. â
Rosaline fingers picked at the blades of grass peaking through the melting snow. She smiled softly at the memory, was surprised that he recalled such a small thing. They must of been about seven and nine when her mother had announced that she would be planting âroses for her Rosaâ. It had made Icarus giggle. It was hard to connect that young boy to the one that sat next to her now. So hard she almost forgot that she had grown up with him. âYou used to put bandaids on my fingers.â She mused, mostly to herself, looking down at her hands as she returned them to petting the hippogriff.

Alexander hummed in agreement, shutting his eyes and imagining it. It did sound nice. He knew it was probably next to nothing compared to how the Krums lived, but what he knew and loved about Rosaline was that all of those material things were meaningless to her. âThat would be awesome. Theyâd love you. Sofiya especiallyâŚI think she gets tired, being the only girl, you know? With me and Dmitry and Nikita itâs kind of a sausagefest. Our auntâs there, but itâs not the same. Sheâd be so happy if I brought a cool girl home for her to play with,â he said, smiling. He snorted into her hair. âFive goats? Are you going to convince Icarus to move to a farm too then? I donât think the clip-clopping is very mansion-friendly,â he snickered, the mental image of broody Icarus Dolohov tangling with goats enough to have him giggling. He tugged on her fingers. âOh come on, do not doom your son to a name as boring as Alexander. Name him something cool like Hercules or Solaris or something,â he mused, feeling her growing sleepier against him. âWould we get into a pile of shit if you just stayed the night?â
âAna never had time to be my friend.â She mused. âSheâs always been quite serious, a lot of the time told me to get my feet and my head back on the ground. Itâs a bit like having a third parent.â She chuckled softly. âI think Iâd like having a sister to dote on.â Rosaline smiled thinking about it. âHonestly, I feel like I could sneak an entire farm in that house and they wouldnât notice itâs so big. But heâll have to deal with it. I will demand my goats.â She yawned, turning a bit, to rest her head on his chest. âItâs too late, Iâve already decided and Iâm willing to pinky swear on it. Alexander Dolohov he will be.â She squeezed their intertwined hands. âBut, doesnât the mere fact that you know Icarus be extremely annoyed for his entire life just make it all worth it?â She grinned lazily into him. âI sâpose not. Chair or bed, what does it matter. Though, I do think itâll cause a bit of gossip. Sounds entertaining.âÂ

Axel, with his curious nature, wanted to see what creatures many of the students had been whispering about. Granted what he got caused his stomach to twist. Seeing the animal bounded and chained like some slave caused him to empathize with it, even more as the girls soft voice spoke back at him. âI can agree with thatâŚitâs shame seeing it like this.â A sharp thought shot back to the Centaurs looming in the forest, wondering if they saw this coming or not. âThey are suppose to be majestic and wild. I wondered why they thought this was neccesary.â he spoke back at the girl, keeping his distance.Â
Rosaline looked back at the other, smiling softly. âIf they were just going to bind it up why did they bring it out here in the first place?â She huffed, fingers carding through the hippogriffâs feathers gently. âProbably were going to execute her or something of the like and brought her out here to get her agitated enough to harm a champion before they got around to it.â Rosaline voiced the thought more to herself, than to him. She seemed to snap back into reality, and the presence of another person as he spoke. âI think sheâs rather wild, untamed âviolentâ as they put it.â

âA lot of animals arenât supposed to be kept in captivityâŚâ She agreed. There was a thing or two she had learned about animals from her various aunts and uncles, especially when it came to dragons. âMe?â She thought about it a moment. âJust going for a walk. Getting some fresh air. I donât like being inside too long at once. It makes it feel like the walls are closing in, you know?â
Rosaline nodded at the otherâs words, looking back at her. âHippogriffs particularly donât do well like this.â She gestured vaguely with one hand as she studied the other. Her head tilted to the side. âThere are so many people on these grounds it always feels like youâre elbow to elbow with another person.â She mused. âWould you rather be home with your family? Shame they arenât allowing us.â

