writing historical fiction will make you google things like “when we’re towels invented?” “how much did a towel cost in American in 1885?” “historical average number of towels owned per household”

to be clear I personally would be fine with something like if an encampment made a public post and SIGN saying “we firmly oppose Zionism as an ideology AND we officially oppose antisemitism and the antisemitic harassment of all Jews. We WILL root out antisemitism from our movement.” That wouldn’t appease everyone but I think that’s a fair statement to make. What tends to be happening instead is an antisemitic incident occurring and THEN a response like “us? No! We couldn’t possibly be antisemitic because THERES A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANTIZIONISM AND ANTISEMITISM! Checkmate YOURE the antisemite if you think that.” But right now the step on of clearly labelling that antisemitism won’t be tolerated isn’t being met in many cases and it needs to be, BEFORE problems arise
every day is just like I want the protestors to succeed I want universities to divest from the arms industry I want no fucking cops I also want everyone to clean their fucking movements up and be publicly honest about antisemitism

Like this is the official statement from j street of NYU, THEE liberal Zionist (more centrist than me and many other nyc Jews on these matters) org from damn close to the drama! You don’t have to agree with them politically but when it comes to who actually is cracking down on protest movements, these people are not your enemies!
the other infuriating thing happening rn is people picking all the wrong enemies and having extremely little empathy or comprehension with Jews like. Frankly. A LOT of the loud voices on behalf of Jewish students rn or against antisemitism are coming from right wing and really conservatively pro-Israel Jews and organizations - or from republicans eager to make this into a partisan problem. Yet people have taken this to mean that Jews are inherently a right wing action group, rather than the reverse - the majority of Jews in America, and certainly I’d assume the majority of Jews at these campuses, are on their side. Furthermore, the majority of Jews, ranging from committed antizionists on their protest encampments to many nonzionists and liberal Zionists - and Jews who know how ambiguous all three of these categorizations are, depending on who you talk to - are not republicans or supporters of right wing Zionism and would love not to become a Republican plaything and are, for the most part, abiding by the central leftist issue of shutting the FUCK up when the cops or media ask about problems hurting them in a cause many support. Like I wish people would look at the presence of Jews in protest movements as a “wow my Jewish comrades are being incredibly and unbelievably brave swallowing and dealing with attacks on their own identity because of how strongly and truly they believe in the cause of a ceasefire and Palestinian liberation” not “haha no antisemitism here that’s a whole Zionist psyop out to get us who could never be antisemitic to Jewish People”
it’s confusing as hell because republicans have weaponised this into the ultimate partisan issue but people have got to be smarter about picking their enemies

I also genuinely turned this photo sideways to try to figure out if/how it was photoshopped because it looked like a right wing smear and low and behold no Calla Walsh posted it straight to her Twitter from her visit to the Columbia encampment

Something nice! I really like this book about Romanian baking, but somewhat unusually for a cookbook focused on very traditional baking there’s a whole chapter on dairy free and gluten free baking - most of which can be made kosher for Passover!

like I genuinely don’t want any of the protest sites to be shut down I want them to succeed! I want them to succeed! I just want the protestors to stop speaking so goddamn loudly for the Jews and how us good ones are so welcome in their camps and every claim of antisemitism is a false hilarious right wing smear that they could NEVER BE because it’s just them greedy world controlling Zionists out to get them when there’s been stuff like a Columbia protestor who posted a video unambiguously saying that “Zionists don’t deserve to live” back in JANUARY still being positioned - even if he isn’t one - as a figurehead/leader in April without any kind of sufficient apology like hm that’s been going on for a while actually

Like I don’t want protests shut down I want people to take active steps to recognize that this might be a problem and those wacky Jews aren’t all universal conservative psyop out to get them. We can debate antisemitism versus antizionism till the cows come home but the thing is that I don’t trust that someone saying that they fight to kill Zionists is going to be terribly picky about the difference between a Jew and Zionist in the heart of the moment

I woke up this morning extremely jazzed to go take on the world through collective organizing and am ending the day poking myself with a pencil to remind myself I am in fact a leftist but anyway. Having spent the entire pesach season so far straight up lying to community and family members that tee hee there’s noooo antisemtism at [redacted] everyone loves the Jews and we get on just fine!!!! While I prepare to batten down the hatch for the fallout of something big that happened today. I think I’m entitled to being unbelievably bitchy on the anonymous hellsite with the reblogs locked
this isn’t going to be popular but one of the things your Jewish comrades are doing is shutting the fuck up becwuse there’s nothing else we can do. Don’t squander it

Why bother arguing in support of trans people if you’re not trans?
very simple concept called believing in human rights

This is actually incredibly refreshing and a fucking insight into how much we all need to get off the internet like being in support of a ceasefire AND Israeli AND Palestinian people are all majority opinions whodathunk. Let’s get off the internet forever
