"You can not be serious."

The boys in front of you offered you a confused smile, arm extended awkwardly in an attempt to pass you your drink. His name tag read Hyunsuk—the very name you made up when your friends were badgering you about a boyfriend. Not to mention that he's tall and has high cheekbones, both of which are also features of your imaginary boyfriend. Seriously, what are the odds?

Right as your fingers grasped the cup, narrowly missing his fingers, you heard the loud voices of your friends. "I am so sorry for anything that happens here." You took your drink and quickly directed them to a table and away from the counter.

"Who is that?"

"Is that Hyunsuk? Is that your boyfriend?"

You sighed. "No. Um, do you want anything to drink? I'll go order it for you." The gears in their brain were visibly turning, and you began to mentally prepare for whatever teasing they'd do. Even though Hyunsuk wasn't really your boyfriend.

"Aw, she wants to go talk to her boyfriend again!" There was an evil grin on their face.

Almost like a perfect mirror, your other friend piped up. "Must be the honeymoon phase; that's so cute."

A little annoyed, you plopped down in your seat. "Go order your own, then. I don't care."

You cared a little bit, actually. Because now they were hounding an innocent boy under the assumption that he’s your mystery boyfriend. However, he seemed to be handling it pretty well. As he was preparing their drinks, he chatted with them, presumably giving bullshit answers to the rapid fire questions from your two best friends.

At one point, one of them turned around and gave you a big thumbs up, letting you know it’s going well. Or that they give their approval. You aren’t entirely sure.

Shortly after the three of you finished your drinks, your friends left. It was then that you decided to apologize once again to the boy wiping down the counter.

“Hey,” you cautiously approached. “Hyunsuk, right? Listen, I am so sorry.”

He lifted his head, making eye contact with you. His eyes were pretty, too. “For what?” A smile slowly etched onto his face. “Oh! For telling your friends I was your boyfriend?”

“No!” You accidentally yelled, clamping your hand over your mouth. “Well, yes, but not really. I just made up a random name and some features. I had no idea someone worked at this very cafe that fit the description. I am so, so sorry for that. And for how my friends reacted.”

The smile slowly grew wider, clearly amused. “It was fun.” He said. “They talked very highly of you, plus I got to brag on myself. You actually seem like a really good person—minus the lying about having a boyfriend—so, could I take you out? On an actual date?”

You nodded.

“Cool!” He frantically searched around, patting the pockets of his apron. He pulled out a pen and reached around you for a square napkin, scribbling something. “This is my number. Um, call me when i get off work, around 5pm? We can talk then.”

Smiling, you looked down at the note.

Hey, I would like it a latte if you called me later. Let’s go on a date. Hyunsuk ***-***-****

"What? No, you've got to let me in!" You tried to push past the burly men, but to no avail. Each time you make an attempt to slip through the barrier they made, you failed. You bounced back like a rubber band that had been stretched to its limit.

Behind that door was your frien–enemy. Your enemy. He's always been and always will be that. Nothing less and nothing more.

In any case, however, he is behind that door. Probably with tubes all over his body or worse, in a coma. No matter what, you needed to be in there.

So you swallowed your pride, and the inevitable guilt crawling it's way up your throat, and yelled out. "I'm his fiancée!"

Heads turned to stare at you, both glaring and empathizing with you. After all, your supposed boyfriend is in a hospital. It was understandable to them. But the eyes on you filled you with more guilt and you just wanted to cower in shame.

Lowering your voice, you whispered. "Please. Please, let me see him."

With a deep sigh, they stepped aside. You rushed through the door, away from all of the prying eyes, and closed it immediately behind you.

"My fiancée, huh?"

"Oh, shut up." Placing your hand over your heart, you turned to face him. "I thought you were hurt."

He points to the bandage on his forehead, widening his eyes. "I am hurt!" Seeing the unfamiliar look on your face, he dropped his teasing tone. "It's just a few scratches. I'm okay."

All too cautiously, you tiptoed closer to his bed. "Is this because of me?" Your fingers lifted up, ghosting over every bandage you could see on his body. "Is this because we argued? And you drove off mad?"

Changmin's own hand grasped yours. "No," your gaze locked on his. "it's not because of you. I didn't crash because of you."

"You promise?"

His breath hitched. Promise? Why are you making him promise now? Do you actually care, or is it guilty conscience eating you from the inside out? Still, he wrapped his pinky around your own, held out, waiting for his answer.

"Promise." The relief on your face was fleeting. The guilt from the possibility of it being your fault dissipated, but you still felt bad that he ended up hurt at all. No matter who was at fault. “I got a call from my mom.”

You stayed silent.

“She just– she started yelling at me and I got really pissed.” He didn’t make eye contact with you. “The way she treated me is the reason I left, and the reason our family ripped into shreds. So it brought back some really tough memories. I guess I blacked out in anger, losing control of my car.”

Slowly, you sat down on the edge of the bed. Your soft hand grabbed his, holding it in your grasp. Entire demeanor softened, you finally looked at him like a person, rather than the person who makes your life a living hell. “So, that’s why you don’t talk about your family…”

It was silent after that. Only the sounds of your breathing and your own heartbeats were ringing in your ear. And, at last, he finally felt seen. Understood. Cared for, even. The thought makes him smile.
