Beauty. What is beauty? A question which has given all the philosophers, observers and wise men sleepless nights trying to provide a definition which suits all sorts. But beauty exists both independently and exclusively contradicting every definition that's been used to define it. Stating the word of Confucius:- "Everything has beauty but not everyone can see it." Seems legit but even if it's true it doesn't stop everyone from developing their own ideas of beauty. Ideas that are convincing, ideas that are explainable and ideas that are appealing. And between all the assumptions, presumptions and preconceived notions beauty has definitely lost it's meaning. From being a delight to the soul, beauty, rather has become a weapon to condescend those who lie below the line of perfect curves, appealing colour of skin, kind of hair or particular facial sets, a judgement based on practices begin by foul people with intentions of feeling superior just because they were blessed with the features mentioned above. And this definition of beauty has become a tactic to garner fame, attention, rewards, superiority and create illusion for it has been known that beauty is the most feasible delusion.

And this definition of beauty perceived by the opportunists has created a division amongst the society. The first being the one with perfect sets of body features claiming their superiority basing it on their luck of proper DNA arrangements and the others, that lay behind in this race living a life based on their dignity and their virtues still keeping them at the end of the line and leaving them wishing if they could be beautiful. My goal here is not to loathe people for being attractive but to analyse the concepts that have driven us all so far to a demeaning end. Quoting a famous author John Green:- "That's always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people want to be around someone because they're pretty. It's like picking your breakfast cereals based on color instead of taste." Words put together so well that it feels beautiful to read it at once. But the question is how many people get influenced by these words and make amends in their lives. And here again I raised question to my own answers about beauty.

'Feels beautiful'. Is beauty an object to look and measure, is beauty a feeling to sense or is beauty an idea to endeavour? With every possible answer to existing questions we get more questions instead.

Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo

As it’s been previously reported, Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown had a shortlist of potential players on their mind when drawing this return up. We’ve since heard that Mark Tremonti and Ola Englund were among those considered and now we’ve got another name: YouTube star Kayla Kent.

That bit of information comes directly from Kent herself, who released a nearly 15 minute video earlier this week detailing her experience being invited backstage for Pantera’s show in Austin back on August 20. And while she goes into detail about meeting Dime’s guitar tech Grady Champion and watching him work, it’s her encounter with Anselmo that’s particularly interesting.

According to Kent, Anselmo immediately knew who she was and complimented her guitar playing. During their interaction, he apparently told her that she as on the list of potential guitar players for the Pantera tribute act.

“He knew who I was, and he came up and hugged me, and had super-flattering things to say about my guitar playing and he wanted a picture. We got chatting for a while and then he told me something I will never forget: he told me that I was on the list of potential Pantera guitar players. I just could not believe it.

“I asked him several times, ‘Are you joking? Are you serious?,’ and he said, ‘I’m 100 percent serious. I don’t bullshit. We actually considered you,” recalled Kent. “After that interaction I went up to Grady [Champion] and Steve [Murillo, Zakk Wylde’s guitar tech] and was like, ‘Is he bullshitting me? Does he just tell everybody that?’ and they were like, ‘He’s not known to bullshit people in private like that.’

“Coming from Phil, who is spearheading the new Pantera thing, obviously it means a lot to me that he said that.”

Celebrating the Life of Shiner

It has been a while since I've published a blog post. Since December, I decided to take quite a long blog and social media break. Many of you are familiar with Shiner, as she's been the face of Pawsitively Pets since the beginning. Shiner would have had her 16th birthday in March, but unfortunately her body could not quite last that long. She passed away on December 21, 2018.

Shiner tried her very best up until the end to be a good doggy. Before her passing, I noticed she began to have some trouble walking around and getting up on my bed like she usually does. She was falling down more than usual. I gave her a check-up and noticed her gums were a little pale. The next day, things were exponentially worse and I knew that this was not something she could recover from. Having seen other elderly dogs with the same sort of condition as her, I knew this was not good for her.

She slept in one spot all day and needed to be carried in and out to go to the bathroom. She was anemic and I began to feed her lunch meat and syringe her some water. If she tried to walk, she wouldn't get far before she just fell over. I called our vet and scheduled a euthanasia for her.

