In the span of a second, the blade of the halberd broke into three pieces, reconfigured, and fired in grappling-hook style at Tattletale.  The tines closed together, forming a loose ball shape as it flew, striking her solidly in the stomach.  She crumpled to the ground, arms around her middle. The head of the weapon reeled in and snapped back into place atop the pole. “Bastard,” Grue spoke. “Apparently, according to your teammate,” Armsmaster replied, seemingly unbothered.
can we please actually kill this man via stoning in the town square

What was he doing?  Why was he so focused on getting Bitch to admit it was over? Reputation, yet again.  He needed to salvage this situation, and the surest way to do that, to recoup his losses and come out of this looking okay, would be to get the meanest, toughest, most notorious of us to bend at the knee and concede defeat. He really didn’t know Bitch, though. She pulled her cheap plastic dog mask off and threw it to one side.  It was only a formality, really, since her face and identity were public knowledge.  Her smile, as it spread across her face, wasn’t the most attractive.  Too many teeth showing. “Lung underestimated her, too,” she told him, looking at me.
okay, continued forcing myself to spend time analyzing rachel lindt instead of letting her live in my worm blindspot for no reason. to recap: at this point in the story, she's gone on the ABB raid with rachel & had that gay little moment where rachel gave her her jacket when she was cold walking back home + got so close to taylor to inspect her injuries from lung that taylor thought she was going to kiss her. it had deep connotations of blossoming romance and taylor narrated some shit about still kind of being cold despite the jacket but the warmth in her core keeping her warm all the way back to the loft. now, although taylor is still only consciously ranking rachel at "i don't hate her" in her mind, rachel has now started doing shit like this.
one of the primary rachel/taylor theses is that taylor isn't rachel's dog, rachel is taylor's dog. it's established over the course of the worm that she trusts taylor completely implicitly. there's the part in the behemoth fight where the entire world is falling apart around them and rachel is still smug and happy about taylor having a plan. there's the part at the end that makes all of us want to smash our heads into the wall:
Tumblr media
she trusts taylor in the same way a dog would trust their owner even on the table for euthanasia. she sees taylor as smarter than she is not in a self-deprecatory way--there are plenty of people who you might call smarter than rachel that she'll happily call morons--but because consistently, time and time again, taylor goes up against smart pieces of shit who are trying to fuck the undersiders over and figures out what to do about it. and this scene here, where she's responding to armsmaster's attempt to put her down by insisting that he's underestimating taylor, seems to be the first instance of rachel's trust in taylor shining through. in fact, this happens even before taylor considers them to be friends, before they've had any significant bonding. one of the very first positive things rachel feels about taylor--maybe even the first positive thing--is that, when people are putting her and her team down, when odds look grim, taylor can be trusted to solve it. it's actually, like, kind of bonkers compelling that rachel's first seed of positive response to taylor isn't "well, actually, i guess she seems nice" but "my teammate taylor could beat up this dickhole armsmaster."
it's worth explicitly noting, by the way, that rachel interprets smiles as like dog growls. the reason her smile is a little too wide with too many teeth is because it's not actually a proper smile. it's rachel being a growling dog, placing all of her trust in taylor. I Love You Rachel Lindt

I’d always found the capes interesting, I’d followed the non-gossipy news about them, but with the exception of a phase around the time I was nine where I’d had an Alexandria t-shirt and had my mom help me find pictures of her online, I had never really got giddy over any particular hero.
imagining 9yo taylor perched on the computer chair between her mother's legs while her mother helps her type 'alexandria' into google images and blowing myself up

“Why did you guys stop here?” Tattletale murmured to us, “We’re, like, half a block from the parking garage where we stashed our ride.” “I wanted to make sure there were no pursuers before we peeled out,” Grue replied, “Good thing, too.” “Right,” Regent’s voice was thick with sarcasm, “Because this is so much better than them finding us as we put the key in the ignition.”
clenches fist on the ground in agony. I want to see the undersiders car chase scene. I want to see grue (i say grue and not brian here because we all know brian is a perfectly normal 17yo boy and grue is a fucking crazy ass) driving like a madman while alec has to lean halfway out of the window with rachel holding his shirt to use his power on the pursuing heroes. i want to see them do 50 traffic violations. i want to see lisa backseat driving. i want it to be like the "do you just hate trashcans" animorphs driving scene but with higher stakes and swear words. i want to see them speeding 100mph in the wrong lane. it's deeply sad that there's never a single traditionally styled car chase scene in worm it's so tragic

After a second short advance from Dauntless, Grue had to back up a step to avoid touching the field of crackling white energy.  A step that closed the distance between us and Armsmaster. “Armsmaster hates you,” Tattletale told Dauntless, raising her voice to be heard over the crackling sound the forcefield was generating, “He hates that you’re the next big thing, the guy that’s going to be better than him.  That you get the easy road to being a big name in the Protectorate, and he’s the one that has to stay up nights, reworking his stuff, compiling simulations, coming up with new ideas, training in the gym for hours and hours on end.  Every second of work he puts in, he gets more and more resentful of you.  Why do you think you were the one member of the team he sent off to patrol the city and watch over the Wards, instead of having you come to the party?”
this one's going in my lisa meangirl moments compilation (i have genuinely got a folder where i'm saving every lisa meangirl moment i come across). it doesn't even work because dauntless has earbuds in but i just love tattletale as a character conceit during combat scenes. like, i completely love the concept of this character who has no weapons beyond her mind and her voice and responds by roleplaying an impervious highschool mean girl during life or death situations. she gets backed into a corner and her only possible response is to issue a stream of desperate invective against her enemy's insecurities. it's so interesting on so many levels

A smooth, self assured voice broke the silence.  “I assumed, Tattletale, that when you asked to meet with me at the conclusion of your task, that you wouldn’t be bringing the heroes with you.” A soldier in kevlar and a black balaclava was holding the stairwell door open for Coil.  Dressed in the same black bodysuit with the image of a white snake arranged across it, Coil joined us, walking slowly, his hands clasped behind his back, taking in the scene with an appraising eye.  Two soldiers followed behind him, guns in hand. Coil.  I felt my pulse quicken. Tattletale made a pained expression.  “Sorry.”
the scenes pertaining to the Lisa Wilbourn Torment Nexus were painful even before coil showed up but seeing him interacting w/ her is truly horrific. he's been forcing her to work for him against her will for years, with her ability to get the undersiders to crash the gala successfully explicitly being a test of her value to coil. (and obviously, if she's not valuable as she is, then there's no point in continuing to allow her an extended leash.) the first thing he says to her with his position as "the boss" acknowledged is an ominous judgement of her performance, and lisa--who has thus far never been anything but quick-witted about Winning social interactions, and who generally responds to challenges by grinning--just looks pained and does nothing but apologize. immediate shift in behavior when the man exploiting her walks in. nobody has noticed anything wrong or strange with her arrangement w/ their boss previously, and nobody will notice anything wrong with it now. lisa wilbourn torment nexus
