EPILOGUE
Three months later
Alec stood in front of the long mirror in Magnus’ closet. He was wearing a black suit Magnus had bought him and was trying to figure out how to tie the tie properly.
“Let me,” Magnus said as he wrapped his arms around him, expertly tying Alec’s tie.
“Thanks,” Alec mumbled, turning around as soon as it was done to kiss his boyfriend.
Magnus ran a hand through Alec’s hair, scratching lightly at his scalp.
“Are you okay?”
Alec hummed, “I’m nervous.”
Magnus pulled him into a hug, holding him tightly. “You’ll be brilliant.”
A few weeks after they’d first slept together, Magnus had approached Alec with an idea. Magnus’s law firm had several branches scattered around the city and the branch that was run by his friend Catarina was looking for a new hire. Magnus had thought of Alec since he’d mentioned having a law degree. Alec had hesitated, not wanting to get a job simply because he knew Magnus. After reassurance that he’d have to apply like anyone else and that Catarina wouldn’t let their connection interfere with her decision, Alec decided to apply.
He didn’t think he’d get the job considering he’d never done anything related to law since he graduated, having chosen to keep working with Lydia. He was aware that if he’d tried to get a job as a lawyer then he would have had a higher income but he was afraid of not getting anything and ending up with nothing. So he stayed where he was safe, where he knew there would be another paycheck coming in. The salary at the coffee shop was rather good which was also one of the reasons he was reluctant to leave.
Lydia had told him to give this new position a shot and he’d been surprised when Catarina had called to offer him the job. She’d been impressed with him during the interview but mainly by the way he’d solved the issue she’d given the candidates. She’d wanted to see how they’d handle a tricky case so she’d given them a problem to solve. Everyone had done it differently but she’d preferred Alec’s. After meeting in her office to discuss the job in more detail, Alec decided to take it. Magnus had been so proud and they’d had an intense round of celebratory sex. Isabelle and Jace had been ecstatic when he told them about the job. They’d both wanted him to go into a job like that since he’d worked hard for his degree.
And now here he was, standing in Maguns’s closet on what was going to be his first day. Magnus had checked the policy to make sure that they weren’t breaking any rules by dating. Since they were working in different departments and branches, they were all good.
“Are you ready?” Magnus asked, pulling back to look at his boyfriend.
Alec nodded. “Yeah.”
Magnus kissed him softly before leading him out of the loft and to a little cafe for breakfast. They talked and laughed, sharing the moment and calming Alec’s nerves. Eventually, it was time to go and Magnus squeezed Alec’s hand reassuringly.
“You’ve got this, darling. Have a good day, I love you.”
Alec pressed a quick kiss to Magnus’s lips. “I love you, too.”
They headed off to their respective buildings. Alec met with Catarina who showed him around before leading him to his desk. A few files were waiting for him and Alec couldn’t wait to get started. It was only after he’d settled in, ready to work when he found a message from Magnus waiting on the messaging system.
Magnus: You still own me that picture 😏😏

CHAPTER ELEVEN
Over the months, Alec and Magnus got closer and closer. They’d make sure they had dates once a week and would keep in contact via text message all the time. Magnus’s visits to the coffee shop had decreased in favour of Alec just taking his coffee to the office during his break. On those occasions, it usually ended with a make-out session and Alec being back late after his break. Lydia would just roll her eyes at him. The first time it had happened Alec had tried to claim that traffic had made him late until Lydia pointed out that he had walked and that there was a fresh hickey on his neck.
Luckily for Alec, his siblings seemed to have lost interest enough to stop randomly turning up in his apartment. They had an annoying habit of letting themselves in while he was out with Magnus and waiting for him to get home. Alec refused to bring Magnus up simply because a part of him knew they would be lurking.
“Why don’t you ever invite Magnus upstairs?” Isabelle asked over coffee one day.
He’d met up with his siblings on his day off to discuss boundaries and just to check in with them after their finals.
“Because you tend to be there,” Alec replied, raising an eyebrow at his sister.
“Don’t you want us to meet him?”
Alec blinked at her. “You already know him. You were on speaking terms with him before I was. Hell, you went on a shopping trip together last week.”
Isabelle looked like she wanted to say something but stopped. Alec thought she would drop the subject but alas he wasn’t that lucky.
“What about having him meet Jace?”
“Because Jace is a menace.”
Jace let out an offended huff before joining the conversation. “I am not. Clearly, with that attitude, you don’t get laid enough, Alec.”
Alec looked at Isabelle with a see what I mean expression on his face. Isabelle just shook her head before looking at her brother and Alec just knew he wasn’t going to like the next question she asked.
“Why haven’t you and Magnus…” she trailed off, and Alec was thankful that she didn’t finish the sentence.
“Fucked,” Jace finished for her, making Alec ponder what life would have been like if his parents hadn’t adopted the blond idiot.
“I just…” Alec wasn’t entirely sure he wanted to admit his fear to his siblings. Isabelle placed her hand on his and he added quietly. “I’m scared.”
“Of?” Isabelle prompted, shooting daggers at Jace in case he chose to say something stupid.
Alec stayed quiet for a moment before admitting his feelings to his siblings. They’d always been there for each other and if there was anyone who would not make fun of him for this, it was them.
“Of not being enough. Of being too mundane. Of losing him.”
Alec hadn’t expected both of his siblings to suddenly get up and hug him, but he appreciated it nonetheless. He hugged them back tightly, the tension draining out of his body a little bit as they returned to their seats.
“Alec,” Isabelle started, and Alec really wasn’t sure if he wanted to hear what she was going to say. “This thing with Magnus has been going on for a while. If he wasn’t serious he’d have left by now.”
Alec just nodded. Realistically, he knew that, but that didn’t stop him from thinking that Magnus could do so much better than someone like him.
“You should tell him you love him,” Jace said, making Alec’s head whip around so fast it was a wonder he didn’t break his neck.
“What?”
“Dude, you are so in love with him it’s frankly nauseating.”
Alec just blinked at him. Was he in love with Magnus? Sure, he liked spending time with him. Whenever he saw the man or received a message or a call he couldn’t stop smiling. Being around Magnus made him feel safe and his heartbeat would pick up when he saw him smile. He’d imagine a future with him a few times and what it would be like to grow old together. Just the thought of losing Magnus was enough to bring tears to his eyes and tightness to his chest. Alec froze, his eyes widening slightly.
He was in love with Magnus.
Isabelle chuckled next to him and she pressed a soft kiss to his cheek. “We’ll let you think about that,” she said quietly.
Just as she and Jace were about to leave, Alec turned to them.
“How did you know?” Alec asked, eyes locked onto Jace.
Jace smiled at him and it was in these moments that he was glad to have Jace as his brother. “It’s so obvious in the way you look at him. And yes, it is that obvious all the way from your kitchen window. And, Alec, he looks at you the same way.”
Alec nodded as if on instinct, turning back to his coffee to think.
***
On their next date, Alec was a nervous mess. Jace’s comment had lingered in his head for days and he wasn’t sure if he was ready to deal with it. Though, the moment he saw Magnus waiting for him with his bike all the anxiety melted away.
“Hey,” Magnus said, walking over to kiss Alec.
Alec hummed into the kiss, pulling his boyfriend a little closer. “Hi.”
Magnus handed him his helmet and they headed off to dinner.
Magnus, Alec had come to realise, had a knack for finding cute little restaurants for them to go to. They were always the perfect amount of classy and romantic without being over the top. The only issue Alec had during their date was that he kept getting distracted by how good Magnus looked. The man had rolled his shirt sleeves up again and Alec’s heart was doing flips in his chest. The man looked sexy as hell and now that Alec’s feelings had been pointed out to him, he wanted Magnus more than before. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with him and get to see him dressed in the same way all the time. Magnus seemed to have caught on to Alec’s turmoil as he would smirk and push the sleeves back up when they started to roll down.
They talked about their days and how things had been going with the new intern at Magnus’s firm. When it was time to leave, Alec slipped his hand easily into Magnus and the feeling that they fit together so perfectly made the tips of his ears turn red.
“Oh,” Alec stated, looking up at the sky as they walked outside.
Sometime during their dinner, it had started raining and it was coming down quite hard now. They stood under the canape for a moment, watching the rain fall before Magnus turned to Alec.
“Would you like to come back to my place? It’s closer so we won’t get too wet.”
“I’d like that.”
Magnus smiled and they ran towards his bike, laughing as they did. The journey to Magnus’s was quick but they were still soaked to the bone by the time they arrived.
Alec removed his shoes and jacket in the entranceway as he didn’t want to walk through Magnus’s home with wet shoes.
“I suggest you take a warm shower before you catch a cold,” Magnus suggested. “I can lend you some clothes and I’ll make some tea.”
Alec nodded, his teeth beginning to chatter with how cold he felt. Magnus led him through to the ensuite, before disappearing into the closet. He returned with some clothes and a fluffy towel. He handed it all to Alec before leaving him to shower while he made the tea.
Once Alec was done, Magnus handed him his mug before heading off to shower himself. Alec smiled into the hot tea, knowing that Magnus had waited for the shower to stop running before making it. He’d been given free rein over the loft and he wandered around admiring the space. It was an open area with doors branching off. Alec didn’t exactly plan to go snooping so he just settled onto the couch to enjoy his tea.
