In an alternate universe, Astrid and Essek both have tenure in the same academic department and deeply dislike one another. They could be friends but they’re too similar and prickly. They each remain at receptions exactly as long as needed to be seen in attendance and not a minute longer. They compete for the same grants and make bitchy comments about each other’s research. They have saved each other’s asses multiple times, unhappily. As much as they dislike one another, the rest of the department is a bunch of back stabbing idiots. At least they’re dealing with another adult. The fact that Essek’s husband was Astrid’s high school boyfriend is just an exasperating bonus.