Icarus couldnât say he was overly surprised to see Rosaline petting a clearly wild beast, but it didnât make him any less troubled. âRosaline?â He called, eyebrows drawing together. He wasnât too concerned about bowing to the creature, but none-the-less stayed lower than it as he moved to sit next to the girl, not wanting it to somehow lash out and injure one of them. âHow long have you been out here?â He inquired, resting his arms over his knees. âItâs too cold to be sitting in the snow playing with some violent creature.â Icarus looked over at her, taking in her hands and face, tinged red by the cold.Â
Rosalineâs eyelids pressed shut as she heard the voice of the person lurking behind her. Icarus. She finally opened them when he sat down near her. âIâm not sure. An hour, perhaps two.â She responded casually, not yet looking at him, instead keeping her gaze trained on the animal before her. âMight I remind you that you have no authority over what I do?â Rosaline finally looked at him, not delivering the line overly-bitterly or harshly, but rather as if it was a simple fact that she perhaps should make him aware of.Â

Nari had been taking a walk, examining some of the winter lichen growing on trees on the grounds when she spotted a hippogriff, and upon further examination, a girl sitting next to it. Sheâd immediately crossed over to the two of them, frowning as she drew closer and noticed the state the animal was in. She knew the animal would not be able to bow back or acknowledge her in any way, but she paused to crouch nonetheless, making sure it knew she respected it, before she moved closer and sat down next to the girl. âItâs cruel of them to chain her down like this. Sheâs only behaving in her nature.â
Rosaline looked over at the other briefly as she sat. âIâm not sure what theyâre doing with her,â she spoke, fingers still moving over itâs chest in what she hoped to be a soothing manner. âItâs my impression that they believe her to be... abnormal.â Rosaline finished, returning her gaze back to the other for a moment. âI think they may kill her.â Her eyebrows scrunched together, frown making itâs way onto her face. âWhat are you doing out here, anyway? Itâs quite cold.â Rosaline made the observation offhandedly, as if it did not affect her, despite her nose and cheeks being tinged pink.

Alexander was quiet for a long moment, sighing into her hair as she spoke. He wished there was a way to help her out of this but he didnât know how. Besides, she seemed to have accepted the situation, as foul as it was. âStillâŚif itâs ever too much just say the word. Iâll break you out of whatever insane fortress they live in, and we can change our names, leave Europe and go hide out in - in South Africa or Peru or something,â he said eventually, cracking a small smile. He was joking mostly, but in reality, if Rosaline asked him to do it, heâd help her out in a heartbeat. He pulled her back into him, and wrapped his arms around her. He could tell sheâd fallen deep into thought, and he didnât want her stressing out even more now, so he moved one hand up to poke at her cheek. âYouâre thinking too loudly. You said it yourself. Everythingâs going to be fine. And even if itâs not, weâll make sure it is eventually.â He smiled at the soft and quick press of her lips to his finger, reaching back down to tangle their hands together again. âMe too, Rosa.â
Rosaline grinned, squeezing their interlaced hands. She had thought about it more than once - just... going, running away, but she knew sheâd never do it. She had everything to lose. However the clear flaws in such a plan couldnât stop her from dreaming about it. âThatâs sounds nice,â Rosaline hummed, closing her eyes again. âIâd rather live on that farm of yours though. All the animals. Could meet your siblings.â She was talking in half sentences now, sleep bogging her down. Rosaline wondered for a moment what would be said when the Matron of the floor or some mediwitch entered the wing to find them curled up in Alexanderâs bed. The thought nearly made her start giggling again. âYeah, Iâm sure everything will be fine. Weâll be happily married and have five goats and one son that Iâll name after you.â Rosaline chuckled softly, saying the words half as a joke and half as if she was hoping only things would turn out as such, as silly as it was.Â