Alec was starting to doze off when he heard the sound of footsteps. He looked up and his jaw dropped at the sight. Magnus was walking around the couch wearing nothing but a pair of grey sweatpants. Alec’s eyes trailed down Magnus’s body, the image of the last time he’d seen those abs flashing in his mind. He swallowed around a lump in his throat as his eyes went back to Magnus’s.
“Like what you see?” Magnus teased.
Alec just nodded, not trusting his voice. Magnus smirked and flopped down onto the couch next to Alec. Magnus went to strike up a conversation but before he could, Alec pulled him into a kiss. Magnus shifted closer, creating a better angle so they could deepen the kiss. They kissed for a while, Alec’s hand sliding over Magnus’s chest, moaning at the feeling of his abs.
“Darling,” Magus panted, breaking the kiss to mouth at Alec’s neck. “If you want to take this further, we should move to the bedroom.”
“Okay.”
Magnus dragged Alec to his feet and into a kiss. Magnus guided him into the bedroom, kicking the door shut behind him. They collapsed onto the bed in a tangle of limbs as they kissed each other like this was their only chance. Alec was the one to break the kiss this time, mouthing down Magnus’ throat. He sucked a mark onto Magnus’s collarbone before making his way further down. Alec hummed happily as he traced his tongue and teeth along the ridges of Magnus’s abs. They were perfect and Alec wanted to mark them, wanted to leave his claim on the man he’d fallen in love with.
After he’d kissed and nipped at every muscle and every crevice of those wonderful abs, he made his way back up to Magnus’s lips. They kissed hungrily, Alec’s shirt being removed in the process. He moaned when Magnus flipped them, looking down at Alec like he wanted to devour him.
“How far do you want to go?” Magnus asked, his voice soft as he brushed hair out of Alec’s face.
“I want you,” Alec replied, grinding his hips against Magnus’s to prove his point.
“What do you want, Alexander?” Magnus repeated, stealing a quick kiss, “How much do you want?”
When the questions Magnus was asking registered, a blush formed on Alec’s face that ran down his throat. Magnus had the urge to trace it with his tongue.
“Oh,” Alec said, looking everywhere but at Magnus. “I … erm…”
“Look at me,” Magnus said softly, turning Alec’s head. He kissed him again in reassurance. “We don’t have to do anything if you’re not ready.”
Alec’s heart fluttered in his chest and he had to bite back the I love you that wanted to come out. He took a moment to gather himself before wrapping his arms around Magnus’s neck.
“I want to feel you inside me,” he whispered, the blush darkening.
Magnus groaned and claimed Alec’s lips in a passionate kiss. The tension and anticipation built as they kissed and stripped each other of their clothes. Magnus kissed down Alec’s body, leaving marks as he did, so he could take Alec into his mouth. Alec moaned, his head thrown back in pleasure. He tensed slightly when he felt Magnus’s lubed finger at his entrance. Alec had no idea when the man had grabbed the lube but the warmth of Magnus’s mouth was helping him relax against the intrusion.
Alec hadn’t enjoyed the sensation of his own fingers but Magnus’s were incredible. Magnus took his time to carefully open Alec up, only adding another finger when Alec was practically begging. Only once he was a squirming moaning mess did Magnus pull his fingers out and sit back, Alec’s cock falling from his mouth. He rolled on a condom, lubed up his cock and placed it at Alec’s entrance.
“Ready?”
“Please.”
Magnus kissed him as he pushed in, trying to distract Alec from the discomfort of the initial intrusion. By the time he bottomed out, Alec was panting. Alec clung to Magnus tightly as he adjusted. He’d never felt so full in his life.
“Move,” he whimpered, “please.”
Magnus started rocking his hips gently, gradually gaining speed and force. Alec rocked back to meet his thrust and he’d never felt this much pleasure before. He knew he was letting out embarrassing sounds but he couldn’t bring himself to care. Not when Magnus was looking at him like he was the most precious thing in the world and pounding into his prostate.
Much too soon in Alec’s opinion, his orgasm hit him and he came, Magnus’s name leaving his lips with a loud moan. It took a couple more thrusts for Magnus to join him, Alec’s name muffled where he’d buried his face in Alec’s neck.
They came down from their highs and Magnus rolled off of him, discarding the condom before pulling Alec into his arms. He kissed his head softly, and the two of them lay there in silence, enjoying the afterglow. Alec tilted his head up to look at Magnus just as the man did the same thing. They stared at each other for a moment before their lips met in a soft sweet kiss. They continued to trade kisses until they became a bit chilly from the cooling sweat. Magnus dragged a happily giggling Alec into the shower to clean off, gently washing each other. Magnus handed him a pair of sweats before he quickly changed the sheets. As soon as he was done the pair curled up together, Alec’s head resting on Magnus’ chest.
“I love you, Alexander,” Magnus whispered.
Alec looked up at him, lifting himself up so he could look Magnus in the eye. The amount of love shining in them took his breath away. He leaned down to kiss him again before pulling back with a grin.
“I love you, Magnus.”
Magnus beamed and pulled Alec down into a deep passionate kiss. When they broke apart, their faces radiated just how happy and in love they were. Alec pressed a soft kiss to Magnus’s lips before settling back down.
“Good night, Alexander,” Magnus said, kissing his head and tightening his hold on Alec, pulling him even closer to him.
“Good night, Magnus,” Alec replied, pressing a kiss over Magnus’s heart.
Alec fell asleep with a smile on his face, safe and sound wrapped in the arms of the man he loved.

CHAPTER TEN
Alec really didn’t know what to wear for the date. It had been so long since he’d been on one that he wasn’t sure what he should be doing. He’d had to call in his sister for help and Jace had come along with her because, apparently, Alec's love life was fascinating to both of his siblings.
“What did Magnus say you would be doing?” Isabelle asked, rummaging through Alec’s wardrobe.
“Nothing. He didn’t tell me anything other than to dress casually.”
“Casual casual or smart casual?” Isabelle inquired, turning to look at him.
Alec blinked at her and then looked over at Jace, who for some reason was sitting on his bed eating popcorn. Alec made a mental note to check into his brother’s well-being.
“There’s a difference?”
Isabelle made an exasperated noise and proceeded to grab her brother’s phone and check the messages herself despite Alec’s protests.
“Izzy!”
“What?”
“Are there any dick pics?” Jace asked around a mouth full of popcorn. “Or any form of sexting?”
“Why are you even here?” Alec asked, as Isabelle rolled her eyes and went back to the wardrobe muttering about Alec’s lack of fashion sense.
“Entertainment,” Jace replied with a grin and Alec was filled with the overwhelming urge to hit him.
He took a deep breath and turned back to his sister as she thrust clothes in his direction.
“Try this on.”
Alec was about to argue but she just looked at him and he groaned, walking into the bathroom to change. He had to admit that the black slacks and light grey shirt look decent. He returned to the bedroom and Isabelle grinned at him.
“Perfect,” she stated, making her way over to him so she could fuss with his hair.
“You look good,” Jace piped up while Alec tried to swat his sister’s hands away. “You will most definitely get laid.”
Alec spluttered and Isabelle turned to glare at their brother.
“Jace, that’s not the point of this outfit. The point is to leave Magnus wanting but not actually getting.”
Jace nodded and Alec just looked between the two completely lost. He decided he’d prefer not to know what they were on about and instead headed into the living room. It was almost time for Magnus to pick him up and Alec was nervous. He began pacing the room, attracting the attention of his annoying siblings.
“It’s going to be okay,” Isabelle said softly.
Alec just looked at her. “What if after all this, he doesn’t really like me?” he stated. “It wouldn’t be the first time.”
“True, but you didn’t really like that guy. You like Magnus and he likes you a lot more than that dickhead did,” Jace stated, still holding his bowl of popcorn.
Alec hummed, “Yeah, but that just means if this goes wrong it’ll hurt a lot more.”
“Alec,” Isabelle whispered softly. “It’s not going to go wrong.”
“And no matter what, we’ll be here,” Jace added.
“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Alec mumbled, accepting the hug Isabelle gave him.
He kissed the top of her head as the buzzer sounded. He took a deep breath before walking to the intercom, Magnus’s voice coming through the system.
“I’m here, Alexander.”
Alec couldn’t stop the smile from spreading over his face. “I’ll be right down.”
He quickly put on his shoes and as he went to grab a jacket, Isabelle’s voice reached his ears.
“Take the leather jacket.”
Alec grabbed it and pulled it on, catching a glance at his reflection in the hallway mirror. He nodded and grabbed his keys and wallet but paused just as he was about to leave, turning to his siblings who were watching him.
“I don’t want either of you to be here when I get home.”
And with that, he turned and left the apartment. Alec’s hands began to shake slightly as he watched the numbers of the elevator count down to the ground floor. He walked out the doors of the building and froze. Magnus was waiting for him, leaning against his bike. The man was wearing fitted dark grey trousers with a velvet red shirt tucked in that accentuated his chest. But what had really got Alec’s attention was that Magnus had rolled the sleeves up to his elbows. He looked like sex on legs and Alec could feel lust bubbling up inside him. He’d never seen anyone look so incredibly sexy.
