If thereâs one college assignment I had to do which I could force on all college students, itâd be this paper I had to write for a Research Methods class. It was later in the semester, and the professor gave us a very straightforward assignment: you need to find a news article which reports on the results of an academic study, read the actual study, and then explain in detail why the article did not properly represent the studyâs findings.
Not only was having to do that a really useful exercise in terms of figuring out how misinformation gets passed around, but talking with a class of 25 other students who all had to do the same thing for 25 different articles makes you realize that the majority of all âstudies showâŚâ news articles misrepresent the studies theyâre based on

Things I learnt now that Iâm out of high school
sure someone might have a better educational background or family background, but what really matters when interacting with people is your personality and attitude
If there is something that you donât like about yourself, admit it, accept it, and change it. Changing something about yourself doesnât mean you are loving yourself less, in fact you are loving yourself more
Respect others until they prove they do not deserve it. But sometimes for the sake of your future self, doesnât disrespect them. Just because they donât deserve your respect doesnât mean you have to disrespect them or be mean to them. They are humans with mistakes too
Itâs fine to not date in high school. Sometimes weâre just not ready. And the people we were might not have been ready to treat others the way they deserve to be.
Mental health is important. period.
HEALTH IS IMPORTANT PERIOD
If your back hurts do some yoga. If you need to de-stress do some yoga. Yoga calmed me before I did anything without a clear mind. 100% recommend anyone to try it out once
Take pictures. With you in them. Yes, you might cringe but youâll regret not having photos with your friends. Especially nice ones if all you have are funny meme ones
Learn to text, youâll need this skill when everyone is gone
Itâs never too late to apologize
If you are disorganized I beg you to start organizing your stuff now, itâs not because I told you so or because your mum wants you to, itâs because your future self will thank you
Do everything with your future self in mind
Learn a few recipes even if you are terrible at cooking. Practice and master those recipes. Theyâll feed you and youâll have staples to bring to gatherings if needed (then slowly work from there and learn more recipes)
Yes school matters but itâs actually all about how you use the resources available to you
Start experimenting and find out what study techniques are for you. Grades seem much more important in uni than that quiz where you can cover up with extra credit
DO EXTRA CREDIT IF THERE IS AND IF YOU CAN
Learn to and always say no when you canât. Thereâs a difference between being uncomfortable to go outside of your comfort zone and being uncomfortable while trying to swallow a panic attack
Learn about yourself. You are not boring. The inside world means as much as the outside world. If you see nothing, build something. try and see what you like or dislike.

How to Really Comprehend a Scientific Paper
**credit to my research advisor, sheâs an amazing mentor and I aspire to be just like her someday :)
Read the abstract. Write down what the paper says it is going to be about.
Read the introduction. Write down what the paper says it is looking to accomplish and how.
Read the conclusion. Write down what the paper actually did accomplish.
Go through and find all the pictures, graphs, or diagrams. Write notes explaining these images to yourself.
Read the whole paper start to finish. Write a summary of the paper as though you are explaining it to a layperson, and then another summary as though you are explaining it to a colleague.
Throughout all of the above steps:
If there are words you donât know google them and write down the definitions
If the paper defines a formula, law, variable, etc in a certain way write that down
If there are references to or recommendations of other literature write those down. After the last step if thereâs anything youâre uncertain about or would like more information on look to that list for further reading

Could I just say something real quick?Â
Itâs all coming. Whatever youâre starving for, whatever that ache is that stings your bones, itâs coming. The love, the happiness, the adventures, and the creativity that you are seeking, it is all coming for you. Hereâs the thing, donât let your right now get away. The things you find mundane, keep them. Store them in the pocket of your favorite coat like found pennies. They arenât futile. Do not let them cause you to feel empty and hollow. They are going to be worthwhile. Keep the hunger for what is coming, but please, keep a tight grip on these little ordinary moments that are happening right now, because they â these tiny pieces of this ordinary affair you find yourself in â are the foundation to your extraordinary. And I promise you, if you begin to recognize your right now, youâll see your extraordinary coming. Â
