July 24th, Rome
Now that we've made it to Rome (our final destination), I can catch up post a bit about Venice. Venice was probably my favorite of all the cities we've gone to. It is so beautiful with all the canals, and all the old buildings are right up against the water. There isn't a bit of modern architecture anywhere! It's a bustling city, but there are of course no cars. We found ourselves very entertained when police speed boats came tearing through canals with sirens blaring. We got public transit day passes for our whole time there so we could just hop on and off the bus boats as we pleased. The first day, we wandered all throughout the southern part of the city, and back up towards the center with a combination of walking and boat hopping. The next day, we took a boat out to one of the outer islands: Murano. This is the island totally dedicated to glass blowing. We saw a glass blowing demonstration where an artist made a jug and then a horse for us. It was also cool just to walk through all the glass galleries. Of course, we are both now completely round due to the amount of Italian food we have been eating.... Just in time for us to go to Rome.

July 24th, Venice, Italy
A post about Switzerland: I posted plenty of pretty pictures from Switzerland, but I never actually got around to writing anything about it. As you can already tell from the pictures, Switzerland is absolutely as beautiful as everyone says. We went to a smaller city called Lucerne, which is located on Lake Lucerne, a lake and city nestled between big snow capped mountains. The city has a fun old feel, with the oldest wooden standing bridge in..... Switzerland? Europe? I forget. The bridge was built in 14-something. Eating was definitely hard in Switzerland, so we mostly ate Italian food or take out. Perfect, right before we spend a week in Italy. We spend out first day just wandering around the city and looking out at the lake and mountains. It wasn't until the second day that we really got going. We couldn't decide between taking a Gondola ride to the top of the closest mountain, Mt. Pilatus, or renting a motor boat and driving around the lake and looking up at the mountain. We made the perfect decision: Both. We started with the gondola trip and hiked all around the summit of the mountain. At over 7000 ft, the view was pretty amazing. We could see to snow covered Alps and of course down into the valley and Lake Lucern. It was a little hazy that day, but the views were still phenomenal. That picture I posted of us standing on a lil outcropping was from that summit trip, and easily the most terrifying thing we've done this trip. After we came down from the mountain, we grabbed lunch and rented a motor boat and started cruising out onto the lake. We were having a blast and powered straight out into the center of the lake for about an hour. Riiiigghhht as we were getting to the center of the lake, a freak lightning storm rolled in. It started raining on us, and not the normal rain, but the kind of rain that feels like someone is throwing rocks at you. We started powering back to shore but we knew we were an hour out still. We started building forts with the towels that we had to protect from the rain and the spray of the chop. It was like in a movie as we're speeding back towards land while forks of lightning crack overhead and the wind is whipping so loud that no one can hear the other speak. Now we can officially say we've driven a boat to safety in the middle of a thunderstorm. Anyway, obviously we're okay, the boat stayed upright, nobody got electrocuted, we just got a little bit extremely wet. We'll call it the adventure of the trip. Next stop: Italy.
