Unsolved Wanda Beach Murders (x)

Marianne Schmidt and Christine Sharrock disappeared Monday, January 11, 1965. They took Marianne’s four younger siblings to the beach in Cronulla. They arrived around 11 a.m, but the beach was closed due to wind. Sometime after, the group had a pinic. At some point during this time, Christine went off by herself. There’s no evidence about her whereabouts at this time. Also during this time, Wolfgang Schmdit had noticed a boy hunting crabs. He claimed to have seen the same boy in the company of his sister and Christine and another time much later. However, there has been much doubt about his claim due to the suggestion this boy was carrying some sort of homemade weapon.

When Christrine returned to the group, it was decided they’d take a walk on the beach. Around 1 p.m, they stopped to shelter behind a sandhill as the younger children were complaining about the conditions. Marianne told her sibilings that her and Christine would go get their bags they had hidden at the sound end of the beach then they would come back and fetch the children to head home. When Peter Schmdit told them they were going the wrong way, they laughed at him and continued walking in the same direction. The Schmdit children waited until 5 p.m. The girls were reported missing around 8:30 p.m.

The last reported sighting of the girls came from a local fireman, Dennis Dostine, who was walking with his son at the time. He reported the two girls seemed to be in a hurry and that one of the girls kept looking behind her as if she were being followed. Dostine did not see anyone else.

On Tuesday, January, 12 Peter Smith was taking a walk through the beach with his three young nephews. He noticed what he thought was a store mannqeuin buried in the sand. He brushed away the sand and discovered it was actually a body. The police were called. Smith believed he’d only found 1 body at this point.

The bodies turned out to be Marianne and Christine. Marianne was found laying on her right side with her left leg bent. Christine was face down with her head against the sole of Marianne’s left foot. There was a long drag mark leading to the scene. This suggested Christine had possibly escaped as Marianne was dying, but was caught and murdered. Apptempts had been made to rape both girls. Christine’s skull had been fractured by a blow to the back of the head and she had been stabbed multiple times. Marianne’s throat had been slashed and she too had been stabbed several times. It was also discovered that Christine had alchol and food that hadn’t been packed in her system. It’s believed these were consumed when she was alone.

Possibly Linked Cases

•Wilhelmina Kruger was killed in the Piccadilly Arcade in Wollongong on January 29, 1966. Her body was discovered by a buthcher when he arrived to work at the local butcher shop. She had been strangled and mutilated. Police believed that the murder might have been the work of the Wanda Beach Killer. Although, they never explained why.

•Anna Dowlingkoa, who worked as a prostitute, went missing Febuary 17, 1966 after leaving a night club. Her mutilated body was discovered 10 days later by a truck driver on the side of the the road. Police immediately linked her murder with that of Wilhelmina Kruger. Once again, they did not explain the reason for this theory.

Suspects

Even after a large investigation, a killer has never been identified. However, there have been multiple suspets.

•Alan Bassett was in jail for 29 years after being convicted of the murder of a 19 year old woman in June 1966. In 1975, he gave a painting to former detective, Cec Johnson, who had investigated the Wanda Beach murders. The painting pictured an abstract landscape. However, Johnson became convinced it showed a scene from the Wanda Beach murders only the killer would know. The painting was believed by Johnson to show blood trails, a broken knife blade, and the body of a victim. Johnson became conviced Bassett was the Wanda Beach killer. Other detectives, while retaining professional respect for Johnson, believed he was wrong. Johnson even went as far as writing a book on his theory. Before the book could be published, Johnson was knocked down and killed in an accident. Since being released, Bassett has maintained his innocence and even voluntarily provided a DNA simple. It has not yet been made public rather the results have cleared his name.

•Christopher Wilder had been convicted of a gang-rape in Sydney. This led police to include him as a suspect for the Wanda beach killings. Wilder emigrated to the United States in 1969. He later gained infamy when he became a serial killer in the early 1980’s. In 1984, he committed eight murders and attempted several more. He accidentally killed himself in a struggle with the New Hampshire police on Apil 13, 1984.

•Derek Percy has been imprisoned since 1969 for the murder of a child in Victoria. He was considered too dangerous to be released and is suspected to have killed more children in Melbourne and Sydney. Percy can be linked to the location on the date of the murders, but no other connections have been found. Percy died July 24, 2013 from cancer. Police hoped for a confession while Percy was on his deathbed, but it never came. Percy is still considered a lead suspect in the Wanda beach murder.