“Why thank you, darling, you’re not so bad yourself,” Magnus said, his tone light as he held out a spare helmet to Alec.
Alec flushed a deep shade of red as he realised he’d spoken out loud but walked forward and took the helmet anyway.
“Sorry, I didn’t buzz you inside. My siblings are upstairs and I’d rather they didn’t chase you away with an interrogation.”
Magnus chuckled. “They wouldn’t be able to get rid of me that easily, Alexander.”
Alec smiled and his heart leaped happily in his chest. He let Magnus help him with the helmet before climbing onto the back of the bike.
“Keep a tight hold on me,” Magnus said as he climbed on.
“Is that why you brought the bike?” Alec teased, wrapping his arms around the man’s waist.
“Maybe. Or maybe I wanted to see how good you were at riding."
Alec’s indignant squeak at the statement was covered up by the sound of the bike’s engine as they set off.
The date was lovely. They ate dinner at a nice little restaurant that wasn’t too posh for Alec to feel uncomfortable but was nice enough to be classy. They talked about their various lives. Magnus spoke about his mother and how he’d found a family in Catarina, Ragnor and Raphael. Alec talked about Isabelle, Jace and Max and how his parents had never been around while they were growing up. He admitted that he never got a job in the field he’d studied simply because he already had one and he was using that to help Isabelle pay for her studies. He explained how he’d inherited the apartment he was living in from a distant relative he’d never met. How his great-aunt had somehow found out that Alec’s parents had disowned him for being gay, and since she had been in a relationship with a woman, she’d decided that her home and money would go to Alec. Magnus nodded along and took Alec’s hand when he mentioned his parents. The mood dropped a little but Magnus picked it back up again by telling Alec about how he’d managed to get banned from Peru.
When they’d finished, Magnus paid, after an argument over who was going to which resulted in Magnus telling Alec he could pay next time, and boy, that had done things to Alec’s heart.
As they left the restaurant, Magnus took Alec’s hand and they took a walk through a little park that was just across the street. It was nice and Alec couldn’t help but feel like it was rather romantic. The moon was shining brightly and if you looked up you could see a few stars. A walk in the moonlight sounded like something from the romcoms Izzy liked to watch but now Alec kind of got it. He turned to look at Magnus and his breath hitched slightly. The man was beautiful, but in the light of the moon, he looked ethereal. Alec wanted to capture the moment and frame it.
They walked around for a bit longer before heading back to where Magnus had parked his bike. The ride back to Alec’s felt too short and he made the most of having his arms around the man, holding him tightly and resting his chin on Magnus’s shoulder. When they arrived at Alec’s apartment, they both dismounted the bike and Magnus helped Alec out of the helmet before removing his own.
“I had a great night,” Alec whispered, looking into Magnus’ eyes.
“So did I,” Magnus replied, raising a hand to move a piece of hair out of Alec’s face. “May I kiss you?”
Alec was taken aback by the request and it took him a moment to respond.
“Yes.”
Magnus leaned in, pressing his lips to Alec’s. It was a soft kiss, a gentle peck that left Alec wanting more. As Magnus pulled away, Alec grabbed the lapel of his shirt, his eyes looking from Magnus’s to his lips and back again.
“Please?” Alec whispered, causing Magnus to groan and lean in again.
This time the kiss was more than just a peck. Magnus licked at the seam of Alec’s lips, his tongue slipping inside his mouth. It was soft and sweet and it made Alec’s toes curl. After a short while, which was really not long enough in Alec’s opinion, Magnus pulled away.
“Good night, Alexander.”
“Good night, Magnus. Let me know when you get home,” Alec replied, stealing another soft kiss.
He watched Magnus leave, his eyes tracking him until he disappeared from sight. As Alec turned to head inside a movement in one of the windows caught his attention. He looked up and groaned, recognising the silhouettes looking out of his kitchen window.
Alec entered the building and as the doors to the lift closed, he ran his finger along his lips. He could still feel the press of Magnus’s lips against his and it made butterflies erupt in his stomach. He opened the door and as he closed it behind him he wondered what it would be like to bring Magnus up one day. He hung his jacket up and toed off his shoes. As he walked into the living room, his siblings, who had seemed to have taken the “he’s coming look natural” expression to mean “sit in the most unnatural way possible on any available surface” looked up at him with expectant looks on their faces.
“So, how was it?” Isabelle asked.
“Perfect.”
Alec ignored her cooing noise. He didn’t even have the will to be annoyed at them for still being there. He was still on his happy cloud.
“I’m going to bed. Feel free to crash in the spare room. Good night.”
An echo of goodnights followed him as he closed the bedroom door and he collapsed onto the bed. Alec buried his face in his pillow, letting out his happiness and excitement at how it had gone. He felt like a teenager with a crush but couldn’t bring himself to feel embarrassed about it. Alec was alone in his room after all. He walked into the bathroom to brush his teeth, his mind thinking about the way Magnus had looked in the moonlight. After changing into his pyjamas and crawling into bed, Alec checked his phone and smiled at the message that had just come through.
Magnus: I got home safe and sound. I had a lovely time, Alexander. I’m looking forward to our second date 😊 Good night. Sleep well and sweet dreams 😘😘
Alec allowed himself a moment of happy shuffles before sending his reply.
Alexander: Good. I had a great time too. Good night, Magnus 😘
With a boost of courage, he added.
Alexander: Dream of me 😉
Magnus: Oh, darling, I most certainly will 😏
Alec chuckled as he put his phone on the nightstand. He fell asleep with a smile on his face and the memory of Magnus’s kiss on his lips.

CHAPTER NINE
Alec didn’t have to wait long for Magnus to message. His phone buzzed as soon as he locked the door and said goodbye to Lydia. He couldn’t stop a smile from spreading across his face.
Magnus: Enjoy your evening, Alexander. I hope you didn’t work too hard
Alec quickly checked that there was no one around before doing a little dance at the message, although he would never admit to doing such a thing. He quickly typed out his reply and headed home.
They spent the evening texting and Alec scolded Magnus since the man was still in his office and messaging Alec instead of working. Alec was grateful that there was no one around to witness his blush when Magnus said that he was a good distraction and a necessary one if Magnus wanted to stay sane. Apparently, having Alec’s number now meant that Magnus wasn’t holding back on the flirting and Alec wasn’t sure he was going to survive. He even stayed up until Magnus informed him he had gotten home at almost midnight, not being able to sleep until he knew that the man was safe. Not that he would ever admit that either. Alec had never cared about it before and after a couple of hours of texting, he was obsessed. He was beginning to fear for his sanity.
Since he was working the afternoon shifts, Alec slept in the following morning, only waking when the sun shone into his eyes. He groaned as he rolled over, grabbing his phone only to find a message from Magnus. Alec would usually ignore all messages until after he’d had coffee but as a smile spread across his face he opened it straight away.
Magnus: Good morning, Alexander. Have an amazing day and I look forward to seeing your beautiful face later 😍
Alexander: Morning. Sorry, just woke up. Have a great day, Magnus
Alec slid out of bed and was just about to walk into the bathroom when he heard his phone ping. He took a quick look at the screen and turned bright red when he saw the message Magnus had sent.
Magnus: No need to apologise, Alexander
Magnus: I bet you look adorable when you’ve just woken up 😊
Magnus: Have a great shower, Alexander… and think of me 😏
Alec placed the phone down, deciding to not open the messages quite yet when it pinged once again. He knew he shouldn’t look but curiosity got the better of him and he did, groaning at the message that awaited him.
Magnus: I could use a pic of your freshly-showered self to help get through my meetings today. So many boring meetings, Alexander, I need a sexy barista to distract me 😍😏🥺
Alec left his phone there as he headed into the bathroom to shower. He was going to pretend that he didn’t consider the picture and if he did think of Magnus while showering, well, that was between him and the bathroom tiles.
What Alec hadn’t expected when he got back to his room as he was getting dressed was to find another message from Magnus, making him feel a whole new set of emotions.
Magnus: I’m sorry if that was a bit much. I didn’t mean to come on too strong. Alexander, please tell me if I say anything that makes you uncomfortable
Alec sat on the bed, staring at the phone. He could feel the faint blush that had appeared on the tops of his cheeks. Magnus seemed to genuinely care about how Alec was feeling and Alec really didn’t know what to do with that information. Not wanting Magnus to worry that his messages had scared him off, Alec quickly unlocked his phone and typed out his reply.
Alexander: It’s okay, you didn’t make me feel uncomfortable. I promise that I will tell you though, if you ever do
As a thought popped into his mind, he allowed himself to send it before he could stop himself.
Alexander: And maybe one day I’ll send you that picture 😉
With that, Alec went to make himself some breakfast, leaving his phone on the dresser, slightly terrified of what he had just done.
***
Alec spent most of his workday texting Magnus when he wasn’t making coffee, which amused Lydia. Alec wasn’t one to spend time on his phone even when there were no customers in the store. She found him standing near the end of the counter smiling at the device.