Alexander couldnât help but stiffen, sure he looked as aghast as he felt. âYouâre not an object for them to own,â he said, a bit louder than he intended. Injured or not, he felt very tempted to storm out of the hospital wing, grab his broom, and personally go tell the Dolohovs how he felt about how they treated Rosaline. âEarly hundreds? I donât know, RosieâŚI donât think I can rock a beard and I think those are mandatory when you hit that age.â He reached down to intertwine their fingers as she spoke, turning her explanations over in his head. He didnât necessarily know if he agreed, but when she put it that way, it didnât quite sound so bad. Rosaline had always been a lot wiser than him. Still, the fact that she felt trapped in a destiny that she didnât want hurt him. He wished the world was simpler, that she could just break the rules and rip the pages of the script that had been laid out for her and toss the scraps into a fire and then spread the ashes, but things just werenât that easy. He immediately wrapped his arms around her, resting his chin on her head when she pressed against him, and he pressed a gentle kiss to her hair. âWell if the universe had to forcefully shove me in someoneâs direction, Iâm glad it was you. If I got to choose, Iâd pick you anyways.â
Rosaline smiled softly, grateful that the other cared so much for her well being, but mostly humoring him in doing so. She patted his chest carefully before speaking. âI know that. Which will hopefully keep me sane, as that fact will probably get away from me somewhere along in my life.â She paused a moment, fiddling with the otherâs fingers. âI know I donât belong to them or anyone, but it seems like it doesnât it? They took my surname and gave me theirs, marked me with this family ring so that everyone knows Iâve been claimed and insist I live with them now because itâs âonly properâ. There are rules to all of this and all those rules seem to point to me leaving my family and becoming theirs.â She looked up at him, a small smile still on her face. âDonât worry about me. I can see it on your face.â She patted his cheek. âIâm fine. Iâll be fine. Even after this school year is up and I have a new life... Iâll be fine.â Rosaline said it more like she was trying to convince herself as much as Alexander. She put her hands over his, closing her eyes and leaning back into the other, a mantra of âIâll be fineâ bouncing around in her mind. Her small smile grew into a toothy grin at his words. âIâd pick you too.â She muttered, pressing a small kiss to the tip of one of his fingers. âIâm glad weâre soulmates, Alex.âÂ

Alexander sighed at the aggrieved tone in Rosalineâs voice, and he gave her a reassuring squeeze in response. Like it would kill the Dolohovs to do one bit of work even once in their lives, he thought, annoyed. He banished the thoughts from his head and instead quirked an eyebrow at her, laughing too when she started giggling. âWell at this rate, weâre going to be the ones on all the covers next time around.â He furrowed his brow, leaning in a bit to stage-whisper. âHis parents wouldnât put a hit out on me, would they? Because there are enough things happening in my life that could lead to my untimely demise as is.â He scrunched up his nose when she booped him again, and then nudged at the digit, shaking his head. They both fell quiet for a few moments, until Rosaline broke it with her question. He went still, and then bit his lip, thinking the question over in his head. âI guess it depends what you mean by soulmates. Do I think each person has one person, and one person only, who is right for them, or that this is all predestined somehow? No. The idea of everything ahead of us being mapped out for us already isnât something I like to think about. I like having choices and those choices meaning something. Why?â
âThat or theyâd sue you or something of the like. They give me the impression that they believe I am theirs now. Itâd be a bit like taking away one of their face-cutting heirlooms I think.â Rosaline snorted, tugging lightly on a piece of his hair at his comment. âUntimely demise? Not if I can help it. Youâll live into your early hundreds if I have anything to say about it.â She thought a moment on his words, considering them carefully. âI... believe in magic. And not just that itâs something youâre born with and taught to use. That itâs something gifted to you, something special. I believe in fate and destiny and that plants have feelings. I believe everything has soul even if itâs just an ant. And I canât help but believe in soulmates, that thereâs some otherworldly reason for the person whoâs always supposed to be in your life.â She paused a moment, biting her lip. âBut I canât help thinking that if this is my destiny, I donât want it. And if I donât want that, then maybe I donât want any of that stuff.â Rosaline could hear herself rambling and cut her words off by burying her face in the otherâs chest. âMaybe youâre my soulmate, Alex.â She sighed âMaybe soulmates can also just be friends.â She muttered, voice muffled, eyes closing again.Â

