I’ve seen the Ursula K LeGuin quote about capitalism going around, but to really appreciate it you have to know the context.

The year is 2014. She has been given a lifetime achievement award from the National Book Awards. Neil Gaiman puts it on her neck in front of a crowd of booksellers who bankrolled the event, and it’s time to make a standard “thank you for this award, insert story here, something about diversity, blah blah blah” speech. She starts off doing just that, thanking her friends and fellow authors. All is well.

Then this old lady from Oregon looks her audience of executives dead in the eye, and says “Developing written material to suit sales strategies in order to maximize corporate profit and advertising revenue is not the same thing as responsible book publishing or authorship.”

She rails against the reduction of her art to a commodity produced only for profit. She denounces publishers who overcharge libraries for their products and censor writers in favor of something “more profitable”. She specifically denounces Amazon and its business practices, knowing full well that her audience is filled with Amazon employees. And to cap it off, she warns them: “We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the art of words.”

Ursula K LeGuin got up in front of an audience of some of the most powerful people in publishing, was expected to give a trite and politically safe argument about literature, and instead told them directly “Your empire will fall. And I will help it along.”

So I see people confused about the magneto family retcon so I’m gonna try to break it down so people can understand.

Orgins

Magda and Erik were childhood lovers, they met at school when Magda was working as a cleaner for Max’s school, Erik would try to gain Magdas attention by making her necklaces or being the best at sports, A couple years later in 1936 Magda was deported into a detention camp because of her Roma heritage and ancestry.

In 1944 Erik who had been taken to Auschwitz found out Magda was in the Roma camp when he saw her next to his camps gate. Erik fought to keep Magda alive. He succeeded when he hid Magda in a corpse pile and hid her with his squad, Then the revolt started, which lead to Erik and Magdas escape.

For a couple years Erik and Magda lived together and had a child named Anya, who was later burned in a fire from a result of a hatecrime. Magda who was frightened, fled unknowingly that she was pregnant with Wanda and Pietro, and ended up in Wundagore Mountain where she was taken under the care of Bova and was believed to have left after the twins birth and died in the cold.

Marya and Django Maximoff

Now this is where the retcon comes in, it is now believed that Wanda and Pietro were abducted from Serbia and experimented on by the High Evolutionary, and were later given to Marya and Django Maximoff who the twins believed were their parents. So that just erased half of Magdas story involving the twins.

Now, It is revealed that they are Marya and Django are not the twins parents, But revealed to be their maternal uncle and aunt. Later their living quarters were attacked by villagers. Pietro using his speed, fled from the camp with Wanda and got separated from their family. For a couple of years Wanda and Pietro were wandering Europe. One day Wanda set a village on fire by accident and was attacked by angry villagers when Erik arrived to the scene, and rescued Wanda. Wanda felt she had a debt to pay Erik. So she joined the Brotherhood of Mutants with Pietro

Axis

They later believed Erik was their father after he revealed it to them when Pietro and Crystal had Luna. This again, was retconned during the axis event when Wanda did a spell that revealed Erik was infact not their father. So, you’re probably wondering well if Erik and Magda aren’t their parents, then who is? This is where another retcon comes in to give you that answer

Natalya Maximoff

Natalya is the mother of Wanda and Pietro, who was rumored to have died when trying to rescued her children from the High Evolutionary. Wanda met her mother during her solo run, when she was traveling the witches road. Wanda knew Natalya was her mother but was told by Agatha to not reveal it, stating that it can mess with history. Later before Natalya sacrificed herself, she told Wanda she was killed not by the High Evolutionary, but by Wandas father.

Magneto and relation

In S.W.O.R.D Erik and Wanda meet up after all the years, and have a chat, Erik had forgive Wanda for all the things she regrettably did, and stating that he still considers her as his daughter blood or not, establishing that Erik can be seen as Wandas adoptive father. Wandas real father is unknown, but it has been rumored to be The Whizzer.

Understanding the Johansson/Disney lawsuit thanks to Twitter wisdom…

Some say Johansson made a dick move because Disney is “the hands that feeds her”. I wonder if they’d say the same thing if this was Tom Cruise or Robert Downey Jr or some MAN of the likes.