“What’s got you all smiley?” she asked, her tone teasing.
“No one.”
“Mmhmm. Wouldn’t happen to be someone whose name starts with ‘M’ and ends in ‘S’ and likes to drink vanilla soya lattes?”
The tips of Alec’s ears turned pink and he glared at his so-called friend. His physical response told Lydia everything she needed to know and she just chuckled softly, patting his arm.
“He’s good for you,” she whispered. “You need to smile more often.”
Alec stuck his tongue out at her and went back to texting Magnus.
When Magnus came into the store, Alec was worried that he’d have nothing to talk about, since they’d been messaging nonstop all day. Fortunately, he was wrong and Magnus stuck around for a good fifteen minutes chatting with Alec while sipping his coffee.
“Do you always stay so late?” Alec asked, leaning on the counter as they talked.
“Most of the time,” Magnus replied. “I have a lot of responsibilities to take care of. Lots of things to go through and double-check and triple-check to make sure my case is as sure as possible.
Alec nodded, he understood Magnus’s point but at the same time, the man needed rest.
“But, you’ll end up wearing yourself out,” Alec stated, making Magnus’s eyes flash.
“Aww, are you worried about me?” Magnus asked his tone light and teasing.
“Yes,” Alec replied before realising what he’d said, turning a wonderful shade of pink. “I mean… you wouldn’t be able to help clients if you’re worn out.”
“Smooth,” Lydia mumbled from down the bar, earning herself a pen lid thrown in her direction.
Magnus was still smiling like all of his dreams had come true as he replied, “Well then, give me a reason to take a break. Go on a date with me.”
Alec blinked at him, processing what had just happened.
“This is the part where you say, ‘Yes, I’d like that very much’,” Lydia whispered, prompting Alec to raise the lidless pen threateningly.
“I’d love to,” he finally replied, causing Magnus to smile so brightly, Alec thought he could rival the sun.
“Wonderful, let’s say Saturday at 7 pm?”
Alec nodded. “Sounds good.”
Magnus picked up his coffee, the smile never leaving his face. “It’s a date,” he stated before walking away.

CHAPTER EIGHT
During his shift the afternoon following Magnus’s show, Alec wondered whether the man would still come by. He hadn’t mentioned other plans but a thought popped into Alec’s head that maybe he’d needed a day to rest.
Alec had been seeing Magnus’s dances in his mind every time he closed his eyes. The man had been stunning but the routine itself looked exhausting and Alec felt like Magnus deserved a break. He was carefully ignoring the thoughts and the desire to be the reason Magnus took a break from his work before a frown settled over his face as another thought entered his mind. He was about to shake it off when Lydia spotted it making Alec groan internally.
“What’s on your mind?” Lydia asked, leaning against the counter next to the coffee machine.
Alec didn’t say anything as he finished the drink he was making and handed it to the customer. As soon as they were gone, he leaned back, staring at the floor.
“Nothing.”
Lydia raised an eyebrow at him and Alec was actually annoyed for the first time ever that the store was especially quiet.
“It’s just…” Alec began before pausing to try and figure out how to express his thoughts. Lydia waited patiently at his side as he did. “I was wondering if Magnus ever takes a break,” he stated before adding in a quiet voice, “I feel like he needs to and I kind of wish I could be the reason.”
“You are,” a disgruntled voice announced, making them both jump.
Alec blinked slightly at the sight of Raphael who was watching them with an incredibly bored expression on his face.
“What can we get you?” Lydia asked, moving to the till as Alec just sort of stared at the man, trying to process the words.
“Just the water, please.”
Lydia nodded, sorting out the payment as Raphael turned slightly to face Alec.
“Listen, Magnus works hard, very hard. He’s brilliant at his job and has won a lot of cases. One of his ways of taking a break from that is dancing on the weekends. You, however, are his break from everything. When he gets back to the office after having seen you, it’s like he’s a new person. So, you are his reason for taking a break.”
Alec just blinked, kind of confused as to why Magnus’s friend was telling him this and why he sounded like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“You should ask him out,” Raphael stated, making Alec’s eyes widen.
“I…” Alec began but stopped when the man held up a hand.
“He wants to date you, he wants to ask you out but he’s afraid that you’ll say no, that you’ll think he’s coming on too strong. I haven’t seen him this into someone since, well, forever, but he doesn’t want to push in case he pushes too far. That being said, I can’t deal with his ridiculous pining anymore so please, for my sanity, ask him out or at least give him your number. Just something, because if I have to hear one more ‘Oh, Alexander is so cute, I wonder if he thinks about me' I’m going to jump through my office window.”
Alec didn’t get a chance to reply as Raphael just handed Lydia the money, told her to keep the change and left. Alec stared after him, the man’s words turning over and over in his brain. Magnus liked him? He was pulled from his thoughts by Lydia’s voice next to him.
“I told you so.”
Alec grunted and headed into the back to think. He stayed hidden for a good five minutes, going over the idea that Magnus liked him. Should he really give Magnus his number? How would he even do that? He could write it on the cup but what if Magnus didn’t see it? He shook his head, he was being silly. He wasn’t going to give his number to a customer. He didn’t give his number to anyone. Raphael must have been mistaken. With a slight nod and a sigh of relief that there were still a few hours left before Magnus’s usual visiting time, Alec returned to work, his mind still going over what had been said.
Unfortunately for Alec, the few hours went by rather quickly due to Alec cleaning as much as possible and before he knew it he was being greeted by a familiar voice.
“Afternoon, Alexander.”
Alec couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face. “Hi,” he replied, getting started on the coffee.
“How was your day?” he asked, twisting to the side so he could see Magnus as he worked.
“It was… challenging,” Magnus replied. “I’m working on a new case.”
Alec nodded along as Magnus gave him a few details.
“How about yours?” Magnus asked, leaning on the counter.
“Pretty good. It’s been very quiet.”
Magnus hummed, knowing how much Alec liked the quiet shifts.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t get to say hi on Saturday, we had to run, but the show was amazing,” Alec stated as he placed Magnus’s drink in front of him, taking the opportunity to avoid eye contact.
Magnus seemed to freeze for a split second before his smile grew even bigger and his eyes sparkled with what seemed to be happiness and excitement. Alec glanced up at Magnus and the sight made his heart flutter.
“You came?” Magnus asked, his voice slightly breathy as if he was speaking on the lover’s sigh and it sent a shiver down Alec’s spine.
“Of course,” Alec replied, “I said I would. Everyone was amazing. You were amazing.”
Magnus’s smile seemed to get impossibly bigger at that and Alec felt his cheeks redden as he realised what he’d said.
“Liked what you saw?” Magnus teased, causing the blush to darken on Alec’s cheeks as Magnus’s abs flashed inside his brain.
Before Alec had a chance to respond in any way, Magnus took a step back from the counter and Alec really didn’t like that.
“I’m sorry, that was too forward of me,” Magnus stated, his eyes still shining with the same happiness as earlier.
Alec half shrugged, “It’s okay. I did… like what I saw,” he trailed off, suddenly unsure.
The dazzling smile was back on Magnus’s face and Alec’s heart felt like it was going to burst out of his chest. They stared at each other for a moment, the tension palpable. It felt like something had changed, as if the energy had shifted in a way Alec wasn’t sure of but didn’t mind. Magnus was the one to break the silence, lifting his coffee as if to remind Alec that he hadn’t paid for it yet. It was at that moment that Alec realised that Lydia was nowhere to be seen, having snuck off into the office the moment Alec mentioned the show. Alec looked from Magnus to the coffee and back again before shaking his head.
“It’s fine.”
Magnus looked surprised at the statement and looked like he was about to argue but Alec cut him off.
“Honestly, it’s fine. You come in every day, we really should have started doing this sooner,” Alec stated, gesturing to the coffee he’d given Magnus. “From now on you never have to pay if I’m on shift.
Magnus’s smile softened and Alec ignored the way his heart thumped behind his ribs. “Thank you, Alexander.”
Alec smiled in return but as Magnus turned to leave, Alec spoke before he could think better of it.
“Wait, Magnus.”
Magnus turned as Alec grabbed a piece of paper from the receipt machine and a pen, scribbling his name and number on it. He slid it across the counter, his face bright red.
“Maybe we could have coffee or something?” He asked instead of an explanation.
Magnus picked up the paper like it was the most precious thing in the world, his face lighting up like a Christmas tree.
“Yes,” he stated, locking eyes with Alec. “I’ll text you.”
Alec nodded and watched the man leave. He stayed in that spot for a couple of minutes before reality came back to him and he turned around, coming face to face with a proud Lydia.
“What did I just do?” he whispered, more to himself than to her.
“You gave the man you like your number,” Lydia stated matter-of-factly.
“I gave Magnus my number,” Alec repeated, sounding out of breath. He thought for a moment before looking at Lydia, his smile returning to his face. “I gave my number to Magnus and he seemed happy.”
Lydia nodded and Alec let his heart be happy. It didn’t feel like a mistake. It didn’t feel like he’d done something stupid. It felt right. He did a little excited, happy dance in the backroom, feeling the excitement building as he waited for Magnus’s message.

