most people would probably drop their gaze after being caught scrutinizing someone else . but mon and rach have been friends far too long for her to feel self - conscious at something so small . especially when she got the sneaking suspicion that something was up with the other girl . nathan can't help but wince at her statement . it's ironic because there were a few times when peyton had told him that his asshole behavior would one day come back to rear its ugly karmic head . at the time he hadn't cared much . he had never been in love with peyton . he had only dated her because it seemed like the thing to do - star basketball player and popular cheerleader was a trope written into every cliche story ever . it made him look good . and before brooke , all he cared about was looking good on the outside . no matter how he felt inside . he was nathan scott , perception was all that mattered to him and his family .  it was funny how quickly falling in love with brooke had changed him . she was like a broken bird - beautiful and yet needing protection that he found himself dying to give her . she had been hurt so badly by his brother - the supposed good guy - that nathan couldn't stand to do the same to her . he had seen how she had been . how distant and cold heartbreak had made her . and he couldn't blame her . he just wanted to be there for her to let it all out and hopefully begin to heal . ' look . . . my past . . . it's my past okay ? ' he sighs , running a hand through his damp hair . he hadn't expected to see her today - she had shown up in his bedroom sometime after he had gotten out of the shower . very brooke - like in manner and demanding answers as she always did while he stood before her - bewildered in just gym shorts . he had to admit she was pretty sexy when she was all bossy . ' and that's not an excuse alright ? what I'm saying is - I can't change who I used to be and I can't blame you if who I used to be is enough to send you right back out that door . ' he points lamely at his bedroom door wondering if the dramatics help to make his point . ' but if you stay . . . ' he steps towards her , hands coming up to rest on the sides of her arms and grip the skin there - not too hard but enough so she can feel his desparate passion . the same one that slipped out that night he said i love you in the heat of the moment . damon wants to feel badly in this moment . he knows he has let a lot of people down and if his humanity was turned on he'd probably be eaten alive with guilt at this point . but , as it was , he couldn't find that emotion inside of him . the brunette cannot help the ripple of defiance that seems to pour through her belly . when would everyone around here stop deciding what was good or not good for her life ? just because she was basically the last human left in this god - forsaken town didn't mean they got to make all of the decisions . ' well , most of the time any way . damon had his moments but stefan's plans were less likely to end in mass destruction of some kind .