Alexander rolled his eyes. It was kind of dark, but at least his parents being dead meant they didnât get to rope him into any archaic rituals. Heâd sooner strangle himself than let someone make major life choices for him. âYouâd think an âancient respected familyâ would know how to use a Smoothing Spell or somethingâŚor just use sandpaper,â he muttered. He was angry on Rosalineâs behalf. He didnât even know how her parents had stomached going through with all of this while their other child was missing. None of it made any sense to him. He couldnât help but giggle at her words, turning slightly so he could look her in the eye properly. âOh Rosie, you shouldâve told me I was the other man. I wouldâve made our secret meetings much more discreet than cuddling in plain sight.â
âOf course not, they have houselves for that.â She responded, bitterly, remembering the first time she visited the Dolohovâs large estate and was served food by a small, sad looking creature. She wanted to tuck the thing under her arm and bolt with it then and there. Rosaline chuckled, opening her eyes to look at the other. âAh, this is a bit overt isnât it? Our secret love could be found out. Think of the scandal.â She feigned seriousness for a moment before bursting into giggles, and tapping him again on the nose with her finger. Her smile slowly faded as her giggling died down, the comfortable silence enveloping them. Rosaline often got lost in her thoughts and this moment seemed to give way to just that. âDo you believe in soulmates, Sasha?â She whispered, face set in an odd expression of curiosity and sadness.Â

Alexander let out a soft breath, this one coming out easier than the one before it. He hoped that meant heâd be out of here soon. He didnât like being confined to a bed. It made him feel useless and trapped. Idly, he twirled strands of her hair around his finger. He paused, unraveling his hand from her locks so that she could put her ring aside. He shook his head exasperatedly as she explained the action. âThey couldnât force you to wear something that wouldnât maim you while youâre caught unawares?â He questioned, dryly, reaching over to touch her cut, before he withdrew and allowed her to settle back against him. Still, he couldnât help the amused smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. âHow is Icarus, anyways? Iâm offended he didnât bring me any flowers.â
Rosaline laughed lightly, pulling the blankets farther up the both of them and settling into the other, fitting like a puzzle piece. âAh theyâre an âancient respected familyâ as my mother-in-law says. I guess that means you have jewelry that cuts your face open.â She grinned lazily. âI hate that you know. Having âin-lawsâ, having a different name, having a husband.â She scrunched her nose up. Generally it would be rather easy to forget, but with the large ring on her finger and the fact that she was no longer a Krum being plastered over every cheap magazine in print didnât make forgetting easy. Rosaline absent mindedly drew shapes into the otherâs skin as he spoke. âIcarus would sooner be stabbed then bring anyone flowers, much less you.â She chuckled. âIâm pretty sure he thinks weâre dating. So thereâs some news for you: youâre involved in an affair.â

Alexander relaxed into Rosalineâs grip. His eyes fluttering shut despite himself. She was one of the only people that he felt like he could be completely himself around and that she would care about him nonetheless. He didnât have to put up any walls or pretend he was okay when he wasnât. âIâll do my best,â he murmured. His best was really all he could do. He had no idea what the next few tasks would entail and he was sure they would only get harder. He didnât want to make her any promises he wasnât sure he could keep. âEighty? Give or take I suppose.â He reached over a tugged lightly at one lock of her hair teasingly. âMuch better. Thank you. I can feel my healing speeding up already.â
Rosaline rested her face in the crook of his shoulder, pressing her nose into his neck and letting her eyelids fall closed. She liked the peace of it all, laying there in the wing with her friend, soft dawn light peaking through the windows. It made her feel, just for a moment, like everything would be fine. Like her sister wasnât missing, like she wasnât currently seventeen and married, like the boy next to her wasnât injured. âGood. I need you better soon.â She chuckled tiredly as she moved back from him for a moment to remove her wedding ring, dropping it with a ding onto the side table. âCanât sleep with it on. Keeps cutting my face.â Rosaline explained, tracing a finger over a small cut her cheek before returning to her previous position of being wrapped around her friend,