CHAPTER SEVEN
Alec was a nervous wreck when he left his apartment on Saturday night to meet with Lydia and John before heading to the theatre where Magnus’s dance show was being held. Lydia teased him a little bit but didn’t annoy him too much as she could tell that he was already panicking about going and she didn’t want to make it worse.
Once they arrived at the theatre, Alec was taken in by the decor. They took their seats in the middle of the auditorium and Alec took in the stage. There was ivy hanging down the back and along the sides, the entrances to the wings were hidden by plant pots containing various brightly coloured flowers, and hidden amongst all the shrubbery were black feathers. Other black and coloured objects were scattered around the stage, strategically placed so that they wouldn’t interfere with the dancers in any way.
Eventually, the lights went down and the music started. The lights on the stage changed colours along with the mood of the dance. Alec’s breath caught in his throat as Magnus came on into a golden spotlight wearing a white suit. The man was beautiful and Alec couldn’t take his eyes off of him. He could feel Lydia’s gaze on him but he was too mesmerised by the sight of Magnus’s form to care.
The next time Magnus was on stage, Alec was just as captivated. This time, Magnus seemed to be more of a villain as he was wearing a black costume, with silver glittery makeup which the red lighting accentuated beautifully. If Alec thought he was beautiful before, then he was absolutely stunning now. He looked like some form of devil and Alec would have happily followed him into the depths of hell had the man asked.
It was three-quarters of the way through the dance and Alec forgot how to breathe. The other dancers pulled Magnus’s jacket away which left the man shirtless, the silver glitter running down his chest catching the light and making him look like some kind of Prince of Hell. Alec hadn’t realised his mouth was hanging open until Lydia nudged him. His eyes had been glued to Magnus’s abs that shone with a mix of sweat and glitter and Alec had an overwhelming urge to trace them with his tongue.
After the show, they all headed to the bar area where they could wait for the dancer to join them. Alec stood with Lydia and John, wanting to run away before he had to face Magnus. He was rather pleased when Lydia placed a soft hand on his arm.
“We’re going to head out,” she said over the noise of the people. “John has an early start in the morning.”
Alec nodded, “Okay. I’ll leave with you.”
“No,” Lydia said softly, “You stay and see Magnus.”
Alec looked at her for a second like she’d lost her damn mind. He turned when he felt John patting his shoulder.
“Or you head home and sort out your thoughts before you see him on Monday,” he suggested, seemingly having read Alec’s mind.
Lydia looked like she was about to protest but John just kissed her temple. “It’s better for Alec to figure out what he wants to say,” he explained, and Alec wondered when he’d gotten to know him so well. “He might just spew his every thought or forget how words work otherwise.”
John’s tone was teasing but Alec spluttered indignantly anyway. The man was right, of course, but he didn’t need to point it out.
“Hmm, good point,” Lydia agreed.
Alec rolled his eyes and ushered his friends out before the dancers had a chance to emerge.
***
The following day, Alec couldn’t get the images of Magnus out of his mind. He’d woken up that morning with a sticky situation in his boxers and the lingering vision of Magnus’s abs behind his eyelids.
He sighed as he flicked through the tv channels, trying to find something to distract himself with. He knew that Magnus’s group was doing another show that afternoon and he was half tempted to go and watch simply for research purposes.
“Get it together,” he scolded himself before turning off the tv in favour of tidying his apartment.
It was a few hours later when he heard a knock on the door. Alec frowned, not expecting anyone but smiled softly at the sight of his sister on the threshold. The smile morphed into suspicion when he saw she was holding coffee and Jace was behind her with what looked like a box of pastries.
“What are you doing here?” Alec asked as he let them into his home and followed them to the couch.
“Can’t we stop by and visit our favourite big brother?” Jace replied, grinning sweetly at him.
“I’m your only big brother,” Alec replied, taking the coffee Isabelle held out for him.
“Can’t we just want to hang out?” Isabelle asked, blinking her puppy eyes up at him.
Years ago, those eyes would have worked wonders on Alec, and on occasion still did. When his siblings turn up on his doorstep unannounced with his favourite coffee and cakes it sets off alarm bells that not even said puppy eyes can stop.
“Not when you come with food.”
Isabelle huffed and sat back on the couch, her arms crossed over her chest. Alec sat in one of the armchairs so he could watch his siblings on the couch. Jace had a smirk on his face that usually meant he knew something Alec didn’t and probably didn’t want to know because it would most likely be ammunition for teasing. Isabelle however, looked far too innocent for her own good, a bit like a cat that knocked something off a shelf and then looks at you with an it wasn’t me expression.
Alec didn’t have to wait long before the troublesome duo, as Alec liked to think of them, exchanged a glance and turned to him with shit-eating grins on their faces making every single alarm bell in Alec’s head go absolutely nuts.
“So,” Isabelle started.
“We went to an interesting event today,” Jace continued.
Alec narrowed his eyes, hoping that this was not going where he thought it was.
“It was a very nice show in a beautiful theatre,” Isabelle added, her eyes glued to her brother’s face.
Yep, this was going where he thought it was. Alec tried to keep his expression neutral as he hummed in response, ignoring the flashes of Magnus dancing in his mind.
“The whole thing was lovely and the dancers were incredible,” Jace stated.
“Specifically one who ended up shirtless at the end,” Isabelle finished. “You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, would you Alec?”
Alec choked on his coffee, coughing violently until there were tears in his eyes. “No, why do you ask?” he wheezed.
Isabelle shrugged. “Oh, no reason. Just because a certain regular at the coffee shop was in it and mentioned that you said you’d stop by.” Isabelle eyed him suspiciously. “But I suppose if you didn’t then you wouldn’t know about the gold glitter.”
“It was silver,” Alec corrected before he realised.
“So you did go!” Isabelle shrieked and Alec could feel the colour drain from his face. “Why didn’t you tell me? We could have gone together and spoken to Magnus.”
“That’s why,” Alec said, tone showing his annoyance and frustration. “You would have teased me the whole time and made me stay and talk to him when I really didn’t want to.”
“But why?” Isabelle cut him off, her voice soft. “Why wouldn’t you want to stick around and talk to him after?”
Alec pinched the bridge of his nose but before he got a chance to say anything, Jace spoke.
“Because he likes him.”
Alec stared at him, mouth open slightly. “How?”
“Since you didn’t tell Izzy, she dragged me along and told me who Magnus was and how he was the ‘cute regular’ you would talk about.”
Alec blinked and Isabelle looked between the two. “But what does that have to do with anything?” she asked.
Jace rolled his eyes. “Come on, Iz, you know Alec isn’t like us. He doesn’t go up to people and start talking to them for no reason. Do you really think that he would be able to handle talking to Magnus after seeing him in those outfits, and shirtless for that matter, without being able to take a moment to sort out his thoughts?”
Isabelle seemed pensive for a moment before nodding in understanding and agreement. She smiled softly at Alec, leaning forward to pat his arm.
“Sorry,” she stated. “Also, Magnus seemed disappointed you didn’t show.”
Alec placed a hand on hers, smiling reassuringly at her. “I’ll tell him tomorrow.”
Jace grinned from his spot leaning against the arm of the couch. “Wanna tell him you want to lick his abs too?” he asked, laughing loudly as Alec threw the tv remote at his head.

CHAPTER SIX
The following couple of days were unnerving for Alec. Magnus would come in at the usual time but, whereas before they would share soft smiles and lingering looks, now they were talking. Magnus would ask Alec about his day and talk about his own. The first time it happened Alec was speechless as his mind was still focused on the events of the previous day. The whole phone number conversation that Lydia insisted he only caught a small part of was also plaguing his mind. Either way, Alec was not expecting to learn more about the man’s life in two days than he had in the entire six months this thing had been happening.
Alec collapsed on his couch, depositing the bag of Chinese food onto the coffee table, his mind replaying his conversation with Magnus from that day. They’d talked a bit and Magnus had stuck around for a good half-hour, just leaning on the counter talking with Alec. He’d learnt about the man’s job and the reason he always got coffee when everyone else was leaving was because he tended to work late nights. Alec had opened up about Isabelle, Jace and Max. Alec had learned that Magnus had a cat that he’d called Chairman Meow and Alec had found that absolutely adorable. Alec smiled over his box of takeout, the image of Magnus’s face, bright and passionate as he spoke about his work and his cat, making Alec’s heart race. He leaned back against the couch, eyes closed as he sighed. He was falling even more for the man and the thought scared him.
Alec was a little distracted at work the following day, his mind constantly going to Magnus. He couldn’t help but wonder what the man would look like while playing with his cat. The thought alone was enough to bring a smile to his face.
“Daydreaming again?” Lydia asked, leaning back against the counter as she watched Alec run the cloth over the same spot for the last five minutes as he stared into the distance.
Alec blinked, seemingly coming back down to planet Earth and smiled sheepishly at her. “No,” he stated firmly, moving to get more cleaning spray.
Lydia hummed, “Let me guess. A tall, handsome man who usually has spike-up hair and makeup and some very interesting suits has taken up residence in your mind?”
Alec stared at her, his cheeks flushing. He wanted to deny it but she knew him well enough to be able to see right through him.
