Going Crazy about Genetics in Fiction

I had to learn genetics to do a hobby of mine that was VERY involved with genetics (if you're curious, look up Siamese Satin Rabbits genetics. Shit's crazy).

As such I've developed a very big attachment to genetics and enjoy making my brain think about characters in fiction and their genetics. Especially when it comes to making up characters to fit in fantastical worlds. ESPECIALLY when it comes to making up fanchildren for characters who have been aged up.

Anyways I spent time on planning out some Psychonauts characters that we know the families of, Mainly for the reason of me designing my OCs: Holly Aquato-Zanotto, Cetus Lapid Zanotto-Aquato, Tansy Martindale, and Gabriel Zanotto (Can be read as masc or feminine). Their designs are not in this, but I promise to get there!

So, all of the Aquatos except Raz have a very slim eye shape, which included Donatella and Augustus. This means that the slim eye shape is most likely going to be a gene that is dominant. Raz is the ONLY one with the circular eye gene, meaning that he should probably fall under a double recessive.

The Aquato kids have the genotype- Dion - S? Frazie - S? Razputin - cc Mirtala - S? Queepie - S?

The eye color... OH BOY THE EYE COLOR. So Donatella has a phenotype of blue, making her genetics as bb bb. Eye color is on two different alleles, with the first "b"s predicting if brown will show up or not. Due to the fact that NONE of the Aquatos having the purple eyes of Augustus, it is assumed that the purple eyes that Augustus has is on the same allele. It would be highly unlikely if we were substitute the Purple eye phenotype on the Brown eyes phenotype because then we would get genotypes that look like this -

At least 50% (2 or 3/5 of the Aquato siblings) should have the purple eyes if it interacts with the eye gene. There would also be only ONE or two who have green eyes while the other(s) would have blue eyes.

Having the GEY allele work as some sort of triangle could work, with the Purple gene being covered by blue, blue covered by green, and green being covered by purple. This leads to the genotypes looking like THIS -

Now you COULD say that "oh Augustus's genotype IS green he just wears contacts/he has a mutation/it's fiction-" To that I say "I am having fun overanalyzing genotypes."

Augustus COULD have some sort of extension through the modification gene. The modification gene only interacts with the green eye gene, forming the hazel eye phenotype. But because we know that Lili and Truman have Hazel eyes, we know that Augustus's genes would have made a modification gene activate his eyes to becoming hazel. Augustus is the only one who could possibly carry the green eye gene, so he can't be carrying a modification gene.

Seriously we have- Pomade with a particular shark fin part of the hair that won't adhere to the slick-back look, Whatever Frazie has going on, Sasha Nein inspired look from pomade that was stolen from the older brother, Extreme braids, And single sprig of hair.

Donatella is also very stylized, making it hard to know if she has straight or curly hair. Augustus has enough hair that it has some textured curl in it, so we know he has the genotype of curled hair which is the C gene.

Donatella has clearly brown hair, and Augustus leans brown as well. Because of this, the genotype both have should be Rr, leading to the diversity we see with the kids. Rr is a darker ginger color, with the brighter gingers being rr.

There is ALSO the fact that the Aquatos have all 5 fingers, when some characters have 4 meaning that their genetics at the very least look like this -

We do not know if 5 fingers is dominant or recessive, and we can't go off of memory vaults in one considering how inconsistent those are when it comes to finger count.

Now for the Zanotto Family who we have less information on because we only know ONE parent. (But that makes it all the more fun to make a Lili parent).

Both Truman and Lili have slim eyes. Since I declared this a dominant gene, Lili and Truman COULD be hiding the circular eye gene, but since there are no other characters that are related to them to show their gene pool, we only know that Lili for sure has the Slim Eye gene.

This is where we get into a lot of fun. Since Lili has hazel eyes (not amber or brown), She has not only the Brown Eye Gene, but also the Green Eye Gene AND a Modification Gene that allows the Hazel to be seen. Due to the way Hazel eyes work, we know that at the very least, Lili has to have the recessive genes from both Truman and a second parent.

While we cannot figure out who gave her the genes she needs, we can infer her genotype based on the usual for hazel eyes because it is so specific.

Lili's genotype is - bbG?Mm

Next up, hair. Truman has very wavy hair so he has the mix between the Curled gene and the non-curled gene that gives straight hair. If we were to judge Lili's hair as it was, I would say it seems wavy, however she does have a cowlick/curled bang that might show her hair is curly just not used to dealing with the amount of hair causing the weight of the hair in general get rid of the natural curl.

The color of Lili's hair seems to be dyed, but for this exercise I'm just saying that she's got red hair. This would mean that Truman, who has brown hair, would need to have a recessive and dominant gene, and Lili's other parent would need to give her a recessive gene.

And the Psychonauts exclusive genetic thing that makes me pull my hair out- the finger gene. Truman has 5, Lili has 4, and we don't know if the 5 or the 4 is the dominant gene. Families that do have disparity like the Booles, we don't get to see the parents of, and we can't trust memory vaults.

NOW I HAVE AND HERE'S MY RANKING FOR THE GAMES I'VE EXPERIENCED

DDS 1 & 2 - The games I come back to the best. If SMT is about the choices humanity makes that is a constant cycle, and Persona is about the mindscapes of people affecting one another, DDS 1 & 2 is about what makes someone human and the choices one makes to affect one another. HELL YES. I can tell you ALL about the Embryon characters. I want to read the novels so bad.

SMT IV - The game that I was introduced to first! Always a soft spot for it in my heart. OH GOODNESS THE IDEAS IT HAS. Follow the Angels for a predictable, orderly loop that will always have Chaos before being overwritten once again. Follow the Demons for the chaos until the strong establish order once again. Follow the White to try to erase the loop entirely. Follow Humanity to fight for the right for ALL humans to live, including those who are deemed "unclean" by the Angels or "weak" by the demons.

SMT V - This one is the one I'm most excited to get (I hope to buy Vengeance), and I absolutely adore the idea of humanity's choice being the one that fuels the Nahobino. A fight for the Christian God's Choice, versus the Gods who you grow attached to like Amanozako, Aogami, Hyataro... and then the choice of humanity making for themselves to destroy all Gods and Demons... UGH IT'S SO GOOD.

Persona 3 - Definitely a stronger end boss idea as well as a cast. You can show me one of the Persona 3 characters and I know off the bat their relationship with the others.

Persona 4 - GOD I LOVE THE AESTHETICS. But the characters don't jump out to me as much besides the main character, Nanako and Teddy. Also one of the best villains I've seen.

Opinion on the Shin Megami Tensei/Persona series?

Wherever there is a square, it's usually (but not always) rounded off; little to no shading; only coloring things that would be black; thin outlines (Though that might just be because of the fact you use greylead)

So, according to you and one other person my art style signs are

rounded shapes

rare for coloration and shading

thin, rough outlines

So in opposite for that it would be

Sharp shapes, or sticking to shapes

COLOR

Thick outlines.

Do I draw Raz and Lili with human proportions so that way I can draw my idea better or do I keep with their Psychonauts proportions when they're kids so they're recognizable OR do I draw the pose and then add in the flares for my future AU designs that I have in my brain but not on paper yet OR do I just use my future designs in general and make it so that way the pose is exaggerated OR-

maybe this is why???? That an author can spend hours (if not days or weeks or months) on something, have 1,800 people read it, and only have THREE people willing to take a few extra seconds out of their day to comment. Not even something as simple as “thanks for sharing” or “second kudos” or “❤️”

I’m not the internet police. You decide what you do with your time. Just don’t be surprised if the result is that creators leave your fandoms. I’m not writing to scream into the void.