The case was reopened as a cold case in 2007 and in 2012 blood from a possible knife wipe mark found on the clothing of one of the girls was identified as that of a male but DNA testing could learn nothing more from the sample. Police are optimistic that future improvements in DNA technology will eventually identify the killer.

Peter Dinsdale was a British serial killer born in Manchester, England on July 31, 1960. He never knew his father, who left his mother while he was still a baby. When he was only 6 months old his mother, who was working as a prostitute sent him to live with his grandmother until he was 3. His mother had disowned because of his disabilities and epilectic fits. She referred to him as “the freak.” Neighbors described Dinsdale’s mother as neglectful and no good. It was also reported other kids used to tease him. Dinsdale changed his name to Bruce Lee in the summer of 1979, in honor of his idol and Kung Fu film star. Lee’s had became obsessed with fire at the age of only 9. At the age of 12, Lee set his first house on fire and claimed the life of his first victim. The victim who died in the blaze was 6-year-old Richard Ellerington, who Lee saw regulary as he attended to same school for handicapped kids. Lee set many more fires over the years getting away with each of them. Arson was never suspected to be the cause of any of the fires until 1979.

On December 4, 1979 Edith Hastie awoke in the middle of night with a feeling something was wrong. She shared her house on 12 Shelby Street in the poor England town of Hull. They were Charlie (15), Paul (12), Thomas (9), and Peter (8). Her three daughters had been staying with nearby friends and relatives. She ran out onto the land and screamed as she saw flames shooting up the stairs. She went to wake up Charlie and the pair went back to the landing in an attempt to rescue Thomas. He slept in the same room as his mother since he suffered from a muscular disease and had a hard time walking. But they were beaten by flames and rushed back to the front bedroom. The frantic Charlie pushed his mother from the window despite the 15 foot drop. She injured her ankle in the fall. Despite his mothers pleas, Charlie stayed inside to try to rescue his brothers. All 3 boys were trapped by the flames. By the time fire services reached their home, they all suffered from burns on 70 to 85 percent of their body. Only Thomas was rescued with less serious burns. Over the following two weeks, Paul, Peter, and Charlie all died of their injuries. Forensic examinations had shown that the fire started by the front door undearneth a letter box. Several pints of parrafin had been poured onto the carpet, followed by a lighted newspaper. There was no doubt that this fire had has been deliberately started. The Hastie family were no strangers to the local police. Barely a day went by when their wouldn’t be a call reporting some minor crime commited by the Hastie’s father. He often partner up with his son. Due to the constant reports and fighting with the Hastie’s, many false leads and suspects were noted throughout the case. Police grew fustrated until they learned that one of the owners of the Rovers they had put under surveillance were involved in cruising for sex with teenage boys in the city’s public restrooms. The trail had again gone cold until the police decided to interview any local homosexuals who were known to frequent the same restrooms as the rover car driver they had followed.

Among those interviewed was a 19-year-old man who called himself Bruce George Peter Lee. He knew Charlie Hastie and had been involved in “indecenct” behavior with him. This gave a connection to the eldest son and Lee. It was decided several possible suspects would be brought in for a questioning on the same day. All of the suspects would be accused in hopes that the real killer would confess. The detective wasted no time when he interviwed Lee. Detective Sagar told Lee they suspected him as the killer and that they believed indency with Charlie somehow led to it all. Lee admitted to the starting the blaze stating, “I didn’t mean to kill the kids.” Over the months, Lee confessed to causing many more fires and responsibilty for no less than 26 deaths. There were many doubts toward some his confessions mainly because of his physical handicap. Lee pleaded guilty to 26 counts of mansluaghter and 11 counts of arson acknowledging recklessness as to whether a life was in danger. He was sentenced to maximum security mental hospital indefinitely, where he remains today.

