thinking about how alice and lena both have very obvious coping mechanisms, but for very different purposes

alice obviously disguises her emotions with humor because she's not comfortable with emotional honesty. she uses humor in social situations so she doesn't have to face her own emotions, especially her emotions about other people. she can't let anyone know she has genuine feelings instead of just sarcastic witty comments.

lena, on the other hand, pretends like everything about her job is completely normal and not concerning because if she doesn't, she'll have to face the fact that the very nature of what she does is immoral, and that she probably has decades of repressed trauma from it. she can't let herself realize how fucked up her entire life is.

which is why tmagp 16 makes me so insane because like. both of them broke those patterns of disguising or avoiding emotions. alice was honest about her feelings and lena acknowledged the inherent danger present in her life. because alice saw something she couldn't avoid with humor, and gwen broke the intricate system of rules lena created to convince herself she was safe.
