one amazing thing about the Owl House finale is that it finally contextualized for me one of the central metaphors of the show. Spoilers for the series finale Watching and Dreaming ahead.
we good? no one spoiling themselves? beauty
for a long time now, I thought we had a pretty standard coming-of-age metaphor dichotomized by the show's central antagonists. you've got your protestant witch hunter Belos who introduces a maturity and ugliness to Luz's narrative; he clearly represents a particular, restricting form of adulthood, and just when Belos becomes his most threatening, boom, enter the Collector, Luz's dangerously naïve inner child to ruin all her development on the Boiling Isles. Seems simple enough
what I didn't anticipate was just how specific and personal their roles in the story actually are to Luz once you have the full context from the series finale
look again
this story - this whole series - is about the grief that a neurodivergent kid experienced at a young age, introducing the cruelty of loss and adulthood before she was ready to handle it. and, how to reclaim a more whole understanding of herself as she rebuilds her life with people who get her
Belos is designed to infect the titan carcass like a disease. a cancer. it's super goddamn significant that the titan is King's dad (King, who became Luz's younger brother). they set up Belos not just to be another fascist kids' cartoon villain (although yeah, he do be doing some of that), but to specifically become a force that oppressed the weirdness from the one place that understood Luz. the Iles. the dad. And by the end of the story, Belos's goopy body-horror isn't just for show, he's just like the cancer or other terminal disease that took Luz's dad from her
he's the thing Luz hasn't processed in season 1 that comes in at the end like a warning. he's the threat that forces Luz to grapple with her own humanity, feeling somehow (often completely unjustifiably) harmful to those around her, through the grief she doesn't want to be a burden or the weirdness (neurodivergence) others don't understand. he's the force that says there is something wrong with you, Luz, give in to your grief, this is what you can't face. this is the lie you've been telling to those closest to you: that you're okay
then you have the Collector. (notable that he's a collector, and we see Luz's mom and dad had quite the collection of nerdy memorabilia)
the Collector is the child too young to understand death. Too young to understand consequences, or why their playmates don't feel like playing anymore with someone so weird and maybe a bit too involved in their own world. The Collector is Luz's inner child, that kid we see right before the "worst week ever" — the one who didn't and couldn't understand what was about to happen even as it was going down. unapologetically weird, a bit destructive and short-sighted, but wholly colourful, wholly themselves. that's why the Collector wants to live out Luz's adventures, but without all the depth. just the fun escapist fantasy
but don't think I forgot the internal conflict! :D
because Camila's role also gets an added depth too: Camila was framed at the outset of the series as someone who loved Luz, but wanted her to fit inside a box that she just didn't. later, Luz completely misconstrued her mom's breakdown when she learned that Luz chose to run away. as many people have pointed out by now, Luz misremembers the actual dialogue that Camila says: Camila only wanted her daughter safe, not to lose her. Luz meanwhile felt like she had to choose to destroy this part of herself, or give up her connection with her mom altogether
but we know now Camila actually deeply relates to Luz. she may not understand Luz's fascination with horrific things like on the boiling isles (very akin to a kid getting more grim hobbies in the wake of a death, like Luz's taxidermy), but she loves Luz for who she is. all of her. she never wanted Luz to change
Luz was the one framing the central conflict of the show as go back to her mom or stay in the boiling isles. Luz was the one who felt like she had to punish herself by rejecting the one place where she felt like herself. once Camila realizes what's been going on, and how deeply connected it is to the loss of Luz's dad, she knows Luz is trying to make a "very bad choice for herself." And she won't let that happen (what a great mom!!)
But Luz does have one real choice ahead of her
because of the inner child who once again has to confront death (this time, Luz's own), Luz is able to connect with a father figure, the titan, the one place she feels understood. in the form of a power-up that makes her into a fantasy witch straight out of the Good Witch Azura, the one place she got joy after that huge loss, the titan gives her the strength to face the cancer—a force draining everything good in her life from her and making her question she deserves it in the first place—but only if she can choose herself
and that means choosing happiness, choosing found family, choosing love and friendship and self-discovery in the place she feels most at home! every bond she's forged, everything she's worked for, it all comes down to choosing to face grief and move on in life with weirdos who stick together.
hoot hoot, that's some good metaphor

Water as a motif?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I must say, I find the visuals of Belos corrupting the isles to be surprisingly beautiful; His growths resemble coral, the green invokes seaweed... With the dust specks, the Collector, and String Bean floating by, it really does feel like we’re underwater in these scenes.
Tumblr media
And that makes Luz’s light an interesting contrast; Deep sea light is usually a sign of predation by anglerfish, while coral offer refuge. But in this case, it’s reversed, with the coral being all-consuming, the light freeing and saving lives. Though in this scene, I guess Luz’s light does connotate something negative, in this case her own death.
Tumblr media
Likewise, Belos having a coral motif connects him to the ocean, which... For Titans, the ocean is an interesting place, given it’s associated with the Titan Trappers, who invoke the image of lobster trappers and other types of fishermen. Plundering the seas for prey and trophies, which the Titans end up being, as biblical Leviathans in their own right (It IS the Demon Realm), with the ocean being both their domain and their graveyard. Titan corpses feeding an entire ecosystem built around them is akin to real life whale falls!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hunter drowns at the end of Thanks to Them due to Belos, and water’s association with conformity also occurs in Camila’s dream. The Demon Realm’s oceans are boiling and hazardous, and a portal for human pollution; Hell, Philip even discovered the Water glyph combo!
Tumblr media
What am I getting at here? I dunno. Could just be the general incorporation of thalassophobia. The oceans as a source of nurturing life and even light, but also darkness and death; Beings live naturally within the water, only to have it invaded by outside, land-dwelling forces. Belos is liquidy, so maybe it’s the association of bodies of water as a threat... Witches were historically drowned, after all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But there may be an exception with aerial bodies of water, in this case rain and clouds; The former of which represents the Boiling Isles and ultimately what rejects and does Belos in, while sparing Luz. Human rain is a sign of home, even if initially a tragic signal when Luz returned. Could be the water of the heavens VS the water that lies below.
The Demon Realm is Hell, and they say you burn in it after all... Just maybe not with fire. Maybe Philip is being associated with actual biblical Hell, hence his ties to bodies of water below. Water as hostile to witches is also interesting, because aside from the witch trials, we know the classic tale of the Wicked Witch of the West being melted by water, one of the most iconic associations for witches; And it’s Green Belos’ death that invokes this.

An unnecessary and in-depth analysis of magic colors used in TOH (Part 2):
Part 1 here
Purple:
Darius
Purple is associated with luxury, ambition, independence, mystery, arrogance, and inferiority
Darius is pretty much the embodiment of the color purple based on symbolism. He’s independent, he’s mysterious, he’s arrogant, he likes to live in luxury. He doesn’t act super ambitious but he is a Coven Head so we can assume he is somewhat. And the fact that he’s so competitive with Alador suggests that he may experience feelings of inferiority.
Tumblr media
Magenta:
Amity, Alador, Tibbles, Gavin (possibly Kikimora and Malphas)
Magenta is associated with kindness, character, change, harmony, cooperation, and self respect but also impatience, arrogance and volatility.
Note: Kikimora and Malphas are listed as having purple magic on the wiki page, but it looks more magenta to me and I think that magenta makes more sense for them as well.
Impatience, arrogance and volatility are traits that are shared among these characters for the most part, though with Amity they’re mostly presented early in the show. The positive traits, consequently, have a lot of significance for Amity, who has gone through tremendous development and change over the course of the show. She’s become kinder and has learned to respect herself in a way that her parents couldn’t. She’s invited harmony into her life. If the show wasn’t cut short, I think we would have had a similar (smaller-scale) development for Alador and maybe even the other antagonists; at the very least Alador has taken initiative to change and better himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
White:
Emperors Coven Scouts, Adegast, Detention Monitor, Oracle Teacher
White is associated with purity, innocence, perfection, safety, simplicity, illumination, emptiness, and unfriendliness
This one is interesting. For the Emperor’s Coven, since they are working for Belos, I can see their magic being sort of “sanitized”, void of their own creativity or free will. Similarly, for the teachers, maybe their magic is somewhat restricted when they’re on school grounds. They have to stick to the rules and regulations. For Adegast, maybe the white represents how his true nature/form was “illuminated” in WBW. Note: Jerbo is also listed using white on the wiki page but it actually looks like more of a white green to me, which makes more sense for him.
Tumblr media
Yellow:
Eda, Mattholomule, Luz, Raine, Hunter (flapjack)
Yellow is associated with sunlight, positivity, intellect, creativity, and confidence. Some shades of yellow are also linked to magic and diversity. On the other hand, yellow can be a symbol of deceit, depression, or cowardice.
This one is fascinating to me. Yellow being associated with Luz makes perfect sense, her name literally means light and there’s so much symbolism in the show associating her with light. It also fits well for Eda, who is sort of the personification of magic and diversity, as well as sharing other traits with Luz. Eda and Raine are the only couple to share the same magic color and I think that was very much intentional, they are each other’s light. Hunter switching from red magic to yellow with flapjack must have significance as well. He goes from having every aspect of his life controlled by Belos, to finding a sense of autonomy and confidence in himself. Deceit, depression and cowardice are also all themes that recur for these characters throughout the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now for the odd one out: Mattholomule. This is one of the things that got me interested in the colors in the first place. Matt having the same magic color as Luz, Eda and Hunter? Maybe he will have plot relevance in the next episode? Okay, most likely not. But a girl can dream. He’s definitely shown cowardice and deceit before. And he has a loud (overly-confident) personality. Maybe we will get some other hints of how the color fits him in WAD. Also curiously, Matt is one of the characters shown to use a different magic color at some point (more on that below)
Cyan:
Gus, Lilith, Edric, Emira, Adrian Graye, Titan Trappers, Keeper, Reviewnicorn
Cyan is associated with compassion, clarity, calmness, concentration, and communication. It can also signify narcissism, stress, secrecy, boastfulness. It’s also the opposite of red.
Many of the characters using this color are illusionists. At face value, concentration, clarity and communication are all important traits for illusionists to have. But I think for the twins, the color might also represent their connection and ability to see and understand each other. Likewise, Lilith’s color may be a symbol of her bond with Eda; her character development and how she grew to accept and understand her sister.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Adrian is a talented illusionist but his narcissism blinds him when it comes to really seeing and understanding others. The Reviewnicorn I could also see being somewhat boastful or narcissistic. And the Keeper, in addition to being compassionate and a skilled illusionist is definitely keeping some secrets. What about the Titan Trappers though? Is the blue a symbol of their secrecy? What do you guys think?
Finally, Gus. He really is the embodiment of this color as much as Darius is purple. He’s compassionate and understanding. He’s intuitive and able to see a lot of things that others might miss, even without magic. He’s able to get through to people and to see the good in them when others can’t. At the same time he can also be somewhat boastful and narcissistic himself at times. And we see how much he struggles with pressure and secrecy in particular.
Back to Matt for a minute, he’s seen in this image from the FTF credits using what looks to be cyan magic. Maybe it’s an accident or supposed to represent the use of illusion magic, but I like to think that perhaps it represents a connection to Gus. If you guys know of any other examples of characters switching colors, let me know!