Our vet looked her over to make sure euthanasia was the right choice and agreed. She said her heart sounded muffled and it's likely that there was fluid surrounding it. It's probable that she had a hemangiosarcoma in her body, which explains her sudden anemia.

At the vet's office, Shiner tried to act normal so hard. She was walking around the room, despite not being able to walk at all previously. She ate every treat I gave her happily. She never takes treats at the vet's office. Her final moments were very peaceful and I'm glad to have been able to let her go comfortably.

As the title states, this is a celebration of her life. I am sad that she is gone, but at the same time I am happy that she fulfilled a long life that I got to spend with her. She also had so many online friends that adored and cared about her. To celebrate Shiner's life, here's a short slideshow video with some of my favorite pictures.

Within an hour’s drive of the city, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps came into view and pastures turned into narrow canyons. Not a common stop on the tourist circuit, Jezersko Valley is a coveted spot for mountaineers and luxury travelers in the know. We read about Vila Planinka in some travel magazine which raved about their food, wine, and sustainability ethos and just knew we had to get there someday. We walked into this 1930s chalet turned contemporary boutique hotel and could feel the positive vibes of this place, from the energy points it’s built on to the convivial sommelier.

He handed us a glass of wine to kick off the check-in process on the patio, where the sheer peaks seemed to spring from the pavers and bring the Skuta Glacier so close we could feel its chill. He told us about their restaurant, natural wine workshops, spa services, and adventure offerings, then led us to our room, The Lady Slipper. A kitchen, living room with a fireplace, wrap-around porch and bedroom with mountain view had our jaws on the floor.

“Enjoy your stay and we will see you downstairs for your Orange Revolution Wine Tasting.” The hotel’s cellar holds over 250 Slovenian wines with an emphasis on “orange wines,” a Slovenian biodynamic tradition of winemaking that predates Roman settlement and has been having a renaissance in recent decades. Sommelier and accomplished wine expert, Marko Koren, set the table with not just glasses and spittoons, but lemons, salt, radicchio and more tools to bring out the characteristics of the wines. Maps covered the nine Slovenian wine-making regions from coastal to karst, and our seven-stage tasting featured iconic wineries from Mlečnik to Gravner showcasing the best of these organic, slow maceration wines.

It was the father of Slovenian biodynamic wine Rudolf Steiner’s belief that a vineyard is not a plot but a living organism affected by the minerality, astrality, spirituality, and principles of life. With mother nature and ancient tradition as their guide, Slovenian biodynamic wines can’t be mass produced or mass exported around the globe…you have to come here to experience them! Our tasting flowed into a dinner at their Michelin-rated restaurant where course after course of vegan dishes appeared like art on a platter.

You don’t need the best computer ever made to write code. The main essential capabilities needed to code are a strong processor, storage, battery life, keyboard, and screen. Those last two components can be modified with an external monitor and keyboard, so they weren’t top of mind when I selected these laptops. A powerful graphics card, a high refresh rate, a touch screen, and other extras were just that — extras that could be nice to have but weren’t essential. I focused on the experience of sitting down to code, and how I would want a solid battery life to take my work with me, a solid processor so that the laptop would be able to keep up with me, and as much RAM as possible so that I could run multiple applications at once. 

The answer to this question depends on the setting. College programmers are more likely to use a MacBook with great battery life and portability while programmers who receive laptops through work may use a PC. Budget-conscious programmers could also veer towards the PC route, as MacBooks are more limited in price and on the higher end of the spectrum. At the end of the day, it comes down to preference and budget.

Remember that RAM, or Random Access Memory, stores the data of the apps that you’re currently using so that you can access them quickly. It’s kind of like short-term memory: it fills up quickly, has a limited bandwidth, and is focused on the immediate tasks at hand. If you have limited RAM, say 8 GB or less, your computer is going to run more slowly, especially if you have tons of applications running or even a lot of memory-draining tabs open. The relationship between humans and dragons

Dragons have been embedded into our history for generations. Study the cultures of the world and you’ll be hard pressed to find many where dragons don’t feature heavily in mythology or legend. 

