To do or what not to do
Social media ethics seems to be something that has been learned through experience, we experience it ourselves or witness the outcomes for others.
Trends that tend to unearth is usually what we see online we perceive to be true. Examples can start with misappropriation, especially with memes. They say a picture is worth a thousand words but memes can be infinite. Memes are usually meant to provide humor but, in some cases, can be harmful. One that comes to mind is the Ugandan Knuckles, Knuckles a video game character transformed into a misinformed version speaking with an Ugandan accent. It’s humorous how Knuckles states “Show me da way” but further details in the meme shows characters stating “I have the Ebola”. It’s the insensitive nature that it becomes an ethical issue amongst those that interpret it and understand it and turning into misappropriation.
Abandonment can also create an issue with ethics, developers may try to build a new platform to attract users but if not maintained, users will leave and developers may just give up or give in. Google + can be an example, its popularity declined over the years as a social media platform and was abandoned because of its lack of users or bringing something new to the table.
Manipulation, Ignorance and Narcissism feel like Trinity of what our current state of social media has been and a strong part of how the population understand ethics. Online users may try to portray a specific persona to gain more followers. Some may see an influencer that has many followers, they may try to contact or create a relationship but some of these popular users may not even reply or attempt to engage in interactions with followers. The numbers show their so-called popularity.  Those who choose this route will try to gain followers by any way they can, using bots or buying followers. This narcissistic nature is what makes these “influencers” want to gain followers even when they feel more important than they may really are.
When looking into certain brands or professionals that have strong ethical codes, I would have to say Formula 1 as a brand and Lewis Hamilton a driver for Mercedes practice strong ethical codes. As a sport Formula 1 has gained many fans throughout the world. The ethics practiced by Formula 1 can seem very lavish throughout an online platform mostly because it's important to hold a higher standard for the motorsport and the social media professionals are hired to display that. An example that F1 displays is their strong guidelines, especially how their properties are shared. An example “Guidelines for use of the Formula One Copyright for education purposes”. They have listed guidelines for users to follow to make sure it does not alter what they represent. ( https://www.formula1.com/en/toolbar/legal-notices.html )
While endorsements are a huge aspect of f1 and their drivers, Lewis Hamilton has become a staple in the online community especially through instagram. As one of the only black drivers in Formula 1 history, his ethical behavior online and offline is used to help create a better understanding of cultures not only through F1  but also around the world. (https://www.thedrive.com/accelerator/36667/lewis-hamilton-named-one-of-times-100-most-influential-people-of-2020)
Times highlight explained "His activism has also moved the world. Lewis has brought international attention to the Black Lives Matter movement, through his advocacy on social media and at F1 events." It’s what and how he uses social media to have a positive influence for those around the world.
In my own experience with online and social media use, it’s important to understand the basics of ethics. It’s definitely important because some employers will hire companies to run background checks for social media. I experienced this myself when I almost missed out on a great job because of how I represented myself online. The ignorance and narcissism I evoked made it appear that I was different than what I am in real life.
Main concepts that I’ve followed and continue following to make sure I avoid in social media is making sure I am true to myself. Have uniformity, I personalize my interactions with friends and family with videos or photos. Most people recognize me for it now especially now with my voiceovers with for my cat. Avoiding monotony, I try to inspire and entertain my followers, maybe just like how Lewis Hamilton does!

News shifting into new gears
Morning commutes tend to be pretty uneventful with early morning coffee runs only to get stuck in traffic. Of course, tuning into your favorite morning radio show or podcast can make things a little easier but when you drive a 20-year-old Miata with just one station to pick up, it makes morning commutes pretty boring. That’s until I was able to tune into a local NPR station. My daily commutes became informative, filled with news or stories all around the world.
While the pandemic has changed our daily lives and the effects will be felt for years to come, NPR radio platforms were affected greatly during the pandemic. Going through my favorite forum online Jalopnik, I found out how much NPR was affected. While reading the article ( https://jalopnik.com/npr-has-lost-25-percent-of-listeners-now-that-we-arent-1844404346 ) it made me realize that I havent tuned into the radio station for months! Even NPR had an article of the decline on their own website! ( https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/07/15/891404076/npr-radio-ratings-collapse-as-pandemic-kills-listeners-commutes ) Although radio listeners have declined in the past several years, especially with apps like Spotify or Pandora as examples, access to our favorite media isnt just narrowed down to local, ad filled radio stations. Checking out the article ( https://www.niemanlab.org/2020/08/radio-listening-has-plummeted-npr-is-reaching-a-bigger-audience-than-ever-what-gives/ ) Just put things together on how we receive and gather information.
NPR has provided so much information spreading stories throughout our country it’d be a shame if would just disappear, especially because it is a non-profit organization that usually runs on donations from listeners. Maybe certain metrics on how it shares information can help gain a much wider audience. Influencers all over the world can grab an audience much quicker using advanced metrics, someone who is passionate about the platform and persuade followers to tune into NPR. Using Channel metrics using platforms like Instagram can provide quick easy access to what's going on instead of meaningless ads, maybe now my phone will pick up on that, which now leads into Behavioral metrics allowing more exposure to a wider audience creating more subscribers, listeners or downloading new content.
Allowing a mixture of brands coming together to provide newsworthy content may create a better understanding of how we absorb what is meaningful. So much garbage is out there that we consume on a daily basis and we may not even realize it until we’re already buying into a new product. At least trying a different option other than being forced to select certain platforms.
We all experience different ways of learning new things, in my example driving to work tuning into NPR station. The more I tuned in the more it became part of my daily routine. The exposure grew the more I listened, the more I thought about what kind of stories I would share, where would I go and that a big part of just experiencing something new. If online platforms can emulate what radio or television have provided for decades then maybe media platforms like NPR can gain a wider audience, well I'm sure NPR is doing just that because I wouldn’t be writing about it if it hadn't captured my attention on my morning commute.