Is Amity a Good Person?
This is not if she's a well written character. A judgement of that is a part of this but the bigger point is just: Is Amity a 'good' person? Does she appear to actually care about others? Does she choose selflessness over selfishness? Etc. etc.
And part of this is going to be subjective. To some people, not being mean is enough to make someone nice. Other people will ask for a bit more, especially out of a fictional character. Hell, you can even see it with most fictional parties. The lancer character who is meant to contrast against the hero is usually a pretty dickish person but you might still call them good because even if they're cursing while doing it, they are still putting their life at risk in order to save a town or the like. Meanwhile, you probably wouldn't call Vegeta a nice person, even by the time of Dragon Ball Super because he is still mostly selfish, even once he's explicitly no longer trying t get stronger regardless of the consequences to others.
So what does Amity do that is actually nice?
...
........
Oh, were you expecting me to start listing things she does? Because I have bad news for you.
See, one hang up I have with going "Amity always wanted to be a good person and so even if she loses her drive, motivation, etc. she gains the personality of a good person," is that Amity doesn't do fucking anything to earn that. She isn't unpleasant. After S1, she isn't trying to murder people or actively bullying people but like... Cool, you upgraded from Mega Bitch to Background character. Why do you claim that's a new personality instead of the death of one?
Because being a 'good person' is actually more complicated than just not being an asshole. Being nice to your friends? Of course you're nice to your friends. You care about them (put a pin in it). Noticing when your partner is in pain and wanting to help them? You supposedly love that person, much like why you might be nice to family, so OF COURSE, you put in a little extra effort.
A good person, at least in a narrative, doesn't need the excuse. They help because it is the right thing to do and then their personality dictates how they go about doing so. Maybe they write wiki pages to share their knowledge in a free way so people can benefit from it. Maybe they help out at a soup kitchen because it gives them a chance to be more directly kind and they have the time for it. Or maybe it's just that when they see someone who is potentially having problems, they risk whatever it may lead to be asking this complete stranger if they're okay.
Amity doesn't do this. In fact, as far as actually giving a shit about anyone other than Luz, she's AWFUL at it. Hunter is her kindest moment to a theoretical stranger in the series but it is still characterized by her being suspicious, judgemental and not giving him a chance until the dude is suicidal and has drawn a dozen parallels between them. Even then, she does it as part of mimicking Luz, at least with the joke she immediately makes of how 'this always works for Luz'. Then you have poor fucking Willow. This is a girl that Amity abused, especially for her powerlessness and helplessness, for YEARS. Amity even knows explicitly why Willow should hate her. What her crimes are. But... Then 'good person' Amity, showing 'care' for her friend, treats her as powerless after having thought she didn't need to do shit to be allowed to come to Willow for advice (Labyrinth Runner and Falls and Follies respectively). That is TOTALLY someone who always just wanted to be a good person and is dedicating themselves to that instead of any of their old dreams and desires.
The only person or thing she puts any effort into post S1 is Luz. She doesn't care about anyone else besides that. Belittle Eda for not focusing on taking of Luz in a tangible way during Eclipse Lake? Check. Feel justified to give marching orders to literally everyone in the house just because she's Luz's girlfriend during that same episode? Check. Including Willow, who she has done NOTHING to make up for at this point? Check. Hell, even further: Not give a fuck about stopping Boscha while Luz could just step out of the splash zone around Willow during Winging it Like Witches? OF COURSE NOT. She only gets involved once Boscha's only focus is going to be on Luz.
That. Is not. A good person. Not if the only people who matter are those she deems are worthy of mattering. Changing from actively crushing those other people to just being entirely indifferent to them and their plights is not as a big of a deal as you all seem to think it is, not for it to become the only defining trait of a character's personalities and motivations.
Are they evil? Bad? No. But anything beyond nice is giving such a character a LOT of credit. A rogue isn't Robin Hood just because they only steal from the rich. If they're still lining only their pockets and the pockets of their friends with their thievery, they're still selfish and self centered, they just have code. That's called Lawful Neutral, or Lawful Evil, in D&D for a reason. Not any form of good.

Hey ummm, if you're still taking requests, can i request a fic where hunter is a vampire x reader, maybe a female reader or gn doesn't matter, maybe smut? If you're okay with that ofc
You can ignore this is you want to 🥲
HUNTER WITTEBANE X FEM!READER [NSFW HEADCANNONS: VAMPIRE]
Awww, you’re so sweet! And as a nerd for mythology and folklore I can assure you this was burden my love ❤️
Tumblr media
[TW: EXTREMELY GENTLE FEEDING, I DON’T DO EXTREME BLOODPLAY BUT GENTLE VAMPIRE FEEDING IS EXCUSED.]
-Remember when Luz called him an, ‘bad but sad’ boy, yeah?
-That would only increase tenfold if he was a vampire, I wouldn’t call him the brooding tortured type like good ol’ Edward Cullen over here, but he’d have even more deep rooted fears in him.
-So afraid of biting you, bloodlust thrums under his skin constantly but after years of training he’s got a pretty good hold on it.
-You’d be his favourite smell, he would never bite you, ever, even if you asked him (at least, at first) he would never bare his fangs for you, though he couldn’t control breathing in your sweet smell.
-The only time he’d ever give into the temptation (for the first time at least, someone as sexy as you is hard to deny) is when you’d ask him all pretty in the throes of passion.
-Here’s how it’d start:
-Slowly sinking inside of you, he’d lay gently on top of you so his nose buries itself in your neck, guilt always grew in his chest but he couldn’t help himself, he breathed in your lovely scent.
-It wasn’t just your blood though, his senses were so enhanced he could realise things mortals and witches couldn’t, he could smell your shampoo, soap, natural scents and the lightest sheen of sweat.
-It was all yours, so he loved it.
-You bucked into him with a soft cry, running your fingers through his blond hair, your breathe hitches and the sound booms in his sensitive ears, as does the beat of your heart.
-Your moans and gasps get him harder than anything else, knowing he’s actually making you feel good turns on not only his body, but his entire being, down to his worn heart.
-He’d circle his hips gently, pushing in deeper, careful to not hurt you but knowing you wanted him to speed up a bit.
-You pushed against him, eager to be close as possible, and that meant pushing your skin right against his nose, and he (much to his embarrassment) almost let out a loud moan at your scent.
-Your blood was so sweet, he loved every layer of you, but that smell haunted him, he didn’t sleep, but if he did, he knows he would dream of that, of this,
-You writhing gently underneath him as he finally buried himself to the hilt, your ambrosia getting so warm under your flushed skin.
-Of course you noticed how he reacted, the way he’d wrap his arms around you and lay his head in your neck, how he’d hide his face in your collarbone, and there was something you wanted, craved.
-“Hunter..” you scratched gently at his scalp to get his attention, “P-Please bite me.”
-That made him freeze, the gently thrusts that were gaining momentum stopping entirely much to your libido’s disappointment.
-He’d pull his face out of your neck, and despite the flush on his cheeks and the heavy lidded look in his gaze, you could see the panicked confusion plaguing his features.
-“W-What do you mean, why would you want that?” He’d sputter out, and you felt embarrassment start to rise in you, but you got to see it to the end, my boy.
-You continued to lightly scratch his scalp, and despite his alarm he still melted under the ministrations, he always loved when you’d touch his sensitive scalp.
-“I-I want you to bite me because..” you bit your lip, and noticed the way his eyes would flicker to the sight, “I want to feel close to you, please Hunter, I won’t pressure you-“
-How long has it been since Hunters given into anything? His temptations were pulled from him by Belos, and although he’d never give in to the feral bloodlust still hiding inside him,
-How bad would it be to take just a small, small amount? He knew it was the need talking, and he felt so guilty, not just for your sweet ambrosia, but the need in the way his hips kept trying to buck into your warmth.
-You we’re afraid you upset him, he put his face back in your neck, nuzzling against the skin slightly, “..You can scratch or hit me if you need me to stop, I will, I promise.”
-You felt your stomach twist in excitement, and anticipation when he kissed at your neck, choosing a spot and sucking gently in warning.
-His fangs elongated, his pupils expanding in hunter, and he ran his teeth over the spot once before slowly sinking his fangs in.
-The moan you let out was small and sweet, the sting feeling so good, especially when his hips started up again.
-When vampire drank from their victims, their fangs stayed buried in the skin to push out as much blood as possible, but he didn’t do that.
-He left a gentle bite on your skin, before pulling away and running his tongue over the bloody mark, like he was savouring a fine wine on his tongue, the moan he lets out is almost obscene.
-Even when he wasn’t acting like himself, the more vampiric side of him taking over, he couldn’t resist being gentle.
-You spent a long moment like that, him pumping into you with as much gentleness as he lapped at your bite mark, reviling in your moans and gasps.
-You tasted so good, like caramel on his tongue, the drops he licked at like a dog tasting like heaven, he knew he’d hate himself later for this,
-But for now, he wanted to enjoy the moment, your taste and the way you’d buck desperately before finishing around him.

