Today on Curse of Strahd

A new party member was introduced a few sessions ago. She's an adventurer who fought Strahd and lost. For the hell of it, he tried to restore her to life with mad science, and it worked. The party found her in Strahd's laboratory, immediately after she woke up.

Thing is, she didn't have any of her gear. Strahd gave her a set of his fine clothes (which another party member tailored to fit her), but she had no weapons. She was also missing the uncommon magic item I allowed her to choose at character creation - Eyes of Minute Seeing.

The party later met Cyrus Belview, who lives in the basement and loots cool stuff off dead adventurers. He had the elf's boots and her battleaxe, but not the lenses. (Although, now that he knows that's a thing, he'll be checking dead bodies for contact lenses going forward.)

The party returns to Strahd to ask him about them.

Artificer: Do you know what contact lenses are? Crystal lenses that touch your eyes? The elf had some when she died and she wants them back.

Strahd: Oh... you want those back, huh?

Artificer: If you want a set of your own, I can make you a pair if you give us the elf's pair.

Strahd: OK, deal. Give me a second to take them off. *walks through the wall into the bathroom*

I've seen a lot of self-identified leftists fully miss the connection between embracing a worldview that everything is getting worse and the world is going to shit and like. right-wing populism.

While you are learning about the world it can feel like things are getting worse as your understanding of reality and history becomes more sophisticated.  And I'm not saying to ignore anything bad. Obviously policies, wars, and political changes can make things worse in the short term.

But a conceptualization of the world as “getting worse in general" requires that things were “better” in some (real or imagined) past. And once you're there, you're hurtling toward conservatism. You’re not a leftist if you think things should go back to the way they were before it all got screwed up, if you're rejecting modernity and embracing tradition. You’re not even a Democrat.

Despair is extremely enticing, but there is no “before.” There was no time when the economy was good and laws were just and everyone had a home and everyone was safe.

Notes:

Traditional art is allowed! I do traditional every year, and use my phone camera to photograph the drawings for posting (usually with a bit of editing as well).

You don't have to be good! You don't even have to put a lot of effort in. Just DON'T change OCs designs (unless the person says redesigns are allowed) and rate your attacks appropriately for the level of effort.

For example, you can draw a small doodle or sketch and submit that, it will just be worth fewer points.

What’s art fight??

I was hoping I’d get an ask like this so I had an excuse to go all out like this! Artfight is an annual art event that surrounds giving and getting art for a whole month!

once you make an account you can upload all your ocs and their information on your own page! This should include stuff like references and small bits of character info (enough for someone to draw them accurately). You need to have at least one OC uploaded to participate so people can draw art for you during Artfight (although i would say upload about 3 so people have choice.)

All people who sign up for Artfight that year get separated into two teams once the event begins (I’m using red and blue as an example but they are usually stuff like sun vs moon, technology vs nature, coffee vs tea etc)

Once that happens people can make art of your OCs in exchange for points for their team! Yep! You get free art of your OCs!

But that means your team is now down a good few points so its not without consequence.

By drawing an OC that belongs to the opposite team for more points than the piece you were given your team is able to stay on top of the game and you also put some good out in the world in the process.

if you draw something for the person of the opposite team and they attack back you can get extra points for your team by starting a “revenge chain” its one of the best ways to get a point multiplier going and to start a friendship with someone who has cool characters!

So what happens when your team wins?

Your team all get a nifty little digital trophy, all the art development that comes with drawing competitively, the knowledge that you’ve put a lot of good and happiness into the world by drawing peoples ocs, and complete ownership of bragging rights! (I personally developed my art style a whole lot during artfight last year! it was super fun!)

So what about when your team looses?

Well the reason why the other team won is because they gave your team the most art of your teams characters! So statistically you just got a whole bunch more free art than they did! Even if you don’t get all the celebration and bragging rights you now have so much more amazing art of your characters!
