I don't think I've seen anybody talk about how absolutely insane The Boiling Rock is from Hakoda's perspective.
Imagine getting captured, and your son tells you that you won't be apart for too long. That's sweet, but obviously your son has no resources to spare for organizing a breakout. You hope that the Avatar can defeat the Fire Lord soon - that's the earliest time you could hope to be rescued.
You get put into a temporary holding facility until the guards can sort out who is who. After a while, they put you on a prisoner transport to the Boiling Rock. Your captors try to intimidate you by telling you that it's the highest security prison in the Fire Nation, probably the whole world. It's far away from the capital.
You arrive at the Boiling Rock. It really is in the middle of a boiling lake. There's only one way in or out, and it's a gondola that takes you above the boiling lake. You meet the warden. They take you to your cell. You settle down to wait for the end of the war.
And 15 minutes later Sokka comes in like "hey dad I'm here I got the prince of the Fire Nation and an Earth Kingdom ninja leader gf ok let's go I'm busting you out"

something concerning i've noticed as of late in left leaning spaces is a propensity toward dehumanizing citizens of a country whose government is disagreeable (or at least perceived as such) ... ie russia israel palestine united states china yemen etc
which is... honestly really distressing? i've seen posts from a number of users on this site alone that demonstrate an inability (or perhaps just unwillingness) to simply understand the layman's experience in any one of the aforementioned countries ... because truly citizens have very little control over the actions of a government. which i'm kind of baffled that i have to say for it to be known
it tends to be a desire to characterize these groups of people some type of way - as all assholes, or genocidal, or stupid, or anything of the like. it dissociates you from other people. that exact rhetoric is a part of the pipeline that has been shown to lead to violence, both directly and indirectly. regardless of your political standing, your activism is immediately discredited when you focus on the individual and not the system.
let me be perfectly clear: this is a criticism of monochromatic thinking - at the moment i'm not trying to single out any one faction on the matter because i have Seen with my own two eyes this Exact thing go on at both ends. at best it would be hypocritical of me to point it out happening in only one of those spaces.
i think it's important to proceed with these discussions without hate. genuinely. blind anger and hatred what's poisoning all chances of finding solidarity, of finding a place to meet and just talk. and like... i understand the urge to say something cruel to someone who pisses you off or whose ideologies frustrate you. i think that's a universal thing to feel. but from a humanistic perspective, how are we supposed to incite and maintain long-term peace if what drives us to those goals is unfettered rage
i should also make it obvious, so this post doesn't reach the wrong crowd: i am avidly pro-palestine and pro-jew. if you believe those things are mutually exclusive, you have missed the point of this post by a mile.

Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria is such a weird theory because it's like there's a very obvious explanation for why middle school kids who didn't have dysphoria before might suddenly have dysphoria. Like huh weird I wonder what very obvious and widely known change that could cause kids to suddenly become very uncomfortable in their gender or sexual identity starts in between the ages of 10 and 14. Guess we'll never know. Must be peer pressure to *checks notes* become the only gender minority in your whole school singling you out for harassment by your peers. Couldn't be puberty suddenly giving you new body parts/bodily functions that are wrong for you.

”getting thicker skin” is great in theory but I think for some people “get better at handling your thin skin” is gonna be way more helpful advice. I have strong emotional reactions to criticism and they might never go away, but i can continue to try and handle each situation maturely and that’s the important part. Sometimes irrational feelings are chronic and living with them is better than trying to beat yourself up into not having them.