I cant believe I gone this far into the Caleb fic without realizing flapjack isn't present lol, when do you plan on bringing the best boy into the story? Is he gonna be Caleb's emotional support birb ? What's you headcannons on the lil rascal ?
I want Evelyn to give him some palistrom wood, once she hears of his passion for woodwork. :)
I want Evelyn and Caleb to encourage one another in areas where the other is a little insecure.
Some character arc thoughts: SO SPOILERS
Caleb starts off as a depressed pessimist who feels stuck in life and powerless. Like this is all he'll ever be and that there's no point in having dreams when they're unrealistic.
His dream being to tell stories, make figurines for those stories (as he can't write or read) and give the figurines to people who feel touched by the story the figure is in. He wants to bring his own kind of magic to people, the kind that can bring people out of the dark headspace he's in - which are stories of various types. Stories helps him escape and feel like there are good things after a hard journey - that then, perhaps, the same is true for him.
He dismisses his dream because he feels like it's just.. not true. He's just being a dreamer.
Subsequently, of course, Evelyn thinks that sounds a lot like how Palistrom carvers work, a profession that's very scarce in the demon realm as it takes someone with a lot of heart and imagination (and willingness to give away that love) to create unique palismen.
Caleb needs someone to unchain him from the ground he's fasten himself too out of fear of floating too far into the sky. He's allowed to fly.
And Evelyn,
I haven't had the chance to go into her yet, as this story is mostly (right now) told from Caleb's POV.
But Evelyn is a powerful witch and very talented. People often say she's wasting her time doing research on something as useless as the human realm. That her potential isn't reached. She's an extrovert, who wants friends, but they take advantage of her for being powerful and well-known for that. (Kinda like Gus!)
She has no genuine friends. But she cares so much, and means so well, and keeps getting let down.
I want for Evelyn to make Caleb realise he's not powerless, that his dream isn't silly or even unachievable. That he's allowed, actually, to break away from the strict rules. He can be the flamboyant exccentric who tells stories if he wants to be.
I want for Caleb to show Evelyn that she's not just her talents. He has no context of why or how she's "wasting her potential", he thinks she's amazing. Not because she's poweful, but because her heart inspires him. To him, she's fun, she's free, he likes her in places where others find her annoying (but feigns not to be to stay in her favour). Caleb is forward with her, has been from the start. She needs someone to grab her arm and ground her a bit, not to chide her, but because they care and know that she'll be upset if it doesn't go the way she thought.
They level each other that way. :)
And I want them to have fun with each other, be playful and snarky, honest and... Because of how they met and started, they have no reason to not be honest.
SO, AS FOR FLAPJACK!!!
I wanted him to carve him, after Caleb dares to open up a bit more.
And because he's a human, like Luz (and I guess Hunter??), he's limited on what kinda magic he can do. So flying, mainly, and maybe zip-zaps. But to him, that's incredible.
And also terrrifying. Because that makes him a witch. But also, now he has a buddy he can babble on and on with.
"NO DON'T, AGH, STOP! You can't follow me around! People will think you're a familiar!! ... Actually, do you know what kinda flowers Ev likes?? Can you make flowers? No? Hm.. Help me find flowers then."
Kinda like how Hunter panics at first and is all SHOO SHOO and then ten seconds later babbles his heart out to the bird.
Flapjack becomes one of those emotional support animals. lol.

Note
well lolly , since theres only six days left can we get some super wrong or super right predictions from you?
I'm a little late (4 days now!!) Anyways I'm not good at predictions. Here's some silly little wishes instead. I know I'm not getting any of this but I can dream. (Most of these copy n pasted directly from discord.)
- Gus casting a huge terrifying illusion around everything as he gives Belos one long "reason you need to repent for your sins" speech. He walks towards him, shifting into all the people he's hurt over the centuries. Then he turns into Evelyn, then Caleb. I want Gus to be Belos' worst nightmare basically.
- I've seen takes that Gus being the key against Belos and all the grimwalker lore wouldn't fit and has nothing to do with his arc and it shouldn't be his responsibility. But like
Gus has spent his whole life being deceived for being trusting and gullible. Gus going up against a man who has built his life on lies and deception. Oh it would fuck. And all the similarities between Gus and the Collector. Like this part of the story is practically tailored for Gus to slip into. If you know how to write it. And I just hope they know how to write it
Ohhhhh I know Gus already loathes Belos as much as anybody but ohhhhh. He learns the Collector lore and then turns to Belos, eyes glowing like "You lied to him. You said you were his friend but you lied to him."
- I'm not an Amity Blight expert so I'm probably far off. But I've been thinking about it. I'm wondering if maybe her puppetification is JUST her, rather than it being all of the kids. And maybe Odalia is directly responsible.
And considering Amity is overdue for her ✨️Moment✨️ I'm wondering if this might be it. There's a running theme in the owl house when it comes to puppets and puppet masters, and this is directly linked to the characters who suffered abuse and manipulation at the hands of their parental figures.
Hunter got his puppet moment in TTT. Maybe Amity gets something similar in WAD. I know she's HAD her big important moment of establishing her autonomy in EE and then again in COTH. But maybe its one final nod to it. I also find it interesting that in spite of being puppetfied her hand is moving. Like to symbolise this defiance and stubbornness to comply with what Odalia has demanded of her ever since EE
- I've been mostly thinking about the potential scenario of Belos!Luz and GG!Hunter from Luz's POV. Cuz idek if we're getting the actual Hunter or a dream version of Hunter.
But like. It's FUCKED. Because Belos was Hunter's blood relation. He was his family. A terrible twisted version of a family but the only kind Hunter knew.
And then came Luz, who reinvented the meaning of family for him. She confided in him, she trusted him, she loved him. She made that boy her family because she adored him.
So THIS is deranged. Its warping the relationship they've built together into this depraved disturbing thing. The merger of these two family dynamics into one sickening thing. Like Luz was his shelter. But now she's become the exact thing he was running from.
Having Hunter look at her with blatant fear, shrinking himself so he stands beneath her, the horrible emotions that must make her feel. Oh I HATE THIS!!!
And even getting this miniscule comfort of Hunter ripped away from her. Like he was her PERSON. The only one who was aware of the horrible things she's done and she doesn't feel judged by, for several months. Like if all else failed, at least Hunter didn't hate her.
And now THIS scenario which is like "maybe....maybe he should be the one to hate you the most."
- Want a scene where Willow and Hunter gotta split up and there's some kind of antagonist pursuing them. They've only got a moment of peace before it reaches them. And Willow's like "You go ahead. I'll hold them off." (Like she did in LR) and Hunter doesn't want to leave her. But the circumstances are dire and he knows he has to and he KNOWS she'll keep herself alive. But he still worries. So they promise each other that they'll stay safe and Willow turns her back to him after that, preparing herself for a fight and expecting him to hurry off now. But he doesn't. He lingers there for an extra moment, wanting to tell her something but unable to put it into words. Then he zaps himself to her side, hastily smooches her cheek and zaps away before she can recover from her shock.
And then Willow is just. Left there. Stunned. Staring blankly at the space where he once was. And then a smile cracks her mouth wide open. Whatever she's fighting catches up to her and Willow can only cackle giddily, her engine all revved up, and she's all like LETS FUCKING GOOOOOO
Willow gets one teeny tiny little smooch by Hunter and it makes her go all "I AM POWERFUL AND I WILL NEVER DIE!!!!!!!"
- Actually overall I believe in a Willow and Hunter comic relief. I think Gus and Amity are both having special spotlight in this episode. And Luz will finally reunite with Eda and King. And idk WHERE the fuck Camila is (smooching puppet Darius or smth). But ya Willow and Hunter are gonn be so cringe.
- Evelyn Clawthorne voice reveal and Irish accent.
- Belos dies an excruciatingly painful death
- Hunter Noceda
- If there is not a big dramatic scene dedicated to Willow and Gus reuniting with their dads I am fucking killing somebody.