Lydia shook her head and patted his arm softly. “It’s okay,” she said, sounding a little like she was talking to an animal that might spook at any second. “We all daydream and fantasise about people we like.”
Alec nodded, not really knowing what to say. He was saved from saying anything by his sister coming in.
“Hey,” Isabelle said, her eyes darting between Alec and Lydia. “Can I get my usual pick-me-up?”
Alec nodded and got to work preparing her drink. His eyes slid towards the door at every sound from the street. Isabelle’s appearance usually meant that Magnus wouldn’t be that far behind. He was brought back to what was happening when he heard his sister’s voice as she spoke to Lydia.
“He’s never that enthusiastic to see me,” she teased, watching her brother turn to look at the door for about the hundredth time.
Lydia chuckled. “He’s not that invested in seeing anyone.”
“I can hear you,” Alec grumbled as he finished his sister’s drink.
Isabelle was about to say something, probably something embarrassing when the door opened and Magnus walked in. The moment Alec laid eyes on the man, a smile spread across his face. He saw Isabelle’s eyes widen slightly at the sight and he glared at her, daring her to say anything. She must have got the message because, for once, she didn’t tease. She smiled softly at Magnus as he kissed her cheek.
“It’s good to see you, Magnus, but I’m afraid I have to run. A lot of assignments are due.”
With that Isabelle left, waving goodbye to Lydia and throwing a wink in Alec’s direction. Alec rolled his eyes before turning back to Magnus, his smile still in place.
“Hey,” he said as he started on the drink. “How was your day?”
“It was good. Quite stressful but not too bad. How about yours, Alexander?”
Alec hummed, “It’s been quiet, which is nice.”
Magnus nodded. Alec had already gone on a rant to the man about how much he hated rushes. It had been the most he’d spoken to Magnus because the man had come in just after a rush and Alec was still coming down from the overwhelming stress from said rush. He’d fully poured his feelings on the subject out to Magnus and only realised it after. He’d apologised and ran away to hide in the back absolutely mortified. Magnus, however, had been over the moon at Alec’s venting and had waited until the barista returned to make him promise that he would never apologise for venting to him again as he was happy to listen. Alec had thanked him and given him his drink for free.
“Oh,” Magnus started, pulling something out of his pocket, “I wanted to leave this here, in case anyone is interested.”
Alec took the flyer Magnus handed him. It was for a dance show and the date, time and location were written at the bottom. Alec looked up from the flyer at Magnus who was watching him closely.
“I’m part of a dance group and we’re doing a show next weekend. We’ve only just got the flyer back so I wanted to drop one off in case someone fancied dropping by.”
Alec nodded, looking back at the flyer, his eyes zeroing in on the website where you could buy tickets. “I’ll try and stop by.”
Magnus’s face lit up and Alec heard Lydia chuckle from behind him. “Really?” Magnus asked, sounding surprised.
Alec nodded. “Sure. I’ve always been curious so I’ll see if I can make it. No promises, though.”
Alec normally didn’t work those days but that didn’t mean his annoying siblings wouldn’t have some kind of emergency that he was needed for. That was generally how his weekends went.
Magnus beamed at him and headed out. Alec watched him leave like he always did. It was only after the man had disappeared from his line of sight that he realised what he’d said. He turned to Lydia, his eyes wide and his ears pink.
“What did I do?” he asked, his voice containing the panic he was feeling.
“You said you’d go and see Magnus dance.”
“Yeah,” Alec whispered. He was afraid she was going to say that.
Lydia shook her head and placed a hand on Alec’s shoulder. She could see the panic rising up inside her friend. “Relax,” she stated. “It’ll be fine. He’s not expecting you to turn up so you can still not go.”
“I want to,” Alec said quietly, his gaze locking with hers for a second.
Lydia smiled, patting his shoulder. “If you’d like, I’ll happily go with you.”
Alec’s head snapped up to look at his friend. “You will?” he asked hopefully. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to go alone, he just didn’t want it to seem weird or creepy.
Lydia chuckled softly, pressing a soft kiss to Alec’s cheek. “Yes, I will. And I’ll bring John along with me.”
Alec groaned. He liked John and he was perfect for Lydia but being around the pair was nauseating. They were generally all over each other, and just disgustingly cute and in love. It made Alec want what they had and he never knew what to do with those feelings. So he tended to avoid being with the pair for any length of time.
“So, I’ll be the third wheel…” Alec mumbled as he gathered things to take into the back and checked what he needed to bring through.
“You know you can change that by asking Magnus out, right?” Lydia stated as he walked away, smiling at the grumbled “I hate you,” Alec threw back at her.

CHAPTER FIVE
The following few days were the most boring days of Alec’s life. Normally, he would spend his shifts excited to see Magnus, but with the man away for a while there was nothing to look forward to, which meant he was grumpier than usual. Lydia had decided it was best not to tease him about it, at least while Magnus was away but unfortunately for Alec, his sister didn’t share the same thoughts as his friend.
It had been four days since Magnus had left and Alec couldn’t stand Isabelle’s knowing looks, her light comments about how cute it is that one specific person can have such an effect on him. Just as Alec was about to snap at his sister, the door opened and Alec relaxed at the sight of Magnus walking in. His eyes lingered on the man, taking in the sight of Magnus dressed in a form-fitting grey suit with gold detailing. He heard his sister scoff at the reaction but her teasing never came, not when their eyes fell on the man following Magnus.
“Magnus, come on,” the man grumbled, tugging on Magnus’s hand and Alec hated the way his heart clenched in his chest.
“I told you I need coffee, now are you paying like you promised?” Magnus’s tone was light and a small smile tugged at his lips as he looked at the man.
Alec locked eyes with his sister, knowing that she could read him like a book. He turned to head into the back room hoping to hide until the pair left, only for the voice he’d been dreaming about over the last few days caught his attention.
“Alexander,” Magnus exclaimed, a grin spreading across his face causing the other man to scoff. “How have you been?”
Alec swallowed around the lump in his throat before smiling back, although it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Good. Things have been good. How about you?”
“Pretty great, actually. It was a productive couple of days and I managed to get Raphael here and hopefully convince him that I’m a better person for him to be with.” Magnus explained, gesturing to Raphael who was paying for the drinks.
Alec’s entire body tensed at the statement. “That’s great,” he said, his voice strained. He coughed and turned to start the two drinks.
Raphael glanced between Magnus and Alec, having sensed the tension that had suddenly filled the space. Isabelle and Lydia were watching Alec closely. He was incredibly quiet as he worked, his attention purely focused on what he was doing. Magnus seemed to have picked up on the shift and turned to Isabelle, slightly confused about what had happened. Raphael rolled his eyes and leaned on the counter as Alec placed the drinks down.
“He wants me to start working for his company,” the man stated, sounding bored and like he wished he could have been literally anywhere else. “You know, before he gives you the wrong idea with his poor choice of words.”
Alec blinked at him and Magnus seemed to realise what he said and smiled softly. “Yes, I’d like Raphael to join my team. His talents are being wasted where he is now,” he quickly explained, looking at Alec like he needed him to believe him, to understand that there was nothing between them.
Alec smiled a genuine smile this time and nodded. “You should join Magnus’s team,” he said softly.
Raphael rolled his eyes. “And have to listen to him go on and on about the ‘cute barista at the local coffee shop’ in person? I think not.”
Alec spluttered, his cheeks turning red as Magnus turned to glare at his friend. Raphael only blinked at him. “What? I can at least hang up on you when you do now. If I’m in the same office I can’t.”
It was Magnus’s turn to roll his eyes. “Exactly. You can’t run so you can listen to how beautiful Alexander is all day long.”
Alec made a noise like he was choking and slipped into the back room. Isabelle laughed and patted Magnus’s shoulder. “Please don’t kill my brother,” she said softly before winking at Lydia as she left.
Magnus blinked, looking at the door to the back like he hoped Alec would materialise in front of it. Lydia smirked at the slightly sad look in the man’s eyes.
“He’ll come back out. You’ve just thrown him. He’s not used to whatever that was,” she explained, gesturing to the two men with her hand.
Raphael sighed and turned to leave. “Leave your number, Magnus, so this doesn’t drag out for another century.”
Lydia chuckled but then glanced towards the staffroom. She knew Alec well enough to know that he would be too afraid to actually contact Magnus if he left his number. Before she could say as much, Magnus spoke.
“I don’t want to scare him though. He seems overwhelmed as it is, I don’t want him to feel pressured into messaging and then not do it because it’s too much.”
Lydia smiled at him, Magnus seemed to know Alec better than she realised. Raphael on the other hand, was looking at Magnus like there was something seriously wrong with him.
“Since when do you think this much about giving your number to someone?” he asked. “You’ve normally done it as soon as you’ve met them.”
Magnus looked at his friend in a way that made the man wrinkle his nose in what looked to Lydia like mock disgust.
“I really like him,” Magnus said softly. “I don’t want to scare him away.”
Raphael blinked before sighing. “Fine. You have a week before I give him your number myself.”
Magnus opened his mouth to protest when the door to the back opened and a slightly confused Alec came back to his place behind the counter, shooting an apologetic smile towards Lydia. Magnus’s eyes lit up at the sight and Raphael gagged from where he was behind the man, which earned him an elbow to the ribs.
