What’s abstraction good for? Describe some of the reasons why artists might employ abstraction in their work.
- Abstraction is mostly used for trying to not have a single definition. It’s hard to explain but when you want to maybe describe a feeling or event, with abstraction you don’t have to make art of it in a concrete way where it’s in your face but it can go into many different meaning when looked at.
What does having a physical space to make art mean for your process and how do you make your space work for you?
- It is very important where I make my art. Usually I make art at home because it is where I am most comfortable but it can also be distracting, especially when I’m in bed in my most relaxed state. But when I work at my desk I have my laptop set up with music or podcasts playing while I draw with my iPad.

LIFE COLOR POST #14
1. This week is orange week and I stumbled upon this photo of honey desserts and it reminds of that orange does remind me of honey. A buttery and super sweet feeling.
2. This is a pizza with unique toppings and the oranges really stand out from the white of the cheese.
3. This is such a simple set up of a cake and coffee art. However the oranges really stand out and tells that this is a orange themed dessert. It gives kind of a sour feeling since oranges can be sour too.

How does the location or context of a work of art affect its meaning?
- It can definitely affect the work of art, it always depends of the context. Maybe a location means a lot to the artist or the context of the art piece is of the artist’s state of mind or event in their life that is affecting them. The meaning of an art piece can be complicated and knowing the artist, what the art piece is about, and the context behind it can easily affect the art piece itself.
Are there any particular activities that you do everyday as an artist?
- I usually try to brainstorm ideas on what to draw and write them down in my notes. I try to draw everyday or sketch to be able to improve myself. Or I look at artists on twitter and try to find inspiration from them.

LIFE COLOR POST #13
1. Since it’s gray week I thought of an amazing character design which is Cliff Unger from Death Stranding. Black and grey are his dominant colors and it gives him a mellow, mysterious, terrifying aura.
2. This cake has such low saturated colors and tones but it’s a nice touch since I’ve seen highly saturated cakes that don’t look so good.
3. This cute Totoro teacup has such a quaint and delicate look to it. The soft greens blend in so well with the grey purple of Totoro.

What do you do to keep yourself motivated and interested in your work?
- I always experience burnout at times and to keep me motivated I just...not draw. I take some time to myself and sometime down the line I’ll get my motivation back. At the same time I really wish I can draw 24/7 but I know it’s impossible. I don’t wish to overwork myself.
Can art provoke change or transform our way of thinking? How?
- Of course. Art can bring out someone’s imaginations and thinking to the world and people could be moved by that. For example, maybe seeing art depicting historical events can educate people on what happened at the times.

COLOR THEORY HISTORY REFLECTION
I never really noticed how color can be so simple and yet so complicated at the same time. Color can be heard or seen as imaginary and is a trick of the light. There was an old method that I’ve heard of where use get a triangle glass prism to have sun light pass through and bend through it to make an array of colors. They were used as experimental objects said Newton and I found that fascinating. I didn’t know Isaac Newton was the one who created this method though. The second video there was a segment where colors can achieve a different emotion and noise. For example they showed a yellow square, then they got a word with the same color as that yellow and put it in a purple square, making it “louder.” With a different background, colors can take on different meanings and value. I also found it cool that staring at a green square for 30 seconds, then the square disappearing and you see the green in that square.

1. These little kiwi cake sandwiches are so cute and the colors are so simple. It’s only brown, green, and white yet they come together so smoothly.
2. These cakes have kind of aesthetic pastel icing on top and gives off calm and fun looking pastries.
3. The reds stand out so much and it gives off such a sweet vibe and the white cream surrounding it accentuates it.

How have the tools and materials of artists changed over time?
- The tools and materials have changed drastically over time, especially when it comes to digital art since the advance in technology. Tools such as paints, watercolor, pencil is massively produced today also with the surge of supplies compared to the past where it was hard to get the right materials.
What impacts do you think commercialism and the media have had on your work? Is this good or bad?
- Media has made such a huge impact on my art. Since I wish to be a freelance artist, I use social media to spread around my art and it’s been giving me a big following and meet so many amazing artists. It can also be bad though since I’ve received negative comments and been harassed by people. But if you block and mute the right people, it’s not that bad.

1. I found this photo of a grassy field and everything looks so ethereal or like in a disney movie. The greens make it emit a calm and natural atmosphere.
2. These are sunflowers that are resting in the corner of the art studio. It gives life to at least a part of the room and it stands out when leaning against the gray like walls.
3. Desserts are my favorite things and this matcha cupcake and cake looks delicious. The greens already give it out that the flavor has to do with tea. And it looks like it has an herbal feel to it with the lowly saturated greens.

What role does art play in our society? What role does art play in the church?
- Art plays as a visualization for our society, something that needs to put out from people’s imaginations and minds. It adds the art of creativity to our society. Art plays a huge role for the church, it provides visuals of the Bible and helps people see what happened in a more creative way. Examples like stained glass windows, paintings of Bible characters, and graphic designs of church visuals and events.
How do you want people to remember your work?
- I wish for people to remember the coloring and stylization of my work. I use a certain technique to color my art and I hope people like how I use aesthetic colors for my art. I don’t really wish for my art to make a huge impact on people’s lives but I do wish for it to make people see it and be like “Yes, that’s Sharon’s art.”