Stepping Stones: Chapter 13
Flapjack struggles in Hunter’s grip, looking at him with tortured eyes. Pleasure curls through him at the feeling of the palisman's desperate fluttering, and he squeezes tighter.
“That’s right, little palisman,” he says in a lilting voice, the echo of Belos just behind the words. “I don’t need you anymore.”
Flapjack can no longer struggle, Hunter’s grip is so tight. All he can do is watch.
“I’ve already forgotten you.”
A crack runs down his middle.
“And soon, everyone else will too.”
Flapjack crumbles into dust.
Cold horror rips through Hunter, the real Hunter. What did I just do, he thinks, and he strains against Belos’s control, pain blazing through his chest, tears pricking at his eyes. He screams, and the scene shatters, and then he’s no longer in the graveyard but in a sweat-soaked sleeping bag, sitting up, his throat raw.
“Hunter— Hunter! Hey, hey, hey.” Willow is at his side, her arms around him, and he sinks into them with a ragged breath.
“Sorry,” he gasps, “I’m sorry—“
A pillow hits his face, smacking away anything else was planning on saying. Sputtering indignantly, he looks up to find Amity standing over him with folded arms.
“Every unnecessary apology is another strike,” she tells him. He manages a shaky laugh.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Vee asks, leaning over the rail of the top bunk.
Haltingly, Hunter describes the dream. In the time it takes for him to get it all out, a gray light begins to edge around the curtains. Halloween is dawning.
“It makes sense,” Vee says when he finishes, “but it doesn’t make it any easier.” She clambers down from her bunk and sits on his other side, resting her head against his.
“But why were you so worried about forgetting him?” Gus asks. “Usually when you dream about that night, you hear what Belos actually said, right?”
Goodbye, Evelyn, he thinks, and shudders. “Yeah. But…” He looks around at his friends, all circled around him, the early morning light illuminating love and concern on their faces, and lets out a sigh. They’re going to find out eventually, and clearly keeping it in hasn’t been helping. “I’ve been thinking recently of making another palisman.”
He waits for their faces to shift, for accusation or disgust to seep through a careful veneer of concern— but all he gets are nods.
“That makes sense,” Amity offers.
“You don’t have to say that. It’s only been a year.”
“And? It’s not like there’s a timeline.”
“I know, I know, but this is too soon, isn’t it?”
“A palisman is a pretty essential part of life on the Isles,” Willow points out. “You use them to get around, most of the spells we’re learning at Hexside these days require them, and of course there’s flyer derby. It makes sense that you don’t want to rely on Stringbean for that.”
“I want to rely on Flap.”
“But he’s gone,” Vee says, her voice painfully gentle. “And that’s not your fault, or his. It’s just the way things are. You’re doing the best with what you’ve been given.”
There’s a long silence, and then Luz draws a breath. She speaks each word carefully enough that he knows she’s been thinking them over.
“After a few months of living on the Boiling Isles, I started thinking of Eda as a kind of mom. I loved her like one, and she cared for me like I was her kid. And that made me feel really guilty, because I had a mom back in the Human Realm, and I’d already hurt her by running away. When I started telling Mamá stories about Eda, I was kind of worried. I thought maybe she’d be jealous or something. But when I told her that, she said of course not. She said that she knew me caring about Eda didn’t mean I cared about her less, because that’s not how love works.”
Hunter lets out a breath. “And I know that. Or, I want to know that? I guess? Like, it’s not like I ever think Raine replaced Lightning with Fiddlesticks. But it still feels like I’m replacing Flap. Like I’m forgetting him. I don’t think I could have left the Emperor’s Coven without him. I don’t think I’d be anywhere near where I am now if he hadn’t found me. I don’t want to act like that didn’t matter.”
“Well, then,” Gus says, “it’s lucky we have the week off of school and all made plans to spend the day together. Let’s do something for Flapjack.”
“Like what?”
Luz takes a breath and leans forward, an old pain lurking behind her smile. “I have an idea.”
The grave is a team effort. Hunter picks its spot in the palistrom forest and helps Luz sketch out the design, Gus locates Matt and gets him to clear an hour to build it, and Willow and Amity surround it by flowers. By the evening, it’s a complete monument: a headstone wreathed in purple blooms, bearing the only words Hunter could imagine leaving as a legacy.
Thank you for finding me.
Camila brings them lunch, they sit in a circle and talk, telling stories about Flap and what they think he’d be up to in a world free of Belos’s control. It all sits heavy on Hunter’s chest, but the ache is easier, somehow, knowing that other people are feeling it too.
When the light in the clearing turns golden, casting all of their faces in shadow, Luz stands and offers a hand to pull Hunter to his feet. “So?” She asks. “Are you ready?”
Hunter lets out a long breath and looks back at the stone— a stone built to last, built so that anyone who walks through these woods will know what Flapjack did for him. “I think so.”
“All right.” Willow stands, too, and threads her fingers through his. “Let’s go find the right piece of wood.”
Hunter starts moving deeper into the forest, knowing the best wood is found in the older trees, but pauses at a tug in his chest. He turns back to the stone. Forces himself to look forwards again. Tries to move. Buries his face in his free hand.
“I’m sorry,” he rasps. “I’m just… I feel like I’m leaving him behind.”
A light hand rests on his back, and he turns to find Luz standing there, a darkness in her face he rarely sees. “You are,” she says simply. “That’s why it hurts so much. There isn’t anything that can fix that.”
“Is there anything that can help?” he asks desperately.
Luz shrugs, giving him a sad smile. “I’m still looking.”
“What about the tattoo?” Amity asks, coming to stand next to her.
Luz snaps her fingers. “Oh! Good thinking!”
“Tattoo?” Hunter asks.
“I got my mom’s permission to get one after I turned sixteen, but it’s taken me a while to settle on the right design.”
Luz takes out the sketchbook she used to draw out the image of Flapjack now etched into the grave. She flips through it until she reaches the page she wants, holding it out to him. A purple snake is sketched on it, with its head at the bottom of the paper and its tail reaching towards the top. Flowers bloom along its body, making it look like a sort of bouquet.
Willow gently runs her fingers along the body. “A snake for Stringbean?” she asks. Luz nods.
“And flowers for your dad,” Hunter says quietly.
He’s never really felt like he can compare losing Flapjack to Luz losing Manny— they feel, in his mind, like two entirely different kinds of loss. But as his mind goes over what Luz has been saying, he realizes she understands what he’s afraid of. He fears carving a new palisman and bonding with it, learning magic and playing flyer derby with it, because it means growing into a person who isn’t Flapjack’s witch. But Luz has been through that already; she’s not the girl with the flowers in her father’s memory. She has left him behind. She’s grown up into someone he doesn’t know anymore.
Hunter can see in Luz’s face that she recognizes him realizing this, and she gives him another little smile.
“I’m not the person he knew,” she says. “But that person is still part of me. This way, I can always remember that. He’ll never understand the snake, never know who Stringbean is or what she means to me. But I’ll always have the flowers he gave me, and I’ll always remember the person he gave them to. Always remember him.”
Tears fill Hunter’s eyes and he nods. “I think I understand.”
He looks back at the grave once more, and Luz takes his hand.
“Let it hurt,” she says. “But keep moving anyway.”
Hunter takes a deep breath and feels Willow squeeze his other hand, sees Gus wrap one arm around her and one arm around Vee, feels Amity come to stand on Luz’s other side. They walk away together, and it tears at his chest, but he puts one foot in front of the other until Flapjack is out of sight.
He finds the perfect piece of wood to take about ten minutes later, and they make their way to palisman carving grove. The first notch is made with trembling hands, but Hunter has learned not to mind the idea of imperfections. He keeps going, one shaky cut at a time, until his hands find their rhythm again.
Word of what he’s doing gets around, and as the evening wears on, he finds Camila on one side of him and Darius on the other. Raine plays low, soothing songs and Eda hums along. Whenever Hunter looks up, he can see Dell, Gwen, and Eber sitting together, all giving him smiles of approval.
The sky is totally dark by the time he finishes, a plump blue bird perched on his fingers. A cold nausea fills Hunter as he looks at their still form in the shadows, his nightmare layering overtop of the reality, the weight of Flapjack’s broken form heavy in his unresponsive palms. Someone nudges his leg, and he looks down to see Gus counting one, two, three, four with his fingers and inhaling slowly in time. Hunter exhales along with him, and they breathe like that until he feels his mind settle back in the present.
“Very good, Hunter,” Dell says. “Now all you need to do is express your wish.”
Hunter looks down at the palisman again, mulling it over. He can hear his voice from a year ago floating through his head, desperate and angry.
I'd like to leave the Emperor’s Coven, and never set foot in the throne room again. I'd like to study wild magic, and learn how to carve palismen. I’d like to attend Hexside as a regular student, and play flyer derby with my friends. But most of all, I’d like to make sure you never hurt anyone again.
And he’s done it. Everything he wanted, he got. A sense of pride, warm and soothing, seeps through him at the knowledge— but even so, something doesn’t feel quite right. Getting the future you wanted, he realizes, doesn’t mean getting over the past you lost.
“I want to heal,” he says, so quietly he almost can’t hear himself.
He clears his throat. Stares at his hands until they swim before him. His hands, that destroyed Flapjack. That have created countless palismen since, including the one who sits in those hands now, waiting to come to life.
“I want to heal,” Hunter says, and this time his voice doesn’t waver. “I want to help heal the palistrom forests, and bring palismen to life. I want to be there for my friends, and help them heal from what they’ve endured. And I want to find as much healing as I can for me. I want to be able to feel my pain without being afraid of it. Without being afraid of myself.”
There’s a fluttering in his fingers, a pulse of life. And the palisman— his palisman— opens his eyes.

