What an exciting parcel arrived yesterday evening...ARCUS Project amazing kindness and support in a box from Japan! What an honour it was to be a resident artist with ARCUS Project, to become intertwined into their international fabric- especially to have worked alongside Eduardo Cachucho &Anggawan Kusno and made friends with Seyitt Battal Kurt been advised by Shihoko Lida and the incrediable ARCUS coordinators Ryota Tomoshige, Mizuho Ishii & Yumiko Fujimoto
We managed to fit in some super quick filming in the morning, which was a good distraction, and nice to do something together we are good at, making a film.
Ben then took a well earned nap in the sun at Moriya train station.
The train journey to the airport felt strange and distilled, like time had become so fast like sand slipping through fingers, yet at the same time it was so poised and distinct.
We realised we had lots of extra time, so we stopped off in a nowhere place, to spend this strange time together. We filled it with drinking two beers, in a strange bar. I felt uncomfortable inside, so we sat in the freezing cold outside.
and then Ben was gone.
I always find the time someone walks through the security, very strange. As you know that you are both in the same building, yet you are unable to be together.
I returned back to Moriya, to try and finish what I had started. Luckily, time was going to be very busy, and very quickly I had to start thinking and planning; and I was returning to somewhere I had started to love. This made saying goodbye a little smoother.
It seemed to me that Ben has taken very kindly to different elements of the Japanese culture, especially Rinpa paintings, Asahi beer, Japanese Anime and of course his Yukata sleep wear.
Tsukuba Science City represents one of the world's largest coordinated attempts to accelerate the rate of and improve the quality of scientific discovery - therefore it hosts as well as research labs, it hosts many museums. So we checked out the Robotic and Geographic museum. The robotic was sadly a bit disappointing/ dated but we were pleasantly entertained in the geographic museum. I forgot how interesting geography is, and the fun graphical language that comes with it.
Following the mad rush of Halloween in Tokyo, we needed some time with nature. So we took our bikes and went for a nice cycle along the river. After this, we cycled to WonderRex, which is a top class second hand clothes store in Moriya. Ben got kitted out with three new pairs of trousers, a new jacket, new shoes and three Kimonos. Being the size we are, Japanese clothes fit both Ben and I very well. Following Ben’s shopping spree, we went to have dinner in this delicious Yakatori restaurant. It was such a nice evening.
I had started to feel a little sad as I knew Ben would be going soon, and everything had felt so different whilst he had been out in Japan with me.
We shared a delicious and beautiful cake in the ARCUS Project office.
It was more crazy than I expected, in the insane amount of people filling the streets like it was a metro in rush hour, dressed in full detailed costumes, drinking like the world was ending. The contrast to the streets of Tokyo that I had become acquainted to, was fascinating.
We began by finding somewhere up hight to have dinner together, then we left and went to a small club, where we had a good dance. We then made the bad descision of leaving with no plan and simply ended up joining the street drunken parade.
We went into a FamilyMart, all the shelves were stripped bare, rubbish all over the floor, people playing music on their phones and cheering. It really was so interesting how opposite people were behaving, like the alter egos all came out for one night.
Ben and I got to work on planning out what to produce for the Open Studios, which is looming very close. I took Ben to Joyful Honda, where we looked at one different materials of interest. We found an ARCUS Project poster on the cashier desk.
Ben was quite taken aback by seeing this young dog in her nappy in Joyful Honda, so I thought I would include it.
Akari very kindly let agreed to me painting her feet black, so that I could compare her footprint patterns to mine.
Today Tero, who is one of the supporters for ARCUS Project, joined Ben in some impromptu workshops. I asked them to think about their movement, and then think about a woman’s movement and to try and move like a woman.
I then Asked Tero to try and use his skills of observation, by watching a lady around the same age, and copying her way of sitting and expressions on the bench outside. After doing so I engaged Tero into conversation of what he thought the woman was thinking, and what he could understand from her body language. After this, he went on to explain the similarities and differences he would feel if he were a woman.