Haunted White House

Few buildings are as iconic as the White House, the residence and office of the President of the United States. Indeed, the White House has been the site of many historical events and has played host to a great deal of important historical figures. What few people may realize, though, is that the White House is perhaps one of the most haunted places in the United States. Numerous public officials and staff members have recounted stories of bizarre occurrences or eerie sightings. President Harry Truman once wrote to his wife that ‘[t]he damned place is haunted sure as shootin’.’ This list details the specific areas that supposedly see the greatest amount of ghostly activity at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The main area’s in the white house for paranormal activity are the attic, the North Portico, the East Room, the basement, the Rose Room, the Lincoln Bedroom, The Yellow Oval Room, the second floor halls and bedrooms, and the Rose Garden.

William Henry Harrison is said to reside in the attic. Along side David Burns, who was the man forced to give up his land to build the White House. They’re have been several reports of unexplained noises and whispers coming from the attic. First Lady Dolley Madison is said to haunt the Rose Garden, which she planted in the early 1800’s. A “demon cat” is said to haunt the basement. The cat supposely appears before right before a national diaster. It was said to have appeared before the stalk marker crash in the 1920’s and before Kennedy’s assassination.

First Lady Abigail Adams and Abraham Lincoln are said to haunt the second floor halls. Sightings of a British soldier, assumed to be the man who set fire to the White House during the war of 1812, have been reported in the second floor bedrooms. Along with sightings of Lincoln’s son and President Grover Cleveland’s wife. The ghost of Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, John Tyler, and David Burns have all been spotted in the Yellow Oval Room. Anne Surratt’s ghost has been seen in the North Portico. Abigal Adam’s and Lincoln have been seen in the East Room. Lincoln and Andrew Jackson are said to haunt the Rose Bedroom. The main hot spot for unexplained activity is Lincolns bedroom. Winston Churchill even refused to stay in the room after seeing Lincolns ghost by the fireplace. Lincoln’s ghost has also been reported by Presidents Teddy Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, and Dwight Eisenhower; First Ladies Jacquie Kennedy and Ladybird Johnson; and presidential children Susan Ford and Maureen Reagan.

* Facts About Amelia Dyer *

• She was nicknamed the “Angel Killer.”

• She is attributed to 200-400 deaths of infants. Only 6 have been comfirmed.

• She was born as Amelia Elizabeth Dyer in 1837 in England.

• She would prey on desperate unmarried mothers, who would pay to have their children adopted.

• Dyer would take the women’s money, then strangle the infants with dressmaking tape. She would dipose of their body in a river.

• Dyer continued these crimes for over 30 years.

• In the 1860’s, she opened a shelter of sorts for unmarried pregnant women. Some of the women would ask Dyer to smother their baby at birth. The crimes were never challenged because Victorian doctors were unable to the difference in still-birth and suffocation.

• Dyer later opened a fostering service where she would drug the babies with laudnum (an opiate) to keep them quiet as she slowy starved them.

• She was once found guilty of infant neglect and sentenced to 6 months in prison.

• Once Dyer was out of custody, she came up with an idea to not have to tell with the babies at all. She would simply adopt then kill them.

• Her services were in high demand and eye witnesses claim to have seen as many as six babies a day coming to her home.

• Police found evidence of 20 children who were in her care two months prior to her arrest.

• She was finally arrested when an address on the paper led them to her rented terraced house. They didcorved the corpse of an infant.

• Inside her house, police were met with the smell of rotting flesh coming from the kitchen pantry and from a trunk under her bed. They also discovered baby clothes, well as letters and receipts for her newspaper advertisements offering adoption services.

• 50 bodies were discovered in the River Thames. Dyer admitted, “You’ll know all mine by the tape around their neck.”

• On 22 May 1896, Amelia Dyer appeared at the Old Bailey and pleaded guilty to one murder, that of Doris Marmon.

• Her only defense was insanity as she had been committed to asylums in Bristol twice.

• It took the jury only 4 and half minutes to find her guilty.

• She was hanged by James Billington at Newgate Prison on Wednesday, 10 June 1896. Asked on the scaffold if she had anything to say, she said “I have nothing to say”, just before being dropped at 9 am precisely. She was 56.

May 28, 1975 - In Canada’s first school shooting, 16-year-old Michael Slobodian opens fire at Brampton Centennial Secondary School. Classmate John Slinger and art teacher Margaret Wright were killed and another 13 injured. Authorities found a note in Slobodian’s home indicating he intended to kill Wright and another teacher, Ross Bronson, supposedly out of revenge for getting low grades that would not allow him into medical school. Slobodian committed suicide in a hallway of the school by shooting himself in the head.