Something about Luz reflection in the portal, but at the same time glimpsing the grave on the other side… I feel like there’s some meaning I should be able to derive from that. Um… I dunno, something about a dream dying? As in, Luz’ dream of a happy life in the Demon Realm dies here in the Human Realm or something.
Death as in permanence, as in Luz deciding to stay in the Human Realm permanently.
Luz feels dead inside.
(this is the kind of quality analysis you can only get here, at Lampman Liveblogs)
Tumblr media
”I was scared… I thought you’d all hate me for it. Which is why I’ve made a decision. I think… that it’d be in everyone’s best interest if I-”
”Took your mama to the Demon Realm!”
Heck. Yes.
I think we’ve already established I’m all for that. Now Camila will finally get to meet Luz’ mentor and bonus mom Eda, her lil bro King, Hooty, cool aunt Lilith… oh, and The Collector! If anyone can tame a childish god, it’d be the woman who raised Luz.
I also appreciate that while Camila herself is not immune to making bad decisions, she will also keep her daughter from making bad decisions… granted, this is more like postponing the issues rather than actually solving them, but we’ll get there eventually, I’m sure.
Tumblr media
HOL UP, wiat a mintue-
When did Hunter’s eyes change color!??!???? ANd how did I miss it?????
I rewound a bit, and it’s right there, when he wakes up and I just. Missed it. I can’t believe this. I’m an utter failure as a liveblogger and a person. As punishment, I will go on another four month hiatus which is only occasionally broken by posting a few low-quality memes and fanfics that no one will read.
(hey, Luz and Hunter ((and Camila)) have the same eye color now, that’s neat)
Tumblr media
Pictured: Amity being the MOST awesome girlfriend that ever was an awesome girlfriend.
I mean, echoing Luz’ own words from when she asked Amity out is just next-level. so Hang on Sloopy, and let’s go get that bastard Belos.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Me, ruffling my snake daughter’s pycnofibers.
Vee’s staying behind in the Human Realm, which… yeah, that makes sense. All her life spent in the Demon Realm was a nightmare. Things only started getting better for her when she came to the Human Realm. Hunter too had a hard upbringing (maybe putting it a bit lightly there), but he at least have some things there to fight for.
Oh, and minor detail, but confirmation that Camila does have living relatives back in the homeland.
Tumblr media
And then they hit me with this rendition of the closing theme… it’s too beautiful
Tumblr media
As the portal closes and Vee walks of smiling, sure that her family can handle this, we pan up to the beautiful night sky an-
”Shoot, Camila still has the car keys.”
…Vee gives the funniest line of the episode. I love the implication that if she just had the keys, Vee could totally drive the car back home. She is a basilisk/snake/legless lizard/naga of many talents.

Admittedly, this is definitely more of Disney's fault for shortening the series and this post is more of "what could have been" speculation than genuine critique, but i feel like if the crew had six 22 min episodes instead of three 44 min ones (same overall runtime!) the issues with the pacing could have been largely fixed.
They overall seem to work well with 22 min stories, as they had a lot of practice with first two seasons and this is overall more of an animation standard. With season 3 i think they were struggling to fit everything in one episode and then struggling to fill the next.
So! Just imagine (mixed with personal rewrite things bc im a salty bitch):
For the Future could be easily condensed into one episode. Boscha's and Kikimora's deal may be nice fanservice, but it's not of first importance. So the story can be cut and fiddled with to focus on just Luz and Willow with Belos doing his thing in the C plot.
The other 22 min could go either into the Thanks to Them part of the season or Watching and Dreaming part, but personally i would use it to focus on Hunter's possession.
If they want the possession thing to be a genuine point in Hunter's arc, it definitely needs more time. Show us Hunter in his mindscape struggling for control with Belos, connect it more clearly to Hunter's "i don't want to be like Belos" and "i want to be my own person not a tool" fears, show us all the classic drama of "character is forced to fight their loved one(s) but doesn't want to hurt them", give just a bit more focus to other characters reactions to the situation and give more runtime to the depressing aftermath, etc.
There still won't be enough time to show Hunter grieving, so feel like Flapjack's death still should be cut, but if not, then at least the possession thing has more narrative purpose.
The other two Thanks to Them episodes, could still focus on Luz and Camila and Luz and Hunter, maybe give them a bit more time. But i also think the additional time could be used to for Willow (actual hints and foreshadowing to her bottling up problem), Gus (he barely got anything!), Huntlow (i feel like Thanks to Them lacked a major Huntlow moment for the build up to feel more organic) and Wittebane lore.
The Wittebane lore could be also easily connected with Gus since he literally saw all of Belos' memories oh my god--
Also, more of a personal gripe maybe, but the Grimwalker reveal should have happened in Thanks to Them with Willow and Gus. The way it actually happened was just so.. anticlimactic. We could have had a moment of character development with Hunter revealing this by his own volition and that major Huntlow moment i was talking about. It also could connect to Gus&Wittebane plot!
With Watching and Dreaming i have less notes, but they definitely could have paced out Collector's arc better
And also just imagine the devastating cliffhanger Luz's death could have been.
This wouldn't have fixed everything of course, but i think the crew would have had more chance to make it work.

So uhhh change of Forgotten Star AU plot a bit?xD
Collector is no longer hidden, but forbidden to leave the castle. Belos doesn’t know what this new situation means and can’t risk killing them or breaking the tablet. The fact that they don’t have all(or most) their magic and no memories except for vague feelings is actually convenient. He can keep them on a leash until he is finished and leaves the realm.
Also Belos lies about the nature of their relationships and how Collector was basically ‘cursed’ or ill and Belos was trying to help them and nurture to health and just now they were able to wake up properly and the amnesia is a an unfortunate consequence. He also takes the tablet away, argumenting that this thing hurt them. And Collector more or less believes him, feeling vaguely unsettling around it. He still feels like he needs it, but not as strongly, and easily trusts Belos on this one.
Belos claims him to be some distant relative and that wild magic did this horrible thing to them. And he tells Hunter(and everyone) that he didn’t say anything because there were high risks he wouldn’t make it, so he didn’t want to give false hope.
Collector can still have his separate room and be restricted in his movement. And Belos doesn’t want them talking with Hunter and forbids him approaching them, cause they are still weak from their illness and need rest.
Collector doesn’t agree xD Something about Hunter draws them in, as if they always wanted to play with him. He figures it was from the possible stories from Belos when he was ill. So they talk anyway xD
Aaalso Collector sneaks out cause they are so curious, they feel suffocated and need to get out! There they meet Luz and King! Collector doesn’t know what they are, Belos had forbidden them to reveal their ears but they know they can’t be a demon or witch. And they see Luz having round ears, so maybe he is a human?? He is not, but Luz is concerned about this kid hiding from Emperor Scouts, having round ears like her and no memories.
And then Collector sees King and they immediately cling to him and also feel like they’ve heard him somewhere. He is confused when that could have happened. King recognizes the voice too. Somewhat. He is not sure if what he saw in his dream was real and that sphere he touched was real. Now he doesn’t know what to think! But he can relate to their struggle to find out/remember who they are!
Also Belos says his name is Thomas and Collector(with Luz and King’s efforts) picks Star.(cause I am original and they have star freckles dkjsh xD)

