Max getting to watch her fast, rough, tough guy brother fall in love.

She didn’t know that Billy could somehow lose all the words in a dictionary as she listened to her brother stumble over asking a boy on a date.

Didn’t know her brother was capable of being patient. Until she watched him sit in silence and listen in awe as Steve explained the entire plot of “Halloween” from memory. Max knows Billy has already seen it.

She didn’t know that Billy could be genuine until she witnesses Billy give Steve the pep talk that would bring a crowd to their feet before his final exam.

She didn’t know Billy was capable of calmness until she watches him melt as Steve strokes his blonde curls through the window.

And she has heard her brother’s tears from her own bedroom many times. But she didn’t know how beautiful they could be when they are being caused because a pretty boy is telling her brother about all the places they should visit before they die. She knows he never thought he would make it that long or that he would have someone to share it with.

Max didn’t understand love, didn’t understand what it meant, and maybe she still doesn’t. But now she at least understands that when her brother has a smile that reaches his ears, or a blush redder than a tomato on his cheeks it is probably caused by Steve. And she knows that Billy is still fast, rough, and tough but for Steve he is able to be slow, soft, and gentle and maybe that is what love is. Maybe it’s something that Max could have one day.
