there's just...no way this ends purely happy. I can't even hope for it because then I'll just be disappointed, and the story deserves better.
Of course the dream ending would be Anne and Mercante staying together, free to do what they want... Anne would finally have a family and Mercante would be released from the hopeless wish that's controlled him since his creation. Anne would drag him into helping people as they traveled through worlds, going on adventures with far lower stakes than they've been dealing with.
...but that's just not how it's going to go, is it.
Anne's main arc has been about her crippling fear of losing the people she cares about, especially in the face of being alone for so long. It compells her to save strangers so their loved ones don't feel the same grief. This fear was savagely reinforced after the events of Benjamin's mansion. And it's been shown over and over again that the dog-thing's warning about Mercante eventually erasing the memory of himself bothers her.
...like, really, really bothers her. I'd have to do an entire re-read to list all the times she's thought about it, and each time seems to upset her that much more. Because despite everything, she's come to care for, relate to, and possibly even love that unwanted eldrich creature. In turn, he built her up and encouraged her to be stronger than the girl that collapses and becomes paralyzed when in danger.
And really, the latest chapters have shown that he succeeded. Anne has gone through literal hell to stay by his side and help him; the girl even screamed at God.
So what does this mean for the ending? Well, Anne will have to take the final step for her growth and move on from Mercante's death. Because as much as I hate it, it doesn't seen like he'll be able to avoid the seemingly pre-determined fate. (side note, I don't understand that part - translation apps just can't make sense of the philosophical nuance of this story).
So, the last thread, after they finally kill Joey (die creep die) - what is Anne's wish?
I predict that Anne's wish will be for Mercante to not erase the memory of his existence, and to at least allow her to hold onto that after he's gone.
Which would mean that she's putting herself through hell despite knowing that all she'll be left with in the end are memories. She can't save him, but she wants both to be able to move on without regrets.
She really is too pure - I love Anne.

today’s chapter was delayed - quite painful given how hard I’m holding on to the edge of my seat.
I miss Mercante whenever he disappears from the story, and this series has consistently made each disappearance more stressful in a...good...way? Like, as the absences grew longer, the return carried that much more relief. And since he seems to be quite literally hanging on by a thread at the moment, well...I’m very anxious for some reassurance.
...it’s Stockholm syndrome, I swear. Especially considering that I’m attempting to read this through a shitty AI translator.
Okay, so in 262, Anne yells at God/Liata about leaving the mess as it is, after said being has finally understood her feelings and not wanting to release memories to relieve pain. Kish is separating them but just before they’re cut off, God/Liata releases white powder (which seems to be the source of Mercante’s power). There’s an explosion above Anne.
A bit earlier what is left of Mercante seemed to be focusing on Anne’s location; despite the lack of psychic connection they still seem to be able to sense each other. So either the flash of light is Mercante busting down to pick up Anne, him slicing Joey in half, or Joey exploding.
I can’t think of another story that starts with a powerful protagonist who weakens through til the end. Mercante’s decline contrasted with Joey’s transformation into an inhuman monster has led to my intense need for the former to kick the latter’s ass.
But...he seems to care more about Anne than getting revenge.
I’m going to guess that what Liata did was send Mercante strength. Strong again, he’s rushing down to Anne and about to carry her around again but in full monstrous glory - in contrast to the amorphous mass that was barely able to move her before. Instead of being grossed out or scared, Anne is just like… *o*
I’m worried that Mercante won’t be able to take a human shape again - but perhaps it’s possible that he retakes the ‘body’ stolen by the entity that is Joey?
Honestly, the question of Mercante’s final appearance bothers me a lot. The body of his previous host was completely destroyed. He was shown to be able to change his appearance but the extent of his control and abilities has remained a mystery; is he even interested in holding on to the last vestige of the host?
...I’m biased, I love his original design.