We got ANOTHER promo y’all!!! It’s technically a trailer but it’s thankfully very brief, given the runtime it’s hyping up is only two episodes, compared to usual TOH trailers that are advertising at least nine episodes! This is an official release and NOT a leak!
Tumblr media
First off, Luz’s laptop!!! She’s doing this 11:09 pm at just 20%, she’s got references to Stardew Valley and Hollow Knight on her desktop, and I think that one Hades game? The one with Zagreus? Anyhow the Hollow Knight references are REAL, coupled with the S1 intro, makes you wonder if it influenced stuff like Hollow Mind…!
Luz also has a Good Witch Azura fanfic file! And she’s recently made art since her return to the human world; You can’t see all of it, but it appears to the Owl House’s roof, in a parallel to how the intro usually ends with Luz, Eda, and King on the roof when she ignites a light spell and pushes it into the sky! Augghhhh she’s coping…! And her username is @FriendofOwlsandTitans… Oh my GAWD! She accepts King as a TITAN she’s a friend to TITANS!!! Original art do not steal, just like her GF!
“All I ever wanted was to be good at something”… Good lord, if that doesn’t summize SO much about Luz. Her feelings of inadequacy. Her initial dreams of being a chosen one. Her desire to help others and be of service to them. Her need to JUSTIFY her own existence, to quote her girlfriend… That hit hard. Like I know but OW.
She’s making video diaries again as we guessed, but this time to HERSELF; Girl needs a place to vent, good for her! She probably stayed up and snuck to the kitchen to let herself indulge in her dark feelings and thoughts alone. Did Luz make a video for Eda and King and eventually give up, being forced to confront herself inward without any distractions? She says she knows what she has to do now, is… Is Luz about to do something rash? Something involving Belos? Babey don’t hurt yourself, or maybe she just means the general principle of making thing right!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then skipping past stuff we DO know, we see Luz and Hunter dressed up for Halloween! Hunter has a HOOTY mask, likely meant to invoke his Golden Guard persona, and Luz is honoring King OH MY GAWD WAAAIIIIII!!!!! She’s MOURNING her Titan brother, just like she mourned Eda! They’re in a dilapidated house, the shack where the Portal opens? They’re armed… Probably investigating paranormal activity, AKA Belos. This fits with another shot of them entering a basement with the same coloring as the house, atop the stairs!
Tumblr media
We get a proper look at Amity and Gus’ new designs in the show’s own art style! They look AMAZING… They painted Hooty’s face on the door, pffft, but also ouch. The longing. Treating this place as an earthly version of the Owl House because it kind of is with its role and even coloration! If they miss Hooty you KNOW it’s been a while. Willow must’ve grown flowery vines outside to spruce up the place, it seems to have been converted into a fulltime hideout! If this was the old Wittebane home, I’m sure Caleb would appreciate it… Philip on the other hand.
The door seems to have just… Opened on its own as Amity looks back. Or did somebody, probably Luz and/or Hunter (seeing a glimpse of Gooplos?) quietly leave, and Amity only notices when she hears the door swinging behind them?
Tumblr media
We have a hand, either Amity, Willow, or Hunter’s, reaching out to some glow-in-the-dark night decorations; Including a symbol of the moon and sun. This is likely one of the characters mourning and being reminded of the Collector, rather than in-universe connection.
Tumblr media
We see our cast, sans Luz, looking at some sort of box with styling reminiscent of the Portal! Not only does it suggest it was actually Caleb and his wife who made it (and Philip plagiarized), but also! Caleb must’ve left it behind in the human world. When Flapjack was pecking at the floorboards, was it to find this? It must be a clue, perhaps on how to make a portal, a Titan’s blood rift, etc.! Is this distraction what got Luz to sneak out earlier?
Tumblr media
There’s some sort of book page we see next, presumably the contents of the box the kids found given their hands! I’m not sure the significance of the symbols, but the bottom one reminds me of the curse… Or is it just a reference to Clawthornes loving birds, AKA his wife? Is that some sort of teardrop? Maybe it’s Titan’s Blood and that’s meant to be a FURRY arm of a Titan! And what even IS that thing to the right?!
Hunter says “Did you know that HE was here?!” In a distressed voice. Is this him potentially confronting one of our protagonists for keeping information about Gooplos’ potential survival, regardless if they actually knew and were hiding? Or him talking about Philip and Caleb to perhaps Luz, with the realization that either was a town founder, and inquring as to how Luz didn’t notice!
Then we get Gus and Hunter THE BROS dressed up for Halloween, Hunter doesn’t want to hear spoilers because Gus is likely talking about a recent human hyperfixation of theirs! Brothers.
And then, finally… Luz and Hunter aren’t here, it’s just the other kids, maybe those two are at some other part of the zoo more personal like the aviary…
Tumblr media
WE GET THE LONG-AWAITED ANSWER TO THE GIRAFFES!!! AFTER TWO YEARS, ARGUABLY THREE IF YOU CONSIDER WHEN THE FIRST TEASER THAT MENTIONED GIRAFFES WAS RELEASED!!! Since the very beginning, we have been haunted by this question and whether they’d answer it, but now… NOW…! It all comes to light.
The kids are obviously scared and locking arms in preparation, that’s so cute, venturing into ancient territory that hasn’t been traversed for generations. WILLOW HAS HER HAIRCLIP FROM WING IT LIKE WITCHES!!! Was it a gift from Amity, I MISSED IT SO MUCH! She takes a picture and a Giraffe, recognizing natives from its home realm, FREAKS…
Tumblr media
We get one idea of why Giraffes were banned and it makes sense. God the kids’ reactions are so funny. Of course Willow the Bravest is bold enough to step ahead and take pictures for the rest! This is such adorable levity and I appreciate the closure, this is their one chance so of course they’d take it after two months of debating if they should risk it! Mayhaps they regret that risk now.

TOH S3 EP3 REACTION, AKA, THE SERIES FINALE PEOPLE!!!!!!!
I have no idea how long this will take me, just as a warning idk how long it will take me to watch and write all this, its about an hour long episode so
LETS GO!
Woah, instantly, King's dad maybe?? Or just some other titan guy is telling Luz to wake up from maybe the mirror realm thing established? Cool!
Now Luz, how the hell did you get there? "How did I get here?" LUZ DON'T STEAL MY QUESTION
Oh fuck she is in the emporer's.. temple? Already forgot the name, but i assume its some sort of dream as, this was destroyed? By the collector? Who knows really
WOAH guys, Bump as stone ain't funky, i actually came around to liking that guy, they were dolls last time we saw them!!!! Definitely some form of dream
"Don't you remember?" From Amity CONFIRMED to me that its a dream, there is 0 way we are gonna witness a breakup this episode, I refuse
Amity looks so good with this hair I can't lie, idk if I have commented on this before, but if so, I will say it again, she rocks it! And I want her moon necklace and shoes, that's a given
"This isn't a dream, it is a nightmare!" Love that it took until her girlfriend was trying to kill her for her to realise, fucking love Luz man
EDA!!! LOVELY TO SEE YOU, as always. HARPY EDA`1 ...In prison. Well, it is a lovely call back to season 1 episode 1 so I will accept it!
AAHHHH Her first thought after seeing her mum and sister is "THANK GOD, now lets go find king" I LOVE TOH FAMILY
"Dangerous beasts need to be kept in cages" I know this is a dream, but Lilith queen, you ARE a DANGEROUS BEAST TOO, Eda come on, don't fall for this, have a lightbulb moment like Luz
WOAH DON'T BRING HER DAD INTO IT! DON'T DO THAT TO MY GIRL,, she will cry! Collector (I assume its you) THIS ISN'T VERY NICE
King: *gets jump scared by the guy who is trying to kill him and his species and who wear's his family's skulls"
Also King: "Bill! You crazy jerk! How did I get here?" THAT IS AN UNDERREACTION KING....... See, I TOLD YOU it was an underreaction! He is now trying to decapitate you!
WILLOW! Well. What else did you expect from a nightmare Luz?
GUS! GOD I love Gus, even mean dream Gus is iconic, what a performer
HUNTER! "He was more than a paslisman, he was my best friend." ....guys I won't lie, its a bit difficult to still be in denial about Flapjack, ngl.
.....The challenging to a witch's battle thing made the really intense moment, really not tense anymore because it feels like something out of like harry potter or something
"bip. boop." .....Luz, bestie, what are you doing, because whatever it is, its hilarious. "But you aren't amity!" WE ESTABLISHED THIS BRO, whether its a dream/nightmare or some illusion, IT DOESN'T MATTER, it still isn't real.... maybe she was making a joke when she said nightmare.
OOO PUPPET STRINGS! Cute.
Woahhh rubix cubes exist here?! KING EDA AND LUZ REUNITED, "Are you both really here?" AHSUHDKLDF fuck I will cry
"Ray-Ray" I HOPE WE ALL STEAL THIS NICKNAME FOR RAINE
"King is going to hate me for this" AWWWWW, I mean. Totally not aww, the collector is doing evil things. "My powers don't work on king." "The dog?" "Yeah, cause he is a titan" the Collector just told Belos the biggest fucking news, but also Belos calling King the dog just makes me think that King is like scooby doo or somethin
HEY DON'T HIT FRANCOIS, fucking bully you are Belos, that was not cool!
ABSJHNFEOFN OWLBERT AND STRINGBEAN FRIENDS, AND EDA BEING EXCITED ABOUT LUZ'S PALISMAN!
"....Do you not understand what death means to mortals?" Well. As an immortal, probably not, but as a KIDDO, definitely not, again, feel bad for the Collector, if only we get just stick our heads back on after we chop them off (Eda can legit do that tho wait-)
RAINE you are back! Oh well, you were. "Annoying powerful" just say you are jealous broski, Raine IS great, love them
OOOO Amity is moving, slowly. Huh.
ARE THEY PLAYING PACMAN?! AND NOW MARBLES!? Awww, see, they are just a kiddo!
JENGA! Iconic group of games. Poor Collector just wants toys and friends bless them
"The archivists, my siblings" Man, TMA fan in me was like "JON IS YOUR SIBLING?! Makes sense."
......AWWW. WAIT WHAT NO. Okay. so BASICALLY, the Collector's siblings went "go play with the titans, we don't like you" blah blah, and THEN when the collector goes and plays with the titans (especially the little guys, like King) THE SIBLINGS GOT UPSET SO KILLED OFF EVERY TITAN?! But King's dad went to the Collector "YOU are the bad guy, I am hiding king from you and trapping you" DAMN IT
"I know its just pretend, but I don't care, i will pretend for as long as I want"...... Okay well again, THERE IS NO NEED FOR THE HARD HITTING LINES BRO
RAINE ARE YOU BACK?! Hell yeah, bard magic is sick, HELL YEAH, Raine pal don't injure yourself BUT GO SAVE EDA i think Belos means Eda anyway
...this isn't King's heart is it? Like, how would that work? Maybe its King's dad's heart? Idk
NOOO THE GOO GOT ONTO THE HEART, Belos that was mean, BUT RAINE YOU DID SO WELL, IGNORE BELOS YOU DID AMAZINGLY
OKAY so it isn't King's heart, that's good, i was confused
NOOOOOOo STEVE IS A PUPPET, well the whole island is, but still, STEVE I MISS YOU
"None of us felt like we fit in. So we decided to not fit in together" GOD YOU ARE HURTING MY FOUND FAMILY HEART IN THE BEST WAY
TITAN MAGIC!!?? King bestie YOU CAN DO IT
Belos I am being deadly serious what is your plan, I don't get it, you wanna kill all witches and demons, sure, but this is just making the area ugly, turning it into the dead coral reef ain't going to help
...................Okay Belos you are just ugly now. How do you keep getting uglier, its shocking
....................."You just need kindness and forgiveness huh" COLLECTOR BESTIE, OUT OF ALL THE PEOPLE WHO THAT WOULD WORK ON, BELOS IS THE ONLY ONE WHO DOESN'T
"But i thought I was doing the right thing" OH MY DARLING COLLECTOR, MY KIDDO, how do you explain this to him, why is THIS the closest i have got to tears
LUZ BESTIE. If I had a nickel everytime Luz got almost turned to some form of stone in a season finale by Belos, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot, but its weird that it happened twice, right?
.......Alright so why is this not solving itself, am I going to have to wait until the finale minutes to see how Luz gets un-coral-ified?!
WHERE DID SHE GO, okay well now the Collector has a tiny sparkley thing of Luz she will survive, no idea how but still
DOES EVERYONE KNOW THIS IS LUZ, I would be mad as fuck if my ashes were being floated across the city, like, damn, do I not get privacy in death?!
EDA AND KING GOING FERAL BECAUSE OF LUZ'S TEMPORARY DEATH IS ALL I NEED AIUSDAOWDEJWAOR
Poor collector, he is just a kiddo, he doesn't understand, bless him
waIT NO DON'T LET GO OF LUZ, SHE IS NOT REALLY GONE DUMBASS
SEE! The little sparkley thing is vibing, in the mirror, realm bit
OH ARE WE AT THE BEGINNING AGAIN! WOO........ Okay why does King's dad have a mini Hooty in his eye and have a "Bad girl coven" t-shirt?! I LOVE HIM, but why is he so short? Is it because they aren't in normal realm so size is weird?
"I am both King and Queen, best of both things" IS THAT A HANNA MONTANNA REFERENCE?!?! IS KING'S DAD A HANNA MONTANNA FAN!? also does that mean gender is just, none existant here? SLAYY
"What? Have you been drinking Eda's homemade apple blood?" BEST RESPONCE TO THAT QUESTION
WAIT DON'T DIE KING'S DAD, NOOOOOOOOOO
.....Does this make Luz a titan? Temporarily one. "Eda the owl lady? Send her my regards. Big fan" AKJFSNFJ:EDOFL
Okay so yeah, he is huge, did think so.
RIP KING'S DAD, I WILL MISS YOU AHHHHHHHH
I will end it here for part one, its now been an hour and a half since I first started the episode and I am half way through so!