“See you tomorrow, Alexander?” Magnus asked, his voice soft, hopeful and flirty.
Alec nodded. “Yeah, see you tomorrow.”
Alec watched the pair leave, his eyes glued to the figures arguing as they crossed the road outside the shop. Lydia was leaning back against the counter, her eyes fixed on Alec.
“How much did you hear?” she asked, knowing that from the look on her friend’s face, he must have heard most of it and most likely not the important part.
“He doesn’t want to give me his number,” Alec replied and of course, that was the part that Alec chose to focus on.
“He said quite a lot after that,” Lydia stated.
Alec shrugged. “I’m not good enough for him, Lydia. He knows that.”
Lydia rolled her eyes and turned Alec to face her. “He very clearly stated that he likes you and doesn’t want to overwhelm you or scare you off by coming on too strong.”
Alec went to argue that that was his point, that he wasn’t good enough but Lydia raised an eyebrow at him and gently smacked the back of his head.
“Don’t you dare,” she scolded, and Alec wondered, not for the first time if she could read his mind.
Alec sighed and started gathering things to clean. “Can you get someone to cover my shift tomorrow?” he asked hopefully.
“Absolutely not,” she replied, smiling as Alec groaned as he disappeared into the back.

CHAPTER FOUR
Alec couldn’t get the image of Magnus on a bike out of his head. He was so distracted that he almost spilt a shot of coffee while preparing an order. Lydia was watching him curiously, wondering what had gotten into her friend.
“Alec,” she started, once the rush had cleared and it was just the two of them.
Alec hummed turning to look at her, an eyebrow raised in question.
“Are you okay? You seem distracted.”
Alec shook his head, dismissing the thoughts of Magnus and the bike Isabelle had mentioned. “I’m fine.”
Lydia smirked at him, “It’s the hot coffee guy, isn’t it?”
Alec coughed, a light blush spreading across his cheeks. Lydia just shook her head.
“Magnus,” Alec eventually said, his voice quiet. “Izzy said his name is Magnus.”
Lydia raised an eyebrow. “How is it that your sister found out his name before you did?”
“They’re friends.”
Lydia was about to say something about that when Isabelle walked in, a bright smile on her face. Alec’s eyes narrowed immediately, he knew that smile anywhere. That was his sister's I’ve done something you’re not going to like because it involves your life smile.
“What did you do?” Alec said in greeting, making some of the other customers look at him in mild concern.
“Why, hello to you, big brother,” Isabelle replied, blinking innocently at him.
Alec rolled his eyes as he proceeded to make her drink. He knew his sister well enough to know that she wasn’t going to tell him what she’d done. He’d have to find out when the time came.
Unfortunately for Alec, the time came a lot sooner than he thought as Magnus walked into the shop just as Alec was handing Isabelle her coffee. Alec stared as Magnus was wearing a leather biker jacket. Alec had seen Magnus in various coloured, very well-fitting suits, which had admittedly not helped with his crush because well, the hot man was wearing a well-fitting suit, there wasn’t much Alec could do to avoid the power of that entire look. This, however, was different. Alec had never seen Magnus in any form of coat other than his suit jacket so seeing him in a sparkly blue and white biker jacket made his heart race and his palms sweat.
“Isabelle,” Magnus greeted, kissing her cheek and Alec promptly turned to prepare the drink, trying to ignore the flare-up of jealousy he could feel.
“Magnus,” Isabelle replied. “Sorry I can’t stay, I really have to study.”
Magnus nodded, “Of course, work is important. Besides, I’m sure your gorgeous brother can keep me company.”
“When did Jace get here?” Alec asked, glancing over at Lydia who gawked at him like he had suddenly grown three heads.
Isabelle laughed, and Alec heard Magnus’s soft chuckle. “I meant you, darling,” Magnus stated, catching Alec’s eye.
Alec blinked and then flushed a deep red as he promptly dropped a shot glass, the sound echoing through the cafe.
“Sorry,” Alec mumbled, heading to the back to grab the supplies to clean up only to be stopped by Lydia.
“I’ve got it. You stay and keep him company.”
Alec glared after her as she disappeared into the back. He took a deep breath and turned around, a small embarrassed smile on his face. He and Magnus stared at each other for a moment before they were pulled back to reality by Isabelle.
“Okay, I’m off.”
“Remember to take small breaks and to eat,” Alec called after her.
“Good advice,” Magnus said, leaning against the counter as Alec made the man’s drink.
Alec hummed, “She’s pretty good at remembering to be honest. I never did.”
Magnus raised an eyebrow in question. “Oh?”
Alec hummed, “I was studying law and when it came up to exam time, I was so focused on the work that I would forget to eat. Izzy and our brother Jace would have to come and drag me away every so often.”
Alec was surprised at how easily he could talk to Magnus like this. That came crashing down when he turned back from the coffee machine and came face to face with the man and his ability to talk suddenly left him. He should have known that looking at Magnus would do that. Alec cleared his throat as he handed the drink over. Before he had a chance to say anything, Magnus spoke.
“So, Alexander, your sister tells me you like motorbikes.”
Alec blinked, “Yes?”
Magnus hummed, pulling his phone from his pocket and scrolling through it before turning it for Alec to see. “This is my baby,” Magnus stated, a smile spreading across his face.
The bike was beautiful, the blue and the white blended together perfectly. But what caught Alec’s eye was the man on the bike. Magnus was straddling his bike, his helmet balanced on the seat in front of him. He was wearing the same jacket he wore to the shop and matching trousers. His eyes seemed to shine as he laughed at the camera and Alec’s heart began to race. Fuck, the man was gorgeous.
“Why thank you,” Magnus replied, putting the phone away making Alec freeze.
“Did I…?” he mumbled, stumbling slightly over the words.
“Yes, darling, you did say it out loud.”
Alec turned red once again, feeling the need to apologise. Before he got the chance though, Magnus spoke.
“I’m heading out of town for the next few days, so I won’t see you until I get back.”
Alec nodded, wondering why the man was telling him this piece of information. Magnus picked up his cup and waved to Lydia who she was standing in the doorway to the office before heading for the door.
“Don’t forget about me, Alexander,” he said, turning back and winking at him before leaving the shop.
Alec watched him leave before banging his head on the counter with a groan. Like he was ever going to forget Magnus, especially in that jacket.
“You know,” Lydia said as she walked past, “I’m sure, if you asked him nicely he’d fuck you while wearing that jacket.”
Lydia cackled as she dodged the cleaning cloth Alec threw at her, as he grumbled about needing new friends under his breath.

CHAPTER THREE
The last thing Alec expected was for Isabelle and <;b>vanilla soya latte to form a friendship. It had sort of become a thing now that Izzy would stop by for coffee around the same time that vanilla soya latte would.
Lydia couldn’t help but roll her eyes at the way Alec would go tense and his eyes would burn holes into the side of his sister’s head. Izzy would happily ignore Alec, even though she could feel his gaze on her.
Alec also wasn’t expecting to find his sister on the couch when he got home, but there she was, curled up under the blanket watching Netflix.
“Izzy?” Alec asked, suddenly concerned that she wasn’t in her dorm. “Did something happen?”
Isabelle turned to look at her brother, a smile on her face. “I brought you pizza,” she stated, gesturing to the box on the table.
Alec eyed her suspiciously. Isabelle tended to bring food when she wanted something. He carefully made his way to the sofa. The pizza was still hot, which meant that his sister had planned her visit to make sure it was still hot when Alec got home. He sat on the end of the couch, opposite his sister and grabbed the box, waiting for Isabelle to explain why she was there. After a while, Alec glanced at his sister who was still watching the tv show she'd put on. Alec relaxed a little, figuring his sister had just stopped by to hang out.
Alec’s hope died just a few minutes later when Izzy suddenly turned her whole body to face him, crossing her legs and placing her hands on Alec’s arm.
“So,” Izzy began, her voice soft and sweet, “Magnus?”
Alec blinked at her, slightly confused. “Magnus?”
It was Izzy’s turn to be confused. “Magnus. The guy from the coffee shop?”
“Oh,” Alec said quietly, his mind replaying the name over and over in his head.
Izzy smirked at him, “So, you’re always talking about this guy from the coffee shop and yet, you never knew his name?”
Alec half shrugged, “It never came up.”
“You could have asked.”
“And risk him not coming back? No thanks.”
Izzy rolled her eyes in a way that Alec just knew she picked up from him.
“He likes you,” Isabelle said after a moment of silence.
“Iz…” Alec started only to be cut off by his sister’s glare.
“He tensed when he first saw us interact. He deflates when you’re not there and he asked how we knew each other as if he wanted to make sure we weren’t in some kind of relationship.”
Alec wrinkled his nose and ignored how his heartbeat picked up. Izzy gave him a knowing smirk and Alec suddenly wished the couch would swallow him and get him out of the inevitable interrogation he was about to get from his sister.
Isabelle shuffled forward on the couch, looking at her brother like she wanted to see into his soul.
“What?” Alec asked as he leaned forward.
“Do you like him?” she asked, watching him closely.
