the thing is the king charles portrait is genuinely incredible and exactly how I would execute a portrait of a member of the british royal family but also I literally cannot fathom why the british royal family would have it made

kinda wild how the vast majority of fishing historically has been done with nets and continues to be done with nets, and yet the popular depictions of fishing generally are a fishing rod. not even a spear or trap smh. but genuinely It's really interesting to think about that and the implied worldview etc. like fishing as an individual recreational activity instead of a way of sustaining life/populations.

remembering the time I called american psycho (a satirical film about toxic masculinity) a dark comedy and the overwhelming response was 'oh so u think men killing sex workers is funny? u think THAT'S funny?' like no I find a patrick batemen listening to 'i'm walking on sunshine', killing jared leto while wearing a clear raincoat and giving a dissertation on huey lewis n the news, using 'I need to return some video tapes' to get out of awkward situations, throwing a hissy fit about business cards, dropping a chainsaw down a flight of stairs, thinking an atm is telling him to feed it cats, and crying hysterically under a desk is funny. but thank u for ur wonderful insight

Absolutely not. I wanna be sympathetic or explain more or make a joke out of it but I honestly don't know how one even comes to that conclusion.
I mean the most basic test for what counts as a fruit or a vegetable is like, would it be more at home in a fruit cup or a garden salad. Like yeah you can have orange slices in salad or cucumber in a fruit cup most people will agree it has to be a *specific* kind of salad/fruit cup and not where you'd imagine first.
my Stardew Valley hot take is that I am 100% on Demetrius's side on the tomato debate. Robin asked him for fruit and he got tomatoes, which are a fruit. If she wanted a specific fruit, she should have specified. She could have even just said "ingredients for a fruit salad" and then he would know not to get tomatoes, but she didn't. She said fruit. He got fruit.

One of the most "I know people don't talk about this outside the very specific leftist circles I have found myself in" arguments I've had many times is about compulsory education and I just, I dunno I just saw a post that was tangentially related to it and it's still the most pure-ideology-over-practice things I've ever dealt with. Like the same person I had this fight with most also thought that the construction of all roads was evil but I can understand that as just, depression and despair disguised as anti-civ primitivist bullshit, so I extra shouldn't take it seriously but still.
We agree a society with universal experiences is good, yes? Commonalities in forms of communication makes communicating in large groups easier? Communal child-rearing is preferable to atomized family units? That language is only easily imparted for a brief window in early childhood? That while children are still humans with rights that they are also still children and cannot actually be fully responsible for themselves?
Then congratulations my friend we're in full agreement we've just reinvented primary school but without grades. The laundry list of problems with public education as it is is bad enough to justify tearing it down and starting over but a lot of people get so far into the problems part that they just think it's undoable, and if they want to take anything good from the very IDEA of "hey maybe we should teach kids some shit" they have to fold themselves in half to call it anything but education.

(girl with adhd voice) yeah i just love in fiction when a character has a superpower thats also a disability. like a power that changes how they interact with the world in exciting ways but also has terrible drawbacks to their daily life. no real reason why

I wish my perception of christianity as merely a fringe genocidal doomsday cult was actually real. instead it's a genocidal doomsday cult with global dominance and centuries of colonial violence waged in its name

I don't know Stardew Valley so I don't know the exact situation here but I'm still gonna call bullshit. The fact this ONLY ever happens with tomatoes means that the guy giving tomatoes did it on purpose to get uppity about specific definitions.
Like you never hear "Oh well TECHNICALLY squash/cucumber/peppers/eggplants are fruit and you just asked for a fruit." People are aware of the annoying Is Tomato A Vegetable question to the extent you can't claim ignorance of what someone means when they say "I need some fruit."
It's like saying you're making ravioli for dinner and then serving poptarts. The only way you get to that conclusion is by already knowing about the inane debate because the the common usage is very much not in question.

Another just, wild thing about voting discourse especially from the blue-no-matter-who crowd is that Biden HAS actually done some things that are GOOD AND COOL that have gotten exactly zero radio play because his campaign is afraid of looking too good and cool to court the mythical centrist republican they're trying to win over, so like
There IS actually an affirmative case for Biden! It's way too little for the current era but it's still *there*, and the fact the people who scream at you to vote for him the most can still only manage to muster of "It'd be worse if it were Trump!" shows better than anything that they're not politically engaged. That's an even more sportsball Go Our Team mindset than if Biden had done literally nothing positive at all.

Of all the things that piss me off about that kind of person, the fact they'll all outright refuse to acknowledge that like, MAYBE 15% of the country actually gets to vote for president is my least favorite. Like oh no I'm gonna convince my 4 friends who were still planning on voting Biden not to vote for him in NORTH DAKOTA how will he ever win now. There is zero actual moral v practical debate to be had for most usamericans if you want me to stop shit-talking Biden get Biden to stop being so shit-talkable.
I think the most annoying thing about really strident "vote blue no matter who" posters is that they seem incapable of understanding the difference between A Call To Action and a personal statement of frustration and disaffection