Going back through TOH's episodes, it strikes me how boring they are. Part of the problem seems to be how criminally unfunny the show is, generally speaking. I can count how many times I've laughed on one hand. In fact I can list them:
There was the "It's been my dream since I was a boy" guy pushing kids off cliffs (Moving Hassle), Luz's "He'll be fine" after throwing Hunter overboard - and then his subsequent re-entry (Hunting Palismen) - and lastly Luz tumbling offscreen in front of Amity after a spider crawls on her face (Grom). That's 3 scenes, 4 jokes if we're being charitable. And sure, maybe my sense of humour is just incompatible with TOH's and I'm being harsh.
But I can't deny that I just feel like there's no rewatch value in TOH? Like it's just... the jokes are so bad to the point it's not fun, it's not entertaining, it's a slog, I see no value in retreading the same ground. And I am a SERIAL rewatcher! This is coming from someone who spends maybe 85% of their time experiencing the same stories! I love seeing well-done media all over again, because even if I know what's going to happen or what they will say, a well-structured joke or a skillfully delivered line is still gonna engage me.
I can't even recommend the show to anyone because I HAVE in the past... and what ends up happening is they watch the first couple episodes, get bored, go "I recognize that you like this, but it's not my thing" and drop it. And I CAN'T BLAME THAT! Because that's how I reacted too when I got into the show! I only stuck with it because it seemed like it was going really interesting places. And it tried to, I think, and failed.
I'm also a very fandom-heavy person so TOH's boring episodes have made it increasingly harder for me to stay within it. Because I'm not rewatching anything, I can see myself in real time as I forget more and more of the plotlines, and even a lot of the characters. It's just... kind of disappointing. It's like I just had a gradual fizzling out of interest. I don't even hate the show, which might be better in some ways - instead I just can't muster enough shits to feel any type of way towards it.
I rambled a bit but I guess my ultimate ask here was: what are your thoughts on whether or not TOH manages to entertain new/old viewers?
So I like S1. I think the characters are what carry it and that they are at their most interesting, EASILY, in S1.
The vast majority of S1, in terms of concepts and executions for plots, is OKAY AT BEST.
This actually just comes down to a simple tonal decision of TOH and also just the fact that a boring world with boring magic creates little to do with bog standard plots and TOH actually has a LOT of bog standard plotting. It is a pretty classic story structurally and takes genuinely very few risks in the structure... Which is okay in theory.
There is nothing wrong with not reinventing the wheel and TOH talks a big game about subverting tropes but no. As a fantasy fan, I can tell you this is EXCEPTIONALLY normal. Like... Insultingly from how much it talks a big game. Especially because if you're going to do classic, you have three options: Shoot the moon, lean into the unique elements of your concept or do it VERY. VERY. WELL.
And remember: They did a body swap episode and it is one of the most hated episodes of the entire show. That's not a good sign.
But this touches on the second problem I brought up: This is a boring world with boring magic. Because TOH's fantasy world is so basic, has little magic and little flair with its magic, it inherently limits what it can do. Now, it doesn't have to be this way but the show made it this way with how little we see of it, how limited it is (like how plant magic is 99% vines), and how often it just blatantly makes one to one comparisons between it and our world with effectively NOTHING altered like how the covens are just jobs, right down to them being introduced through a job fair and a boring one at that.
So when we look at a classic episode concept like the body swap episode, the three plots are... Easily replicated elsewhere. One person gets in trouble in the swap's job because they don't know what they're doing (with the most unique twist of this actually landing them in prison), a classic animal plot where they're taken in by a place that seems cozy and then isn't with literally no changes, and finally... Teenager pisses off bullies and agrees to jump DEAD MAN'S GORGE! But instead of skateboards and people really building it up, its rat beasts.
None of these plots are actually bad, they're go tos for a reason, but... No one is bringing anything special to this. Luz is entirely ignored so her character may as well not matter, Eda is doing NOTHING to add to her plot and King... King is fun for about two minutes leading the bullies and otherwise is just any other character in this situation. It's not bad, I personally enjoy parts of the episode... But it's nothing special. From the second the thing that X character is going to do is revealed, you can guess every step of the plot and they don't even really throw in good jokes in the process. A couple jokes but nothing memorable because everything is weirdly subdued compared to how other shows would be, even in an episode that is definitely trying to be more over the top.
And this runs into the inherent tonal issue of TOH: It doesn't want to be an adventure comedy. Those are genres that are commonly really over the top. They hear jump the shark and go "How about a shark jumping ten other sharks in order to finish making a can of tuna for their fire giant overlord?" And the face of this fact, in that the genres it pitches itself as for the first two episodes!
TOH flatly refuses to be silly and over the top. It's characters are very... 'realistic'. I don't mean real, just that they're meant to feel more mature by being more in control. They don't let them interrupt each other for a joke, they don't let a character be potentially OOC for a one off gag like Hop Pop screaming "EAT THE RICH!" or Sprig asking "Have you ever killed a a man, Hop Pop," and I can only think of one time Luz got mad for the sake of a joke and honestly, yelling about the Rusty Smidge barely comes across as a joke because of how genuine the anger feels after a point. Otherwise, stuff that would normally get exaggerated frustration or the like to at least let you laugh at the reaction just... doesn't get one, like how Luz yells about Luzura being killed off but then... Just walks off and is passive aggressive mostly instead of even exasperated. For a drama or romance, this is not a bad approach but for even just an adventure kid's show... It's not great to put it mildly because people meet odd situations with weird levels of nonchalance. Not quite irony poisoned levels but getting there.
It's why TOH is mostly remembered for the romance and drama episodes. Not only do they allow some of the romance scenes to actually include melodrama, they also just fit how the characters act better. It's why Amity has some of the biggest emotions of the series and why Lumity have such great lines between each other because they're actually willing to lean into the sort of genre fiction that they're doing. This is also why S2 works better than S1 because a lot of the pretense of being a comedy adventure gets dropped but like... There's still plenty of boring in S2 with stuff like how Elsewhere Elsewhen takes time travel and includes a couple jokes at the beginning and then is just... horribly bland and barely qualifies as an adventure.
This lack of allowing people to be emotional and jokey also leads to the reliance on comic relief characters. People like Gus, King or Hooty, or S2 Lilith, who the characters can mock in someway, including the writers. Characters who can be the punchline even if it means a lot of people come off a lot meaner than they should, i.e. Luz absolutely rejecting Hooty for the vast majority of the series despite supposedly liking the weird and rejected. That also means that most of the time they're not on screen, either the scene starts getting pretty dry or you have a character suddenly warp to be comic relief, like how Eda gets in some S2 episodes like Elsewhere Elsewhen or Eclipse Lake where suddenly she's MUCH more of a joke than she normally is and also REALLY bad at it too and seeming potentially brain dead for it. Thanks to Them even does this to Amity even though she is probably the last person in the cast to make sense as a sudden clutz.
All of this stuff makes it so that if you go in wanting a kid's show, a fantasy show, ANYTHING that is pitched in the first episode... S1 is going to be just okay to you. I enjoyed it... But I also fell off when I first watched it. I thought the characters were good but none of it stuck with me as actually memorable and I watched until I think Adventure in the Elements. I never was never compelled to come back until Lumity animations (literally THE Little Miss Perfect animatic that is nowadays probably hard to find actually) made me go "I remember this show being neat." And Lumity was what kept me, not because I was generally laughing or calling these episodes something special. In fact, that sense of unsatisfaction is probably why I watched through it faster than Amphibia. No one episode of TOH is really great to watch on its own because... It's just kind of boring, or like half of it is boring because the B plots across the board are SO BLAND. S1 or 2 for that matter since Lumity starts getting boring B plots like with the archives or finding out the author of Azura. Both concepts btw that could have been really interesting setups and instead... If you're not into blushing Amity, get FUUUUUCKED.
That's without getting into REPETITION. Repetition kills comedy so King having one joke for S1 and also taking up like half of the B plots for the first ten episodes means you are going to be in agony eventually anytime someone talks to him because you know where it's going and you have DEFINITELY heard this joke before. And you know, he also gets three repetitive B plots which just hurts the joke even more, even as they try to make twists on it, and hurts the feeling that the show is doing... Anything..
It's just not good. Which is probably why once the characters and the 'subversive/unique' elements of the show both weakened, more and more people left because... Why would you keep watching this then? Those elements are what made up for boring plots with boring execution in a world that didn't allow for more interesting storytelling because it had few ideas and expanded on NONE OF THEM. So of course people pitch it using the elements that say "this isn't like other kids shows/fantasy shows" because if you pitch it to people who like those... They'll just be disappointed eventually and bored quickly. Like i think a lot of people did to be quite honest.
And a lack of creativity, and a lack of genre understanding, isn't something time could have ever fixed.
======+++++======
The short version of proving this point btw is going "Compare Bumi's introductory episode, which is a character giving three trials to prove another's worth, versus when the Bat Queen challenges Luz. One is exceptionally funny, interesting and has genuinely interesting twists while the other is... There. So very there. Painfully just... there. Not even bad, just... There.
Also, yes, comedy is extremely subjective which is why I tried to talk more about how a lot of these premises are boring because that can be a bit more objective.

