This may be somewhat lost on you, since I know you prefer higher heat levels, and I want to preface; I do like Tharntype, and it’s iconic and all that, but I’m really disappointed in it.
I was watching the first season and Type was talking about this trauma and I was getting really invested in the idea of a medium-paced series where Tharn slowly helps him get over his fears and realise that being gay isn’t bad, and they slowly fall for each other, and it would be really sweet and have a good message about dealing with trauma and so on and so on.
And then it decided to be super smutty, and it just makes me sad, because I feel like it could have been so good, but in the end they just added to Type’s trauma and IRL he wouldn’t have loved Tharn unless he had Stockholm Syndrome or something, and that wouldn’t have been fun for him... I know we joke about it, but it really isn’t a healthy relationship and it makes me sad.
I’m curious to hear your thoughts? Perhaps you have some insight I don’t.
Tumblr media
Yeah I don’t talk about, critique, or analyze Tharntype much because of this.
I don’t like non-consent (or dubious consent through the application of alcohol). I find it difficult to watch and nearly impossible to justify, even when homophobia or cultural conditioning is involved. I don’t personally have any rape fantasies (although I acknowledge that they are the #1 sexual fantasy for most people) so I can’t even identify with the kink component. I find non-con and dub-con pretty hard to deal with in a lot of BL, not just Tharntype.
What Tharntype did egregiously wrong was not set it up in any way to be even remotely consensual or kinky. Contrast this approach to something like Addicted which also has a ton of non-con, but is developed in such a way that if not acceptable, it’s at least understandable under the BL obsession umbrella. And that’s a shorter series.
Tumblr media
Tharntype also conflates gay with pedophile with no attempt at correction. Which is pretty unforgivable.
I harp on about Mame’s writing and how i both can’t stand it and can’t stop watching it because she does this AGAIN with Kla and Techno in the Love By Chance series.
Tumblr media
I actually chronicled my original feels on this show and it went something like this...
Tharntype the Disaster in a Nutsack
Tharn leaves hickeys on Type’s inebriated homophobic ass (not literally) + sets it up so Type thinks he’s been raped while black-out drunk.
Tharn is praised by Techno (later to be a rape victim himself) for not actually doing that to Type. Wait, if you’re gay, you need to be praised for being a decent human being?
Tumblr media
Tharn and Type start aggressively teasing, pranking, and fighting with each other. (Again if you want to see this trope executed the RIGHT way = Addicted.)
Tharn, unprompted, jumps Type and starts making out with him. Type breaks down and regresses, then starts having nightmares.
Tharn realizes Type is dealing with trauma and switches tactics to being relentlessly gentle and nice, caring for Type through illness, feeding him, etc. Under this narrative framework this is grooming.
COMPLETELY out of the blue, Tharn then forces a blow job on Type.
(Complete aside: BJs in yaoi are penance submissive acts performed by the seme to woo the uke in an act of power abdication. They have dirtiness/humiliation subtext and are almost never depicted in BL, so this scene is significant in its uniqueness to the genre, but still no consent. ARGH.)
Type confesses to his abuse experience as a child. Tharn backs off.
Then, suddenly, Type decides to have sex with Tharn because he “owes” him. It’s so weird and out of character and jarring for the audience and Tharn.
Tumblr media
They start sleeping together regularly.
Tharn ruins Type for girls. (Type tries to f’ a chick, but can’t get it up, so comes crawling back.)
There is the most contrived bad guy obsession plot line ever, I mean it’s straight up LOUSY writing. (I do mean straight.)
Tharn and Type end up blissful boyfriends. The end!
Tumblr media
There are ENDLESS problems with Tharntype.
Not the least of which is the plot.
What plot?
And yet, I too will watch it. It IS considered iconic in the field and its viewer numbers are off the charts. It piloted high heat BL in Thailand, and we got Why R U because of it.
But effing crack-balls on a cracker. My brain and heart hurt.
Here’s the reasons I think people love this show despite its endless flaws.
Tumblr media
1. MewGulf’s chemistry is INSANE. The way they look at and touch each other in this show is genius, and unmatched in BL. They are profoundly hot on screen together and no one seems to be able to get over it, even them. MaxTul, SamYu, and ZeeSaint have some of this magic but MewGulf broke the internet for a reason.  I do believe that film critique can make a distinction between performance and storytelling. I feel this way about literature too. I can appreciate, for example Atwood’s writing style (which I do) without actually enjoying her books (which I hate).
2. Tharn clearly flipping adores Type. Type is such an arse who morphs into such a ball of fierce angsty loving arseholery, that if you like the adoring seme versus the tsundere uke (who only the seme could love), Tharntype leans on that button HARD. (I happen to really like this kind of pairing.)
3. One of the most popular romance tropes of all time is enemies-to-lovers. The transition of the passion of hate to the passion of love is really fun for writers and watchers and has been for hundreds of years. There is a reason Pride & Prejudice remains Austen’s most popular work, not to mention Taming of the Shrew. In fact, Type IS the shrew.
4. Type’s love confession at the end is one of the best in all BL.
Tumblr media
So how do I feel about Tharntype?
endlessly conflicted
Here, have some Catullus;
Ōdī et amō. Quārē id faciam fortasse requīris. Nesciŏ, sed fierī sentiō et excrucior.
I hate and I love. Why I do this, perhaps you ask. I know not, but I feel it happening and I am tortured.

