It’s my grandfather’s birthday today. He’s 95. We were going to go see him later this month, me and the baby, and my sister and niece, and my mom. Now I don’t know when (if?) I’ll see him again.

My sister brought me a dessert earlier. She waved at me from the end of the driveway as I got it off my doorstep and I made the baby wave at her. I wanted so badly to hug her, for her to cuddle the baby again.

It’s almost worse to have a little contact. A video chat with parents, a wave to a niece and nephew through a window. Feeling their love but knowing I can’t just hug them. The baby can’t be close enough for her to see them, to come to recognize them, to know how much she’s loved. 

I know this is the right thing to do. I know it’s needed. But that doesn’t make it any easier when there are little ones who change and grow so fast.