Alec blinked at her, not knowing how to respond. “I don’t know him, Iz,” he replied. “Up until five minutes ago, I didn’t even know his name.”
Isabelle shrugged, “You could always talk to him. Could be a good place to start.”
Alec glared at her. “I’m not discussing this with you,” he said, his voice holding a certain sternness to it that only appeared when he was serious.
“Alec,” Isabelle whined, shifting closer to her brother. “I’ve heard you mention the cute coffee guy before so now you can actually start talking to him. What could possibly go wrong?”
Alec looked at his sister like she was mad, “He could hear me!”
Isabelle just laughed and shook her head. “Fine, be like that,” she stated as she shifted back to her spot. “But if you did, maybe he’d show you pictures of his blue and white bike.”
Alec whipped his head around to look at his sister. “His what?”
Isabelle cackled from where she was leaning against the arm of the couch. “You’re gonna talk to him now, aren’t you?” she teased.
Alec huffed, damn his sister for knowing of his love for motorbikes. “I hate you,” he mumbled.
Isabelle just hummed and dodged the cushion Alec threw at her.

CHAPTER TWO
Things continue the same way over the next couple of weeks. The tension between Alec and vanilla soya latte seemed to be growing more and more with every interaction. Lydia sighed as she watched Alec watch the guy leave.
“You do realise there’s something between you, right?” she asked, leaning against the counter as Alec sighed hopelessly and returned to the cleaning he’d been doing before vanilla soya latte walked in.
“He’s just being polite,” Alec replied, carefully hooking jugs onto his fingers.
Lydia huffed, shaking her head slightly. “Alec, no one keeps that much eye contact for nothing. Besides, he seemed really disappointed when he came in yesterday and you were in the back.”
Alec froze. “He came in?” he repeated quietly.
Lydia nodded, her eyes fixed on her friend. Alec had sulked all evening because he thought that the man hadn’t stopped by. It was mildly concerning really, how seeing vanilla soya latte could affect his mood. He had stubbornly ignored the way his heart had clenched and ached at not seeing him. Alec tried to process what Lydia had said about looking disappointed but he just shrugged it off as something work-related. Maybe the man’s day hadn’t gone well or maybe he had a date that was cancelled. Alec quickly dismissed that thought as his heart gave a painful twang in his chest.
Lydia shook her head at his antics. She was pretty sure that the attraction between the two was mutual despite what Alec claimed. Alec also didn’t see the man staring at him hopefully when he would come in and while the drink was being made, like he was hoping Alec would see him. Lydia sighed and turned back to take the next order as Alec headed into the back to do the dishes.
***
A few days later vanilla soya latte came in like he usually did and Lydia watched as he scanned the room like he was looking for something or someone. The man seemed to deflate when he wasn’t able to locate what or who he was looking for. Lydia was convinced it was Alec who was working in the back. She chatted with the man for a bit before shifting to take the next person’s order before making the drinks.
“Oh, hey,” she smiled as she came face to face with a confused Isabelle.
“Is Alec here?” she asked, smiling at Lydia. “I thought he was working today.”
Lydia nodded, “Yeah, one sec.”
With that, Lydia made her way to the staff door and tapped on it, letting Alec know he was needed.
It didn’t take long for Alec to emerge, drying his hands on a paper towel. Lydia smirked slightly as he saw vanilla soya latte perk up at the sight of Alec.
“Coffee?” Isabelle asked sweetly, making puppy dog eyes at her brother.
Alec rolled his eyes and turned to make the drinks, smiling at <;b>vanilla soya latte in the process. He was focused on his task when his ears picked up the sound of his sister’s voice. He looked over his shoulder to see who she was talking to and scowled when he saw her chatting with vanilla soya latte. He felt his stomach tighten at the sight. Of course, Izzy would get to him first, why would he look at Alec when she was right there? He quickly finished his sister’s drink, ignoring Lydia’s questioning gaze.
“Here,” he stated, placing Isabelle’s coffee on the side.
Isabelle beamed at him, picking up the cup and taking a sip. “You’re the best.”
Alec grunted and returned to preparing the other drink, his body tensing slightly as his sister continued to talk to vanilla soya latte. Once the drink was ready, Alec placed it on the side, a smile spreading across his face as the man took it, their eyes locking for a beat too long.
“Thank you,” the man said, smiling brightly at him before turning back to finish his conversation with Isabelle.
Alec’s smile fell from his lips and he glared at his sister as he cleaned the counters before returning to the back with a huff, his heart aching as he saw his sister laugh and place a hand on the man’s arm. Lydia watched him go with concern and saw the man move away from Isabelle’s touch as he looked around and seemed to deflate once again when he couldn’t find Alec. With a quick goodbye to Isabelle and Lydia, the man left. Lydia was going to have to tell Alec, but whether the man would believe her was another kettle of fish.

Better Latte Than Never
This fic was created for the Shadowhunters Mini Bang 2023: Presented by the @malecdiscordserver
CHAPTER ONE
Alec sighed as he headed to work. It wasn’t that he hated his job, he just hated dealing with the general public, especially when said public was in need of their caffeine boost. Alec had started working at the coffee shop, The Institute, a year earlier. It was only supposed to be a temporary thing to help pay the bills while he was studying for his Law degree, but once he started he just never left. It helped that he got on well with his manager, Lydia, and to be perfectly honest, Alec was only staying for her. They got on really well and Alec may be a little bit too invested in her budding relationship with John, their delivery guy. Hey, Alec was very much single and living vicariously through his friend.
Alec waved to Lydia as he walked in and headed to the office. He checked his phone as he put on his apron, rolling his eyes at the message from his sister, Isabelle, asking him to keep a coffee aside for her. Ever since he started working at the shop, his sister seemed to think it was an invitation to study there and use her brother’s discount. Not that Alec minded, mind you, but it was more who she chose to bring with her periodically that was the issue. Alec was protective of his sister, sue him. Alec tucked his phone into the pocket of his jeans and headed out to join Lydia behind the counter, ready to deal with the slowness of the closing shift.
Alec sighed as yet another customer complained about the wait. The closing shift was usually quiet due to the area being populated mostly by offices and people tended to leave at five, ready to go home and not really wanting more coffee during their evening. Today, however, was busy. The queue was nearly at the door and didn’t seem to be getting any shorter. Alec and Lydia were trying their best to get things done quickly and efficiently but there was still a bit of a wait for drinks to be served. Besides, they could only go as fast as the machine. Most customers were understanding, telling them not to worry about the wait but this guy had begun moaning the second he got to the counter. Alec had to resist rolling his eyes as the guy spieled on about how he was going to be late for an important meeting and for that reason, he wanted to lodge a complaint. Alec had politely informed him that he was welcome to go to one of the many cafes in the area if he was in that much of a hurry. The man looked like he was going to explode as he huffed, turning to leave. He flipped Lydia off as she told him to have a nice day in the sweetest voice she could muster.
Alec hummed as he felt her pat his arm gently once the queue had finally gone.
“How are you holding up?” she asked, knowing that Alec wasn’t the most social person and how rushes tended to stress him out.
Alec grunted, making Lydia chuckle. The sound was everything she needed to know.
“Just do the drinks,” she said, gently pushing Alec over to the machine. “I’ll take the orders and talk to customers.”
Alec mumbled thanks and lost himself in the easy routine of making coffee. He was pulled from his thoughts a while later by Lydia whisper-shouting his name. Alec turned to look at her, an eyebrow raised in question when Lydia nodded towards the door. Alec followed the direction she gestured in and promptly forgot how to breathe.
The one thing that Alec always looked forward to during his shift and that helped him get through it, was this specific customer. Alec didn’t know his name but he came in every weekday at the same time and always ordered the same drink, vanilla soya latte and, most importantly, he was the most beautiful man Alec had ever seen. As vanilla soya latte entered and headed for the counter, Alec started making his drink. He took his time, getting it perfect for the perfect man ordering it. Alec could feel Lydia rolling her eyes at him. As soon as the drink was made, Alec turned around placing it on the counter. He smiled softly at the man, his stomach fluttering as he smiled back. Their eyes locked for a moment, soft smiles on both their faces and if Alec lingered a bit too long, well, that was his business. Vanilla soya latte took the drink with a soft “thanks” and headed out. Alec watched him go like he always did, completely ignoring Lydia shaking her head behind him.

hello! this is your Malec secret santa 💜 I'm super excited to create for you ;D I did want to ask- I know you don't want angst/sadness, but what's the consensus on hurt/comfort (with predominate comfort over hurt but a little bit sprinkled in briefly). I'm good to focus on pure fluff or whatever you prefer, but I wanted to check and see :o
Hey! Yeah, I’m not a huge fan of angst/sadness but hurt/comfort as you said isn’t too bad, as long as it’s mostly comfort and a happy ending (I don’t like them hurt for too long or in the end). So yeah, a small bit of hurt with comfort is fine, as long as they are happy and they love each other 😁 (I hope that makes sense 😅) otherwise, I love fluff and smut and basically them being adorably in love 🥰
I hope this helps. Don’t hesitate if you need any more information from me for this. I’m sure whatever you create will be truly amazing 🖤
