Oxford!Teslen Headcanons

Intro It's always been my personal belief that Helen and Nikola met first at Oxford before the Five formed, probably bonding over the fact that they were both outcasts (due to her being a woman and him being an immigrant) who happened to share a love of science. Nikola was so happy to finally have A Real Friend!!! who wouldn't Edison him or treat him like a curious oddity or screw him over in any particular way, so he got too attached and was sort of (okay, maybe a lot, I wouldn't be surprised if he had rejection sensitivity and just hid it well) miffed when Helen brought the others into their circle. Re: this post I don't think he'd had much experience with how friendships actually work, so he was probably scared she'd stop caring about him once she started hanging out with John, James, and Nigel. I'd like to think that on some level present!Helen is aware of this, so it's one of the many reasons she indulges him even when she knows he's up to something. Causing trouble is how he gets her attention - it's his calling card/roundabout request to spend time with her. For someone who can be very blunt to the point of insensitivity, he's very bad at directly stating that he's bored and/or lonely and just wants to see her. It requires too much emotional vulnerability for him to admit that upfront. Will gets frustrated because he actually knows how to communicate normally and doesn't understand why Nikola is the way he is. But I think Helen gets where it's coming from, so she's always giving him some kind of leeway even if she has to clean up his messes on a recurring basis. Anyway, since we're on the subject, here's a compilation of randomly specific Oxford headcanons:

-They spend a ton of time at the Bodleian Libraries. Helen is actually there to do research - Nikola is there to be a little sh!t and get lost in the shelves. This happens on a regular basis and she always has to go search for him. Half the time she finds him back out in the main courtyard talking to the pigeons. At first she's not sure why he wanders off so much, but she eventually learns that he can't sit still for too long because it's too boring for him. He needs to move, go outside, and/or be tinkering with something to really concentrate on his work. After that she starts packing him a little pouch of breadcrumbs to take with him to their study sessions so he can take breaks and feed the pigeons whenever he needs to.

-Punting on the river is a favorite pastime of theirs on days when the weather is good. But there was an incident during which Nikola got distracted and accidentally capsized them. Helen doesn't let him row for a long time after that, much to his chagrin. Eventually she lets up, but she makes sure to keep him focused so there's less danger of history repeating itself. -They like to attend concerts together, but sometimes if the weather is warm they just stand outside the Sheldonian Theatre listening to the music while Nikola (again) feeds his pigeons. -They love to visit the Botanic Garden, either to take walks, have picnics, or study when it's too stuffy inside. This is actually where they first met. It was a chance encounter by one of the benches while, yes, Nikola was feeding pigeons (he really loves his pigeons okay 😂). Ever since then it has been "their" bench, and they frequently visit it to sit together. When their time at Oxford is coming to a close, they agree to meet there every year (a la Will and Lyra in HDM) on the anniversary of their first meeting. This continues on for the next century or so, even after Nikola's "death." Once Helen has established the New Sanctuary, they visit the surface to keep up the bench tradition for old time's sake.
