It kinda bugs me the countless times i had to correct people because they thought the Brazilian dubs (minus DtM and Fusion) are like the American ones, when the LatAm/Dub are more an adaption from the Japanese one. I remember some interview or article about Digimon (in Brazil) that the Rede Globo (a TV Station) got Digimon to get ratings, and they dubbed directly from Japanese, unlike to Pokemon BR dub which is from the 4Kids/American one.
This explains why when I watch either JP version w/ subs or the BR dub there's minimal changes like names or accents, the rest of the scene or even the whole episode is closer to JP.
But it kinda makes me quite upset when people say "dub" and forget not all dubs are American. And when people keep believing like, every dub followed the American one is quite tiring, y'know... I think it must be the same for SEA English dub fans but worse than my case.
So when i'm referring to dubs I also specify which country i'm talking about -- BR dub or US dub as example.
This is generally why I don't like to assume that someone is working with the American English dub version of things just because they're using the names that came from it, because although that's true in a large majority of cases, there are also a lot of dubs that translated directly from the Japanese script but still used those dub names. In fact, although the high dominance of English in the Western world makes the American English dub a dominant de facto standard for Digimon localization in the West, if we're just counting the sheer number of dubs out there, there are probably more that are closer to the Japanese script then there are based on the American English one. (So far I know of the Israeli one being in the latter category, but I can't think of any others I know of off the top of my head.) The exception is Digimon the Movie, which was directly based off the English script in most territories it was dubbed in (probably for logistics reasons).
This is also kind of what I mean when I say that the American English dub has permeated discourse originally intended for the Japanese version (and things based off of it). The Japanese version of Adventure and 02 never got subtitles until around 2009, resulting in almost a decade where the a good chunk of the fanbase was perpetuating the myth that "the American English dub didn't change much", whereas those who grew up with other dubs were either feeling a little gaslighted from hearing people describing a version of the series they never remembered or getting whiplash ("I don't understand why so many people exaggerate the nonexistent Takeru-Hikari-Daisuke love triangle," etc.), disputes over whether certain things in the series really happened or not, and testimonies from people who didn't know about the localization circumstances and got extreme whiplash as to "why The Movie has such different writing from the actual series". There were people who were basically working from the Japanese version at the time based on one of the non-American dubs and could testify that they remembered a very different series from what most of the English-speaking fans were talking about, but their testimony on the situation constantly got dismissed because the "it didn't change much" myth was so pervasive. Things were straightened out a little more once the Japanese version was subbed and more people were able to see the changes for themselves, but said increase in awareness is going really, really slowly, and I think people really tend to underestimate how much of a perhaps unintentional influence that dub has had on discussion of the Japanese version because of how much it defined discourse for almost a decade. Even recently, there was something circulating on Twitter with an American English dub Davis quote that weirded out anyone who wasn't familiar with that dub because of how incredibly out of character that would be for Daisuke, even to the point of getting comments "well now I understand why so many Americans hate him," but others still wouldn't believe you and would play devil's advocate or accuse you of exaggerating if you brought up how significant that difference was, because of how accepted as truth that myth has become.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story joined the ranks of other beloved sports comedy films like Caddyshack, Kingpin, and The Sandlot in 2004. Led by movie stars Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, this flick boasted an impressive cast of other famous faces, including an unrecognizable Missi Pyle as Fran Stalinovskovichdavidovitchsky
This mid-2000s classic centers on Peter LaFleur’s Average Joe’s Gym and its ongoing rivalry with the neighboring fitness chain Globo Gym, owned by White Goodman. When Average Joe’s faces foreclosure and demolition, Peter enters the Dodgeball Championships in Las Vegas with a team full of misfits to earn enough money to save his business from White. Standing in Peter’s way is White’s team of elite players, including the “Romanovian” dodgeball champion Fran.
Even those readers who can quote Dodgeball word-for-word may not have recognized the gorgeous actress behind Fran, who underwent a major transformation in her portrayal of the scene-stealing character via brunette side buns, a fake mole, a unibrow, and bad teeth.
However, in real life, Pyle is a blonde bombshell and prolific on-screen talent, so chances are you’ve seen her other work.
As a major player in film and television, 46-year-old Pyle is a hilarious, go-to character actress in Hollywood. According to her IMDb page, she’s accumulated an astounding 170 credits to her name over the last two decades. Some of her other notable gigs include appearances in films like Galaxy Quest and Anchorman, as well as appearances on the small screen on shows like Friends, Frasier, and Soul Man.
And she shows no signs of slowing down. Besides returning for season 2 of the hit YouTube series Impulse, she’s already scheduled to appear in at least six films and TV movies in 2019, including Deported, Ma, and Ghosting.
During an interview with The A.V. Club in 2016, Pyle revealed that she went the whole nine yards when auditioning for her fan-favorite Dodgeball character.
“I drew on eyebrows and didn’t wear any makeup, just bright red lipstick. I think I drew a mole on. […] I looked so ridiculous.”
While the filming experience was “a lot of fun,” Pyle went on to admit that her costume made her feel self-conscious about her looks.
“I was also so unattractive in that movie. I had the fake teeth. It was hard because all those dodgeball tournament scenes — you know, getting extras for a scene like that — a lot of extras were from halfway houses or work-release programs where you have to put in hours. Every time I’d come out, people would be like, ‘Ugh!'”
The uncomfortable realities of movie magic aside, Pyle not only looked nothing like Fran in real life, she also unfortunately lacked the character’s mad dodgeball skills. On the first day of practice, the actress threw out her neck, then got drilled in the face with a dodgeball. She said,
“It was very humiliating. […] I’ve always considered myself an athletic person, but I think I’m just somebody who likes to try athletics. Because I’m tall, so you’d think I’d be better than I am, but I’m not necessarily that great.”
Dodgeball was a commercial and critical success. Grossing $167.7 million worldwide, the film scored a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site’s critical consensus reading
“Proudly profane and splendidly silly, Dodgeball is a worthy spiritual successor to the goofball comedies of the 1980s.”
While rumors of a long-awaited sequel have been circulating since 2013, the future of Dodgeball 2 unfortunately remains unclear. However, comedy fans were treated to a surprising reunion of sorts in June 2017, when multiple cast members —including Stiller, Vaughn, Justin Long, and Christine Taylor — joined forces for a charitable competition through Omaze to benefit the Stiller Foundation. According to its website,
“[The charity] seeks to promote the well-being of children worldwide through initiatives that support education.”
Also reprising her popular on-screen alter ego was Missi Pyle herself as Fran!
As the sage Dodgeball saying goes, if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball, and if you’re Missi Pyle, you can deliver a stand-out performance even in disguise.

