Buzz cradled the baby that had been crying for almost an hour now. He had not much of a clue about what to do with a crying infant, but a call to his mom and soon he fed, changed and was now trying his hardest to make the little girl sleep. “Who would be so cruel to abandon you like this?” he muttered as he softly paced around the coffee room of the police station. “You’re going to be okay little one, at least you’re safe here.”

“She’s stopped crying, I see,” It’s more of an observation than a question, a soft smile on Amelia’s face as she speaks. “I just heard from child services, it’ll be a while until they’re able to make it, unfortunately. Do you need a break?”

Don’t get me wrong, I was very pumped with morphine so I couldn’t figure out who would have sent me flowers until someone told me,” he said with a laugh. “But they were appreciated, and don’t be sorry or anything. I know better than anyone how busy it can get,” said Todd with a smile.

“I’m glad to hear you got them,” she smiles, “and that you understand. I’d imagine you’re going stir-crazy without work. Do you know when you head back yet?”

“I’ve had worse,” said Todd with a laugh as he looked up at Amelia, nodding at the handed tissue. “Thanks. Also, the water would be great. Crutches can be exhausting when you’re tired all the time. This broken leg will kill me,” he said as he wiped the sweat from his forehead.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” she offers a sad smile as she moves to sit beside him, pulling the water from her bag and handing it over. “God, well, I hope it doesn’t. That would be unfortunate for quite a few people,” Amelia pauses, and shakes her head. “It’s good to see you out and about, regardless. I feel awful that I haven’t been able to visit. I did send flowers, but --- I know it’s not the same.”

Jim hesitated a moment, words choking up at the back of his throat. “You wouldn’t,” He laughed weakly. Jim shook his head a little. “No, you wouldn’t. You don’t need to do that.” There were very few people on the planet who could push Jim into such a position and Amelia was basically top of the list.

“Not without provocation, of course,” Amelia notes, nodding. “I’m an incredibly reasonable person unless provoked,”

Todd had managed to make it out of his apartment for the first time, with crutches and the cast on his leg. Even if it was just for ten minutes, he needed to be outside and feel the breeze that didn’t come from a fan or an AC. Finding an empty bench, he searched for a tissue to clean his face, sweating more than usual with the extra work, and the heat, but just as he had it, the wind blew it. “There goes my last one, come on,” he said with a groan.

“You’ve looked better,” she notes, a soft smile on her lips as she approaches, holding out a napkin she’s just retrieved from her bag. “I think I have some water in here, too. You should stay hydrated. I hear crutches are exhausting,”

Oh, how he loved to wind Amelia up. Of course, everything he’d said worked. She was riled up alright. “Now now, I wouldn’t push the buttons if I didn’t know them oh so well,” Jim commented with a massive grim across his face. “Also you wouldn’t dare pull anything out on me. You know as well as I do how much that is looked down on. And you’re too smart to risk ruining your reputation, even if I am being annoying.”

“You’re right, I wouldn’t,” she agrees, “but I do have plenty of strings I could pull to make your life less fun, if I were so inclined,”

“It’s alright ma’am. This is the last box, I think I can manage.” He smiled before not evening moving toward the box, and instead opting to sit on a couple of plastic red and blue crates that had been stacked by the door. “Besides, I’m much rather stand around and talk to a pretty lady.” 

“Are you not working?” An eyebrow quirks as he sits, though the flirting that begins almost immediately afterward explains enough. “That’s --- very kind, but I’m on duty. We’re short patrol officers today, so I’m taking to the streets myself,” Hand moves to gesture to the badge at her hip.

I might as well wait until my roommate comes bac -oh crap!” He gasped out surprisingly when one of his hands gave out and slips off the ladder leaving the other to hold on.

She lets out a sigh, taking a step closer, if only to get a better angle on just how close he is to the ground. “Do I need to call the fire department to help you down?”

That should sort you right out,” He had another few sips of his drink, before taking a few steps away from the building. “There. Not directly outside. That better?”

“Quite frankly, Hawkins, that is absolutely none of your business, and if you ever mention it again, I’ll remind you that I’m always armed,” Eyebrows rise, as she does her best to make her irritation clear. “You truly do like pushing people’s buttons, don’t you? I always convince myself I’m exaggerating in my head, then I speak to you again, and it’s almost worse than I remembered,”

“‘Technically’, being the keyword,” she notes, an eyebrow raised. “Yet, here you are, drinking in close proximity to your workplace. Where people know you, and may very well mistake you for being on duty. How convenient. I’d say something about how it might be intentional, if I didn’t know you better, but I know you well enough to be sure that it very likely is exactly what you intended,”

Lucas couldn’t help but frown a little when Amelia talked about rumors. He had heard some around, but never about him and he couldn’t help but wonder what would they be saying about him. But then he listened to the next words his sergeant said and his throat went a little dry. “Relationship? Officer?” Jessie, oh dear god. Buzz cleared his throat instantly, rubbing his hands on his pants as he looked at Amelia. “Sergeant, I can assure you. We’re just friends. We’re close friends yes. Even before she came into the Academy, but I’ve known her for years,” said Buzz, hoping that would reassure her that his relationship with Jessie wouldn’t come off as irresponsible or rushed or something not serious. “This won’t get in the way. I take my duty seriously, you can be confident in that.”

“I’m sure you’re both well aware of just how dangerous our chosen profession can be,” she nods, choosing not to press further at his insistence of being ‘just friends’ with the officer in question. “This isn’t a reprimand, I’m not scolding you. As I said, I simply urge caution. Things can change quickly in a city that’s as faced paced as this one, I only want to assure I can count on the both of you to continue doing excellent work. If you say you will, and that this relationship --- whether it develops further or not --- won’t get in the way, I believe you. But I don’t want that to have to change,”
