“You’re freezing! Are you that nervous?” he asked when our hands accidentally touched.
“N-no. It’s not that!” I said as I let out a nervous—or more like a forced—laughter. “They’re just normally cold.” I added.
“You must have a warm heart, then!”
“How did you come with that conclusion?” I asked, confused.
“My mom once said that people with cold hands have a warm heart. Aren’t you?”
“Believe me, I don’t.” I said as I rubbed my hands in my already crumpled skirt.
“And my mom also said not to trust someone easily when they said ‘Believe me’” He added, laughing. He laughed, and I swear even if I hated my mother and how I swore that I’d never believe anything that came out of her mouth, but at that time, I could hear her voice in the back of my mind saying, “You know, the easiest way to fall for someone is through their laughter.” How I wish she was wrong, like she always did.
“So, what songs are you going to play?” He asked me.
“Beethoven Sonata Op. 13—“
“Let me guess! The second movement? Adagio Cantabile?” He cut me.
“Uh, no. Rondo, the third movement.” I corrected him.
“Wow. But that’s like, so fast?”
“Well, I practiced?”
“Of course, you did.”
“And what will you play?”
“I thought you’d never ask.” He said, laughing. Again. Just why did he have to laugh a lot. “Chopin’s Waltz Op. 64 no. 2!” He said, excitingly.
“Isn’t that what Jay Chou played in the movie? What’s the title again?”
“Secret? Yep, it is!”
“And you said mine was so fast? Yours even faster!”
“Well, I practiced?” He said, mimicking me.
“Very funny.” I said monotonously.
“I haven’t even get to know your name and you’re insulting me already.”
“So?”
“So, what’s your name?”
“Mare.”
“Although you didn’t ask, mine’s Soonyoung.”
We spent the next 10 minutes talking about how amazing Jay Chou was in Secret and how we both watched the movie more than twice, just because. And before we both realized, the person before me had exited the exam room, which means that it was my turn then.
“I really want to hear you play once.” He said before I got up.
“If we meet again, then.”
“Good luck, Mare!”
“You too, Soonyoung.”
