Angela Alsobrooks, a county executive from the Washington, D.C., suburbs, is projected to win Maryland’s Democratic U.S. Senate nomination against Rep. David Trone, a liquor store magnate who spent more than $61 million of his fortune trying to beat her.

The outcome is stunning considering that Trone, the founder of Total Wine & More, outspent the Prince George’s County executive 7 to 1, blanketing the TV airwaves with more than two dozen unique ads in the months leading up to the primary.

A Missouri Republican advocated loosening child labor laws, saying children were "lazy" and should get jobs like she did at the age of 9.

In 2023, the Department of Labor announced plans to crack down on child labor amid a surge in violations after several states loosened workplace protections.

This week, Missouri state Representative Cheri Toalson Reisch, speaking in favor of a bill that would change a requirement for children under 16 to get a certificate from their school before getting a work permit, said: "At what point are people going to be self-responsible? Some people seem to think the government is the answer to everything."

"These young kids need to be taught self-responsibility," she continued. "And I can tell you my personal story. I started working at age 9. And I continued to work throughout high school when I was 14, 15."

Reisch said having a job did not affect her education and that she graduated from high school early. She added: "You know what these kids of today are? Majority of them are lazy. They don't know what work ethic is. But they know how to play video games all night. They know how to join gangs. They know how to get into trouble. Get a job and be responsible. Vote yes."

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem is now banned from entering nearly 20% of her state after two more tribes banished her this week over comments she made earlier this year about tribal leaders benefitting from drug cartels.

The latest developments in the ongoing tribal dispute come on the heels of the backlash Noem faced for writing about killing a hunting dog that misbehaved in her latest book. It is not clear how these controversies will affect her chances to become Donald Trump’s running mate because it is hard to predict what the former president will do.

The Yankton Sioux Tribe voted Friday to ban Noem from their land in southeastern South Dakota just a few days after the Sisseton-Wahpeton Ovate tribe took the same action. The Oglala, Rosebud, Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Sioux tribes had already taken action to keep her off their reservations. Three other tribes haven’t yet banned her.

Noem reinforced the divisions between the tribes and the rest of the state in March when she said publicly that tribal leaders were catering to drug cartels on their reservations while neglecting the needs of children and the poor.