URBAN BRAZIL AND ITS MEDIA LANDSCAPE:
Tumblr media
Brazilian Flag pictured swaying in the wind. “Amazon-Brazil-Flag-01” by samsokwoo is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 L
Considered one of the most influential countries in South America, Brazil constitutes as one the biggest democracies. With a diverse population, brazil has a 50% social media presence amongst its population- one of the largest in the world. According to BBC News, by 2017, 139 million Brazilians were online. Additionally, to understand how both political and media outlets can influence such a large population, it is essential to know some of the significant media outlets in todays digitized society. (BBC News. 2018).
 The Press:
According to the Guardian, a news outlet that has been critical of Brazils current president, Jair Bolsonaro, is Estado. Estado is considered a conservative news outlet founded in 1865 and has been receiving backflash from the Bolsanaro administration due to recent allegations and smear campaigns against one of their journalist. Following suit, in a recent study done by Statista, O’ Globo, another leading news outlets in Brazil, sold over 314,044 copies. (Statista. 2018)
Media Ownership in Brazil is highly dominated by the market, which runs TV and radio outlets for pay. Additionally, media groups within the country receive up to 4 percent of its annual revenue from government funding. As noted in the article by the BBC, “Freedom House says many private media are owned by individuals with political connections, who use the outlets to promote their interest.” (BBC News. 2018). Some of the many powerhouse media conglomerates include Globo, Estadao, and Folha De S.paulo. Every single one of these major news outlets carries immense influence amongst the population.
 Social Media:
As a young student living in the United States, I have grown accustomed to social media norms and have been conditioned to view and interpret the information as the truth. However, I never understood how other individuals around the world use social media and how it translates to their public sphere.
In Brazil, with 50 % of the population owning some smartphone or digital device, it is no surprise that they are the second leading country with the usage through social Media Platforms. In a recent study administered by the Reuters Institute, “Brazilians remain some of the heaviest users of social media in the world and usage of all the top social and messaging brands has gone up significantly again over the last year. Growth was particularly strong among Instagram (+10), WhatsApp (+5), and YouTube (+8) users.” (Reuters Institute. 2019).
While social media has its benefits, it can also be credibly influential to its audience. An article published by the New York Times titled, “How YouTube Radicalized Brazil.” Authors Max Fisher and Amanda Taub illustrate the influence this social media giant had during Jair Bolsonaro political campaign.
Fisher and Taub argue that YouTube search and recommendation system appears to have systematically diverted users to far-right and conspiracy channels in Brazil.  (Fisher & Traub. 2019). Additionally, Fisher and Taub report that members of the far-right party give credit to social media giants such as YouTube, who empowered and promoted viewer recommendation. Without this new search engine technology- their movements would have never established and risen to what it is now. (Fisher & Traub. 2019).
The status of press freedom and challenges of journalism:
Bolsonaro’s relationship with the media has been somewhat negative throughout his tenure as both as candidate and president. Although Bolsonaro has stated he respects and vows to stay committed to freedom of the press in an audio message leaked to the media, he referred to the most significant media outlets, Grupo Globo, as his enemy. (Huffington Post. 2018)
While Brazil’s constitution guarantees freedom of the press, there is still a significant threat to media outlets in Brazils current political climate. In research done by Reporters without Border, Brazil ranks as “one of the most violent countries for the media, and journalist are often killed in their connection to their work.”  Additionally, the report also argues that while constitutionally, political leaders cannot restrict access to the press, restrictive laws are still used to silence journalist and media outlets. (Reporters without Borders. 2019).
While media outlets continue to face hardship within their federal government, many also face backlash from their population. Based on the Edelman Trust Index, Brazil ranks in 49 in the distrust scale in the 2019 general population category. (2019 Edelman Trust Barometer) .
  Media and Populism:
"The 2018 presidential election and its aftermath have galvanized the Brazilian media. The high political polarization surrounding the poll set the stage for multiple controversies involving not only the candidates but also the way media covered the elections." (Caro. 2019)
The quote above by Rodrigo Caro argues that Jair Bolsonaro was able to polarize Brazilian politics over the use of social mediums to elicit an emotional response from his audience. In a paper titled, “Bolsonaro and Brazil Illiberal Backlash,” by Wendy Hunter and Tim Power, both authors argue that Bolsonaro became well-known through irrelevant backbencher that could provoke opponents and generate controversy. ( Hunter & Power, Pg 9)
As mentioned in the 2019 Media Report by Rhetors institute, throughout the president's campaign, he frequently used social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to announce political offices and roles, as well as forcing the media to change in traditional media coverage. (Caro 2019.)
Currently, Bolsonaro holds 5.3 Million followers on Twitter, the same social media platform he used to denounce French Prime Minister Macron over his feud of humanitarian aid over the Amazon fires.
While the presidential campaign that led to Jair Bolsanaro created lasting political consequences for the country, it also divided and changed the way media platforms identify users and personalize information for years to come.

