soulmate au where soulmates aren't even a romantic thing theyre just the person who understands/vibes with you most in the world but bcuz humans are stupid and sex-obsessed and amatonormativity etc so people SEE IT as a 100% romantic phenomenon but really its just a guy who could be ur best friend or your sister or whatever. Maybe they would eventually understand maybe they wouldnt. would just be funny everybody assumes soulmates are romantic but like..... who said that. casual dating and hookups and even marrying non-soulmates could be an expected and normal thing still. who cares man there's a one in a million chance of even finding them + they might already be dead. ur soulmate couldve died during childbirth bro

i can never write a soulmates au cause i very quickly stop thinking about romance and start thinking about the sociological implications of a world where soulmates are a confirmed verifiable thing

how it feels being the only lesbian

i could only ever write a soulmate story from the perspective of somebody whose soulmate died before they could meet when they were still really young (toddlers or something) and now they're trying to piece together this person who was destined for them who they never got to me via like pictures and videos and a few news articles and interviewing their old friends and family. trying to find their identity in this person they never even GOT to meet and they have their whole life destroyed because of it

(its probably a relatively common thing considering child morality under five years old is so high but maybe this person is particularly obsessed with the idea of One true love and a soulmate but most people dont really care)

their soulmates parents might be okay with talking to them just bcuz they get to meet somebody who cerifiably wouldve been part of their kids life had they lived long enough, its comforting in a weird way to know them, or they could completely shut them out bcuz the memory is too painful. anyway