Predictions, Hopes, and Headcannons for Watching and Dreaming
Flashbacks!!!
Orgins of both The Collector and the Titans. I would love to know more about both of their species and about King's father
Caleb Wittebane AND Evelyn Clawthorne. I need to know what these two sound like. Even if its just for a second. Give me more reasons to feel sad that Caleb is gone, leaving Evelyn a widow and single parent.
Manny Noceda. Not sure how that would be integrated into the narrative. Maybe and unconcious Luz getting advice/motivation from her Papi?
Belos. Im a lover of angst, so I would love to see the entire process of him deciding he needed to kill Caleb.
Callback(s) to A Lying Witch and a Warden
"Do not underestimate me ______. For I am Luz Noceda, _______ ...Now eat this sucka!" Luz delivering the final blow.
Tumblr media
"And that's the end!" I could totally see the series ending with Luz retelling this entire story to her children. To witchlings, human children, etc. I think it would be cute!
Awesome animation!!
There are only two things I can think of that would get the majority of the animation budget.
A fight scene.
Luz reuniting with King and Eda. I will cry many, many tears.
Or...we get both 🤷🏻👀
Raine's possession
As I stated in a previous post, Eda is now the spitting image of Evelyn. I wouldn't be surprised is Belos tries to hurt her. I would like to think they would stop him before he is able to but idk...
I also like to think they'll prevent Belos from actually harming Eda, the kids, etc.
They'll be 'unpossessed' with the help of the Collector
However, I think the main people Belos will be aiming to hurt would be Luz, Eda, or Hunter. Yet, he might also hurt King, Willow, Amity, Gus, and/or Camila to hurt them.
I don't think Raine will walk out of this without a few scars. Specifically on their ear and cheek
Tumblr media
Lumity
I NEED an "I love you." from Luz. Amity has been the one to initiate everything in their relationship. She asked Luz out, she always gives initiates physical affection, etc. I would love for Luz to initiate this one.
A call back to Good Witch Azura 2.
Tumblr media
Im sure there will be parallels of this entire scene alone, but I'll be awaiting the angst that is to come.
Future Lumity! I need to see these two older. Even as adults maybe. I live for this relationship due to it being such a revolutionary thing. A healthy, happy sapphic couple. Maybe they both subtlely got rings on their finger 👀
Huntlow
I dont think the plotline of Hunter being a grimwalker was resolved. I think Willow will pull him aside and talk to him about it. Saying what he is changes nothing about how she feels about him.
And then he'll say something about loving the person she is. How grateful he is for her, etc.
Reunions!
Luz, King, and Eda. I'll cry. Especially if it's something like this:
Tumblr media
Amity and Alador; Willow and Gilbert and Harvey; Gus and Perry; Lilith and Hooty; Clawthorne family reunion
All the Hexside kids with their parents
King and The Collector
I really feel like there will be a confrontation later that will go along the lines of:
The Collector: You betrayed me! If you don't ____, I'll-
King: Or you'll what? Kill me? Just like your people did to my dad? My entire species??
I think it would be cute if the Collector was integrated into the relationship King has with Luz. Unique sibling trio for the win!
King letting The Collector hold François
Epilogue
Luz having her quinceñera. All her friends and family are there. Eda, Camila, and Amity dance with her.
Or if they do flash-foward: Everyone just living their lives.
Hunter carving palismen and living his best life. Helping young witches carve their own. Maybe he'll even carve his own palisman when he's ready. I am certain it will be a bird.
Gus being an ambassador* of the human realm. *: wreaking havoc. Occasionally accompanied by Luz, Willow, and/or Hunter. I could also see him as an Illusionist instructor.
Willow being a coach for grugby at Hexside. Helping to lift up young witches confidence and self-esteem.
Amity not working for the family business at all. Maybe a teacher or as a librarian.
Maybe all of them just work at Hexside lol
Raeda being old gays. I will simply NOT accept either of them dying. That's a hate crime.
Lumity and Huntlow adults
An actual scene of people going to therapy. Maybe someone leaves and tags the next person in lol
A parallel to this scene:
Tumblr media
Luz has gone through a lot. But she made it through a better and wiser person witch. She can just be embracing what her life is now in TBI before flying back home to Amity and/or Eda and King.
.
.
.
Will likely add more later lol
Feel free to do it too!

Just finished "Watching and Dreaming". Phenomenal series finale, I adored Luz meeting the Titan - and that he was wearing a "Bad Girl Coven" T-shirt, he really was Eda's biggest fan! Titan Witch Luz was EPIC, and the epilogue was one of the best I've seen in anything, they addressed so much in that ending montage it was incredible! Wild school of magic, coven sigil removal, Hunter being apprenticed to Dell and having a Blue Jay palisman, it had it all!
Honestly, the only complaint I have is with how The Collector was handled. He seemed a lot more menacing at the end of "For the Future" than was actually the case when "Watching and Dreaming" happened, and I'm not sure why he did the dream torment thing if he just wanted to play with Luz, Eda, and King and befriend them. The whole "Collector thinks that King and Eda are plotting to murder them" thing was never really addressed and kinda feels like it was ignored, maybe even retconned.
I also don't buy that Luz was able to get the Collector to listen to her that quickly and easily when King, who Collector had more of a connection with, was unable to do it over the course of months. Though Luz's "death", sacrificing herself to save the Collector, and that helping to show them what death is and how bad people going away for ever is, was well done... but the lesson of "you can't just fix people like broken toys when they break" was kinda undercut by Luz coming back as more of a badass than ever.
I'm glad that the Collector stayed friends with King, but the ending bit with the Collector was also the only really weak bit of the epilogue, with the kid just going off into the stars again in order to "grow up". That only really works if there's somewhere for them to go and more importantly, someONE for him to talk to up there. To our knowledge all the archivists are dead and we don't know of any other beings in the heavens, so it really just came off as "we don't know what to do with the Collector and don't want to just have them around all the time and potentially triggering the Boiling Isles' citizens PTSD".
A lot of these complaints were probably at least influenced by the runtime being less than the creators wanted though, and it was still phenomenal what they did with the time they had, a owrthy ending to a great show!