There are many things I hate about TharnType but Mew's acting definitely isn't one of them. The emotions on Mew's face in the scene when Type tells Tharn about his date with Puifai! This is a masterpiece, especially the second when he almost, almost breaks down and you can see his desperate struggle. And then he quickly puts on a brave face, trying to be a good, supportive friend, although he is barely holding himself together.
You are amazing, sir. This is exactly how you capture (and break) the hearts of the viewers with your acting.

it was a really important moment for yeon-su to tell ung 'i am in pain".
it was a dam breaking, a wall crumbling down.
it was the antidote of the scene where she opened the water and cried in the bathroom.

so there's a bollywood movie called 3 idiots about people being tapped inside themselves due to family and societal expectations, poverty and what not.
was this episode referring to that!?

after ep 15, I stand by what I said about why ung draws buildings - it’s really so much more about them being static.
it’s about forcing us to look at a building - what we wouldn’t take a second glance at - much like how he considers himself or his existence and how people relate to him… it’s about how easily he thinks he can be abandoned.
but I wouldn’t call it ‘immaturity’ or ‘lacking emotion’; I think it’s more of a silent cry to be seen, in the only way he knows possible.
because if they look at need his drawings, maybe they’ll look at need him too.

this is going to be way too personal than i hoped it would be. but years ago, maybe around 5-6 years? about 2-3 months into my first relationship a friend of mine asked me, “do you think love is a choice?” and i said with a huge smile on my face that, yes it is.
when i said, yes love is a choice—i figured it looked like that. i was immature then, but now i get it.
i figured it looked exactly the way Ung grew into this kind of person. this episode really hit me in ways i didn’t initially realize. when i watched the episode, i was even slightly disappointed that Yeonseo dodge the question again—that she didn’t explained her side again but i figure, it really must be so hard for her to open that up. And Ung going around reflecting on who he is, asking people if he doesn’t look reliable enough—trusting her that someday she’ll be able to tell him but right now, that’s not even important. And at the end when he took her hand and said to himself, he will spend the rest of his life with Yeonseo. That indeed is why love is a choice and love in its all flaws and butterflies is also for the brave.
I’m so rooting for them. I know that they are not real people, but Ung right there is walking around growing into the kind of person I want to be. People kept wishing to have someone like Ung and I don’t blame them for one bit—it must be nice to be loved by someone like him. But I want to be like him, long time ago when he was 18 he fell in love, had a relationship, it fell apart and got mended again and in between those moments in his life worked it out despite all of his fears, he grew up—gave this enormous amount of love to everyone around him.
i’m so rooting for them not just for their relationship but for their life. i can’t wait to see how it ends, i feel like i’m sending away a good friend. and i havent felt that way for a korean drama characters since be melodramatic.