28 MAR 2019 18:15"LA MIA È LA STORIA DI UN ANTI-CALCIATORE:NON GIOCAVO,NON SEGNAVO,NON TOCCAVO PALLA" ARRIVA IN ITALIA IL FILM SU QUEL "SOLA" DI CARLOS "KAISER" RAPOSO: IN PIÙ DI 20 ANNI HA INDOSSATO OLTRE 10 MAGLIE MA LA PALLA NON L’HA MAI VISTA: "FIRMAVO IL CONTRATTO GRAZIE ALLA PUBBLICITÀ DEI GIORNALI E DEI GIOCATORI AMICI. IN ALLENAMENTO FACEVO SOLO LA PARTE ATLETICA. POI APPENA SPUNTAVA IL PALLONE ACCUSAVO UN DOLORE OPPURE..." 2. A RENATO PORTALUPPI SOFFIAVA LE DONNE FINGENDO DI ESSERE LUI. HA INGANNATO IL PIÙ GRANDE GESTORE DI SCOMMESSE CLANDESTINE DEL BRASILE. "IL MIO HOBBY ERA IL SESSO: ORGANIZZAVAMO ORGE, UNA MALATTIA” - "I LEGAMI CON LA MAFIA CORSA? ERO IL LORO IDOLO”
Iacopo Iandiorio per gazzetta.it
Nomen omen, dicevano i latini.
In realtà vivevo fra Brasile e Corsica”. Ha mai pensato all’Italia? “Quando ero al Gazélec s’era parlato di un interesse del Vicenza, ma poi non se ne fece nulla. Non avevo motivi per andarmene, lì mi amavano tutti”.Magico Kaiser Raposo!