Typically, in legend and in much of early literature and fairytales, dragons are to be feared. Giant, mythical creatures to be overcome in a great quest of good vs evil, with terrifying horns, sharp teeth and claws...and of course, the ability to incinerate you in an instant. 

However, modern storytelling has taken a different approach:

 1: The relationship between humans and dragons. Films like 'How to Train Your Dragon' and 'Game of Thrones' focus more heavily on the relationship between dragons and humans, presenting them as creatures that need care and affection just like we would give to our own pets.

 2: Not scary but friendly. Meanwhile, Zog illustrator Axel Scheffler has explained that he ‘doesn’t like his dragons to frighten,' adding that Zog ‘has teeth, scales and claws’ but that’s where the similarities end.

3. Dragons can be whatever a child wants them to be. They can be scary and evil, or cute and cuddly, they can have different personalities, and, as long as they share those few key features, can look however they want them to.

If you are seeing a lot of Gen Z wearing black, plaiting their hair into pigtails and giving you a Kubrick Stare, it’s all because of their new anti-heroine heroine, Wednesday. It has been just over a week since Tim Burton’s new series Wednesday debuted on Netflix but already tweens and teens are channelling the sullen and sardonic daughter of the Addams family.

Defined by the deadpan Christina Ricci in the 90s films, this time round Wednesday has been given a Gen-Z makeover. The series follows a now teenage Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) as she is banished to Nevermore Academy, a creepy boarding school, after an incident involving a school swimming team and a bag of piranhas. What ensues is an action-packed melodrama fusing the genres of murder mystery with horror and a dollop of teenage angst. It has swiftly become Netflix’s most popular show, beating the last series of Stranger Things.

Refusing to conform to patriarchal and social norms, Wednesday is awkward, wherein lies much of her appeal.

“It’s a new take on the teen trope,” says Shelley Cobb, a professor of film and feminist media studies. “It appeals to Gen Z – those born between 1997 and 2012 – and their ability to talk about cultural politics and the popular discourse around identity politics. Wednesday adds a voice to those things in a sharp-witted way.”

Ever since the character made her debut in the cartoons of The New Yorker in 1938, Wednesday has had a very specific and defined sense of style. More than 80 years later, her plaited black hair and sartorial black and white colour palette remains.

Pinterest reports that searches for “Wednesday Addams costume” are up 50 times year-on-year. White shirts, knee-socks and black nail polish are all trending. Meanwhile, the clothes resale app Depop says searches for Wednesday-inspired outfits are up by 1000% since the month began.

As we stare down 2023, we are no longer reeling from the shock of the coronavirus pandemic; instead, Pantone suggests, we are turned towards the future. Laurie Pressman, Pantone’s vice president, says Viva Magenta represents a prevailing desire for optimism, resilience, outside-the-box thinking and technological innovation so as to create a better world.

“We’re living in a time where so many people have been aggressive; that’s what’s needed to go forward,” she says. “We need courage, bravery, but we’re looking for something that promotes joy and is fun. Life right now is unconventional and challenging in many ways – I think we’re looking for things that help us escape.”

If it seems like purple prose, it is worth remembering that colour is central to the human experience as a means of storytelling, communication and connection, points out James Fox, the Cambridge art historian and author of The World According to Colour.

“It seems like a good and apposite choice for a period when everything feels very grey, dark and murky, and lots of people have lost hope. Essentially it’s a colour about the resilience of the human spirit.”

For all its unnatural, even digital-seeming appearance, magenta is evocative of clays, cave paintings, even the colours of the galaxy; the earliest plant life on Earth, predating chlorophyll, was believed to be a similar purplish shade. “It’s this colour that kind of fizzes on the retina, that vibrates – you can’t quite pin it down,” says Fox.

Indeed, he says, magenta is a manmade “concoction” that emerged in the mid-19th century following the serendipitous invention of mauveine, the first synthetic aniline dye. Its huge commercial success inspired others in Europe to chase after more.
