Another reason why Sakura is so amazing! Everything the OP wrote has been my feels! Well said, well said.

I was rereading Naruto, when I finally reached one of my absolute favorite NaruSaku scenes. In fact, this is my favorite NaruSaku scene pre-Shippuden. It says a lot, and it makes me all the more angrier than NS didn’t become canon, but I’m not here to rant.

Can I tell you how much I love this scene? Context is very important. At this point in the manga, we know two major things about Sakura concerning Team 7. And these are extremely important to keep in mind.

- She teeters on the line between liking and disliking Naruto.

- She utterly adores Sasuke.

More context is that basically, if she raises her hand, they have to wait until the next Chunin Exam to try to get promoted again. Sakura is not stupid. She knows this will hold Sasuke back in getting revenge. Going back to how she utterly adores Sasuke and would do almost anything for him. She knows his dream is to get stronger and stronger. She knows he is an avenger and how seriously he feels about this.

She also knows that Sasuke is seated somewhere behind her, which means he will see her raise her hand. She knows this. And he knows what this means.

And considering this reaction when he thinks Naruto will forfeit

He looks terrified. He has a “Don’t you dare!” face. If Naruto went through with this, Sasuke’s full reaction would not be pretty.

Another thing I’d like to mention is not only the length of Sakura’s hair (I liked her with long hair, damn you Kin…), but also this panel, which takes place during the second test.

This is Sakura before she cuts her hair, a.k.a. her biggest leap of development. She wants to see Sasuke piss, she fangirls over Sasuke before this, she really dislikes Naruto at times. You see what I’m saying?

I find it so surprised that this version of Sakura would risk Sasuke’s happiness for Naruto’s. I’m not saying she never cared about Naruto before the Forest of Death scene, but she treated him much harsher than she does now.

Another things I’d like to point out is that not once in this page

Sasuke’s name, a thought of Sasuke, of what Sasuke would think doesn’t cross her mind once. Not once. And I repeat, it should be easy for her to deduce the consequences. She’s not dumb. But she nearly raised her hand anyway.

I think this scene is underrated in the fandom. It’s not just amazing, it’s not just heartwarming, it’s beautiful.

* Sakura still supporting Naruto, saying that they were more than a family

It has been two years and I still am so shocked and confused by this patched-up excuse of an ending. So much was wasted. So much was unaddressed. So much was reworked just to make this ending seem barely possible.  Two years and I’m still a wreck over it. What happened to Naruto? What happened to the young man that was going to change the ninja world and accomplish all his dreams? I feel cheated!