Brumadinho dam: Anger grows towards Brazil mine firm Vale
Media playback is unsupported on your device
Media captionRescuers are searching for hundreds of people, missing after a dam collapse caused a huge mudslide
Senior Brazilian politicians have called for Vale SA to be held to account for last week’s dam disaster, as anger grows towards the mining firm.
Brazil’s Vice-President Hamilton Mourão said those to blame should be punished, and a top prosecutor said executives could be held personally responsible.
Vale, which owns the complex, says safety procedures were followed.
Firefighters say 60 people are now confirmed dead after a sea of mud engulfed a canteen and nearby houses.
Some 192 people have been rescued near the south-eastern town of Brumadinho but nearly 300 are still missing. Rescuers say they are very unlikely to find more survivors.

Image caption In some areas the mud is up to 15m deep
The cause of the dam burst remains unclear.
Shares in Vale, the world’s largest iron ore producer, fell by more than 20% on the Sao Paulo stock exchange on Monday.
Search operations were suspended for hours on Sunday amid fears that a separate dam, also owned by Vale, was at risk of giving way in the area.
What is being said about Vale?
Vice-President Hamilton Mourão, who is standing in for President Jair Bolsonaro as he undergoes surgery, said the government would need to investigate and punish those found responsible for the disaster.
He added that the government would set up a working group to look at the company’s management.
“If there was malpractice, recklessness or negligence on the part of someone inside the company, that person has to answer criminally,” O Globo website quoted him as saying.
Meanwhile top prosecutor Raquel Dodge said it was important to hold the company “strongly responsible”.
The comments came after state prosecutors said they had frozen a total of 11bn reais ($2.9bn; £2.2bn) of assets belonging to Vale.
Brumadinho Mayor Avimar de Melo Barcelos has also criticised authorities in the state of Minas Gerais, which he blamed for poor oversight.

What does the company say?
Vale president Fabio Schvartsman said the company had followed safety recommendations by international experts.
“I followed the technicians’ advice and you see what happened. It didn’t work,” he said in a TV interview.
Mr Schvartsman promised “to go above and beyond any national or international standards… We’ll create a cushion of safety far superior to what we have today to guarantee this never happens again.”
A statement by the company on Sunday said the dam had passed stability tests in June and September of last year. It reiterated that safety at the site had been in accordance with international best practice.
The company also says it has suspended payouts to shareholders and executive bonuses.
What is the latest on the search effort?
Firefighters said 292 employees, contractors and residents were still missing. So far 19 of the 60 dead have been identified.
“After 48 hours of work, the chance of finding [someone] alive is very low,” Col Eduardo Angelo, who is leading the search operation, told relatives of the missing on Monday.
“[But] we’re working with the possibility that we’ll find people alive.”
The dam break caused a sea of muddy sludge to bury the site’s cafeteria where workers were eating lunch, before engulfing nearby houses, vehicles and roads.

Access to the areas is difficult – in some places, the mud is up to 15m (49ft) deep. Search teams have been using helicopters and earth-moving machinery.
“I still have hope,” Nélia Mary Fonseca told the BBC as she waited for details about her husband, Adriano, who worked as a contractor at the site.
An Israeli group of engineers, doctors and members of the navy’s underwater missions unit has joined the efforts.

The 2015 dam disaster in Minas Gerais
Has this kind of thing happened before?
Unlike dams used for water, tailings dams – like that in Brumadinho – are used to store by-products from mining operations.
There have been a number of high-profile disasters involving tailings dams in recent years – and there have been calls, including from the UN, to institute better safety and building regulations around them.
In November 2015, a dam owned by Vale, along with BHP Billiton, burst in Mariana, also in Minas Gerais. It killed 19 people in what was considered Brazil’s worst environmental disaster at the time.
After a lengthy court case, the companies reached a settlement worth at least 6.8bn reais ($1.8bn) with the Brazilian government.
